Comparison Of Epidural And Intravenous Fentanyl Patient-Controlled Analgesia After Cesarean Section Under Epidural Anesthesia With Chloroprocaine, Kim M. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

This study compared two methods of postcesarean fentanyl patient- controlled analgesia (PCA). Fentanyl was administered intravenously (PCAI) or epidurally (PCAE) following cesarean section under epidural chloroprocaine anesthesia. Twenty-one ASA I and II parturients were randomly assigned to receive fentanyl PCAI (n = 9) or PCA (n = 12). At surgical completion fentanyl 1.0 mcg/kg was given and the PCA initiated with a dose of 30 mcg, a lockout interval of 10 minutes, a maximum dose of 180 mcg/hr, and no basal rate. Data were collected over 24 hours including visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, …

Contemporary Couple Enrichment: A Critical And Meta-Analytic Review Of Methodology, Terry L. Hight Jan 1997

Contemporary Couple Enrichment: A Critical And Meta-Analytic Review Of Methodology, Terry L. Hight

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of contemporary couple enrichment using currently-accepted standards of meta-analytic research. Twenty-seven published studies that compared enrichment groups to control groups were included in the analyses. The overall mean effect size (0.32), post-treatment effect size (0.35), and follow-up effect size (0.35) for couple enrichment were heterogeneous, positive, and significantly different than 0. Mean effect sizes for both post-treatment and follow-up did not differ significantly, Moderator variables associated with program type, measure type, nature of dependent variable, quality of methodology, measure reactivity, measure specificity, and researcher allegiance significantly improved homogeneity across effect …

Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah Jan 1997

Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have determined adenovirus mediated herpes simplex thymidine kinase gene transfer (AV-TK) to be effective for the treatment of experimental gliomas. In this study we report three distinct phenomenon. First, animals with complete regression of subcutaneous tumors upon intratumoral injections of AV-TK with concomitant Ganciclovir® (GCV) administration developed tumor immunity. These animals had the ability to reject a subsequent inoculum of lethal doses of tumor cells. This tumor immunity was long standing and protective as far as 6 months from the time of initial tumor ablation. Of interest, adoptive transfer of splenocytes from AV-TK treated-tumor ablated animals to naive …

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn Jan 1997

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine how much of the variance in birthweight can be explained by socio-economic status and utilization of prenatal care in Blacks and Whites. Rather than defining race in genetic terms, race was understood here as a social construction. The methodological approach was an analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle IV, 1988. The first, singleton, live birth for each interviewed woman was included, resulting in a sample of 911 women, of whom 313 were Black women and 598 White women.

Consistent with previous research, Black mothers were twice as likely to …

A Closer Look At Loss Of Chance Under Nebraska Medical Malpractice Law: Steineke V. Share Health Plan, Inc., 246 Neb. 374, 518 N.W.2d 904 (1994), Patrick L. Evatt

Nebraska Law Review

This Note first chronicles the development of loss of chance in medical malpractice litigation by focusing on the various approaches used by jurisdictions that recognize the cause of action. Second, this Note analyzes the Nebraska Supreme Court’s position on whether or not to recognize loss of chance either as a cause of action or as an element of damages. Finally, this Note examines the valuation of damages and analyzes the policy considerations for adopting loss of chance in a medical malpractice legal regime.

Defense Of Marriage Act: Isn’T It Ironic ... Don’T You Think? A Little Too Ironic?, Sherri L. Toussaint Jan 1997

Defense Of Marriage Act: Isn’T It Ironic ... Don’T You Think? A Little Too Ironic?, Sherri L. Toussaint

Nebraska Law Review

This Comment examines the efforts of gays and lesbians to obtain marital rights and the resistance these efforts have encountered. An examination of the law demonstrates that prohibitions on same-gender marriages are unconstitutional at both the federal and state level, particularly with regard to the principle of equal protection. Part II of this Comment begins with a discussion of the interests that marriage serves for the individual citizen and society in general. This Part makes clear that gay and lesbian couples are similarly situated to heterosexual couples with respect to marriage rights. Then, because most arguments against same-gender marriage focus …

