Staff Training On Choice Availability And Its Effects On Adaptive And Maladaptive Behavior In Persons With Developmental Disabilities In The Group Home Setting, Tami Jo Mc Knight
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Recent research regarding persons with developmental disabilities has focused on the effects of choice availability on adaptive and maladaptive behavior. Because degree of choice within one's living environment is considered a key element of quality of life, it seems important to evaluate this variable and its relationship to adaptive and maladaptive behavior. In this preliminary study, direct-care staff members in a group-home setting were taught to increase choice opportunities in the areas of eating, leisure, and personal hygiene for residents with mild, moderate, or severe mental retardation. This investigation also examined the effects of increased choice availability on residents' adaptive …
The Vietnam War: A Comparison Of Interpretations, David Scott Morokoff
The Vietnam War: A Comparison Of Interpretations, David Scott Morokoff
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is based on a quantitative analysis of Time magazine's coverage of the Vietnam War. It demonstrates that Time held a pro-war bias in 1967, was neutral during 1968, and turned strongly against the war from 1969 through 1974. From mid-1969 on, some articles factually misrepresented what was happening in Vietnam in such a way as to promote the goals of the anti-war movement. If events admitted of both a pro-war and an anti-war interpretation Time published almost exclusively the anti-war view. By 1972, administration supporters had published a large body of verifiable evidence (summarized in chapter 3) demonstrating …

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa
When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is a discussion about new reproductive technologies and the ethical implications of those technologies. Until now, fetal personhood was the focus of pro-choice and pro-life groups battling about abortion versus women's rights. However, new reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation further complicate the foundation upon which traditional abortion arguments are based. The focus of the argument should be shifted from fetal personhood to a more comprehensive argument for the respect of the sanctity of human life. This shift would force society to address the more crucial issues which have led us to abortion and new …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons And Dicarboxylic Acids In Ambient Air, Ngoc Khanh Tran
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Atmospheric aromatic hydrocarbons and dicarboxylic acids were measured simultaneously in this work. A method was developed for aromatic hydrocarbons: collection on Tenax and charcoal, thermal desorption, and gas chromatographic analysis. Another method was verified for diacids: collection on quartz filter, conversion to dibutylesters, and analysis by capillary gas chromatography; Results of aromatic hydrocarbon measurements show a very strong linear relation among all aromatic hydrocarbons, and a significant correlation between aromatic hydrocarbons and CO measured at a nearby location. This result strongly suggests that aromatic hydrocarbons originate from automobiles. After correcting for dilution effects by normalizing hydrocarbon concentrations by CO concentration, …

A convenience sample of 283 nurses completed two assessment instruments, the Health-Promoting Life-Style Profile (HPLP-II) and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale. Significant differences were found in the mean scores on subscales of the HPLP-II and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale between nurses who smoke and those who do not. A posteriori comparisons of three groups of nurses; current smoking nurses, former smoking nurses and never …
Redox Polymers For Cyanide Ion Decomposition, Yu Zhang
Redox Polymers For Cyanide Ion Decomposition, Yu Zhang
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Insoluble, macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers bearing redox N-alkyl-N-chlorosulfonamide functional groups were used for removal of cyanide from aqueous solutions. These resins contain active chlorine and show oxidative properties. The use of these resins for oxidation of cyanide to less or nontoxic compounds was investigated in aqueous media containing different concentrations of cyanide and different pH values. Examples of the use of these resins as a polymer-supported reagent for oxidation of cyanide under static and dynamic conditions were given. Active chlorine readily oxidizes cyanide to cyanate. The decomposition of cyanate was also studied. The two decomposition methods investigated were oxidation with redox …

Children's Perspectives On Coping Strategies Used For Asthma, Terri A Dymeck
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Asthma is the most common chronic pulmonary disease among American children. There is limited research describing how children cope with asthma, and evidence suggests that many of these children demonstrate poor coping ability. This study, originally performed by Ryan-Wenger and Walsh (1994), describes the relationship between the frequency and effectiveness of coping strategies personally used by school-age children to manage asthma. Additional questions were incorporated to provide an objective measurement of coping and augment the original research; The Schoolagers' Coping Strategies Inventory (SCSI) and a demographic questionnaire were mailed to children with asthma and their parents. Data analysis {dollar}(N=65){dollar} demonstrated …