The Personal Injury Exclusion: Congress Gets Physical But Leaves The Exclusion Emotionally Distressed, Patrick E. Hobbs Jan 1997

The Personal Injury Exclusion: Congress Gets Physical But Leaves The Exclusion Emotionally Distressed, Patrick E. Hobbs

Nebraska Law Review

Shortly after the income tax became a permanent part of the federal tax landscape in 1913, Congress added a provision to the Internal Revenue Code allowing taxpayers to exclude from income “any damages” received “on account of personal injury or sickness.” Since its enactment, § 104(a)(2) has been the subject of intense scrutiny and constant litigation. Part II of this article reviews the history of the personal injury exclusion. It finds that, at its inception, the exclusion actually constituted two separate exclusions: a statutory exclusion for physical injuries and a nonstatutory exclusion for nonphysical injuries. It examines the policy rationale …

The Jurisdiction Of Administrative Appeals In Nebraska: A One-Way Ticket, No Returns, No Transfers In Metro Renovation, Inc. V. Department Of Labor, 249 Neb. 337, 543 N.W.2d 715 (1996), Laura Cullison Jan 1997

The Jurisdiction Of Administrative Appeals In Nebraska: A One-Way Ticket, No Returns, No Transfers In Metro Renovation, Inc. V. Department Of Labor, 249 Neb. 337, 543 N.W.2d 715 (1996), Laura Cullison

Nebraska Law Review

A common issue when discussing jurisdiction in administrative law is whether an agency is acting within its “jurisdiction” or scope of authority. This Note does not deal with the jurisdiction of the administrative agency but rather jurisdiction for judicial review of administrative decisions. This Note first traces the history of the Metro Renovation, Inc. v. Department of Labor jurisdictional test and then will compare the Metro test with the Model Administrative Procedure Act and other states’ approaches to the jurisdiction of administrative appeals. Next, this Note will explain how the current test is unconstitutional and suggest some alternatives to the …

Leapfrogging Over Equal Protection Analysis: The Eighth Circuit Sanctions Separate And Unequal Prison Facilities For Males And Females In Klinger V. Department Of Corrections, 31 F.3d 727 (8th Cir. 1994), Angie Baker

Nebraska Law Review

This Note discusses the Eighth Circuit’s decision in Klinger v. Department of Corrections and will argue that its conclusion rested on a fundamental misapplication of the standards enunciated by the United States Supreme Court for the analysis of gender-based equal protection claims under the Fourteenth Amendment. Part II presents the background of the Klinger decision specifically and the position of incarcerated women generally. Parts III and IV discuss the scrutiny standard applicable to equal protection claims based on gender discrimination and conclude that the Eighth Circuit was wrong to dismiss the plaintiffs’ claims without applying the appropriate level of scrutiny. …

Teaching To Think, Felicity Haynes Jan 1997

Teaching To Think, Felicity Haynes

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Given that a devolved curriculum empowers a teacher to educate for change, and indeed encourages cross curricular critical and creative thinking, this article offers a broad review of three current strategies for helping anyone to think critically and creatively instruction in formal logic, training in focusing attention, and creating a community of inquiry. It concludes that the latter is the preferred mode of teaching thinking for understanding and responsibility, both in schools and in pre service teacher education, because it captures the best balance between student engagement, the presentation of external social standards and the need for ongoing reflection on …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz Jan 1997

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

As Hornstein observed in the beginning of the 1990s, the "enduring pattern" of instruction in social studies lessons is that which revolves around traditional "teacher centred and text-centred" teaching strategies (Hornstein, 1990). However, other research programs which have investigated the status of social studies (Cuban, 1991; Good and Harmon, 1987; Haladyna, Shaughnessy and Redsun, 1982a) have indicated that the core subject rates well with students when teaching strategies are interactive, inductive, and student centred. As Hutchens (1993) found, students became "hooked" on social studies when it involved cooperative learning, and student research strategies. In 1995, Moroz, Baker and McDonald, reported …
