A Study Of The Effects Of Consanguinity At The Genomic Level In Two Pakistani Bradaris, Sheena Sullivan Jan 1997

A Study Of The Effects Of Consanguinity At The Genomic Level In Two Pakistani Bradaris, Sheena Sullivan

Theses : Honours

The purpose of the project was to assess the effects of inbreeding on the genetic constitution of two Pakistani bradaris (literally defined as brotherhoods). Both bradaris contain children born to consanguineous (first cousin) and nonconsanguineous marriages. DNA samples have been supplied by Dr Subaib Ahmed of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Rawalpindi, for a total of 91 individuals. The specific allele frequencies, and levels of homozygosity of each bradari, were determined using twenty fluorescence-labelled microsatellite markers for chromosomes 13 and 15. Amplification of the DNA was performed using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were separated …

The Perception Of Effort During Muscular Fatigue And Recovery, Juan H. Svendsen Jan 1997

The Perception Of Effort During Muscular Fatigue And Recovery, Juan H. Svendsen

Theses : Honours

This study investigated how sense of effort is altered during fatigue in nine normal subjects. A contralateral limb matching paradigm was used in which the subjects nondominant (reference) arm was held at 20% MVC with force production matched at one minute intervals by the dominant (marching arm). It was found that matching force increased in a linear fashion with fatigue. It was also observed that EMG amplitude increased in the reference and matching arm and remained elevated during a 15 minute recovery period. As in previous studies strong correlation (r = 0.85) between rmsEMG in the reference arm and matching …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Motor Learning Contexts Within A Netball Season Of Sport Education, Kirsten Scott Jan 1997

A Descriptive Analysis Of Motor Learning Contexts Within A Netball Season Of Sport Education, Kirsten Scott

Theses : Honours

Time spent successfully engaged in motor skill activity has been found to have a high correlation with skill learning and achievement (Metzler, 1989). This study describes the different activities and key behaviours in which students are engaged and which ones provide opportunities to make motor skill responses. These key behaviours are described as they occur within a year eight netball class incorporating the sport education curriculum model. Selected students were observed in the natural setting to determine how their time was spent in a sport education unit. The method incorporated systematic observation, checklist recording and the use of interviews in …

Home Hospice Cancer Care: Family Members' Expectations, Perceptions And Satisfaction With Care, Kristina Medigovich Jan 1997

Home Hospice Cancer Care: Family Members' Expectations, Perceptions And Satisfaction With Care, Kristina Medigovich

Theses : Honours

Increasingly, there is greater expectation by the public, as health consumers, that they will receive care from health professionals which meets their expectations and does not leave them dissatisfied. The stress experienced by families caring for a family member with advanced cancer may be complicated when they are dissatisfied with care received from health care professionals. To further promote family satisfaction it is important therefore for health professionals to understand the theoretical underpinning of family satisfaction with care. One theoretical explanation of family member satisfaction with advanced cancer care in the palliative care setting, Porter's Discrepancy Theory, was investigated in …

The Em-Powter-Ing Of America: Using Info-Mercials To Teach Persuasion And Popular Discourse In The Basic Communication Course, Daniel W. Heaton Jan 1997

The Em-Powter-Ing Of America: Using Info-Mercials To Teach Persuasion And Popular Discourse In The Basic Communication Course, Daniel W. Heaton

Basic Communication Course Annual

This article describes how a critique of Susan Powter's "Stop the Insanity!" info-mercial provides educators with an effective, class-tested, and fun assignment to be included in the persuasion section of a basic communication course. This assignment provides students with an excellent example of a message from popular discourse that follows Monroe's Motivated Sequence. It also facilitates discussion of several key issues related to persuasion in general. Additionally, because this activity uses a popular discourse text, students enhance their critical thinking skills and become more critical consumers of messages they receive through popular discourse.

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker Jan 1997

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker

School of Psychology Theses

Delusions are considered to be one of the primary symptoms of psychosis but until recently have received little empirical investigation. One approach has been to examine the extent to which deluded individuals demonstrate cognitive biases which are different from those of normal controls in inductive reasoning tasks. In this study two hypothesis testing tasks were used to investigate cognitive biases in a group of people with persecutory delusions compared to a group whose delusions had remitted and a normal control group. Participants completed two tasks consisting of a series of visual discrimination problems in which they had to choose between …

Reflections On Voices, Lynn Mcclelland Jan 1997

Reflections On Voices, Lynn Mcclelland

School of Psychology Theses

Voice hearing (auditory hallucinations) is associated with multiple problems : disturbed behaviour, anxiety, depression, social stigma, and suicide ( Siris 1991 , Barnes et al. 1989, Caldwell & Gottesman 1990). Traditionally voices are seen as a symptom of schizophrenia , psychosis, and mental illness, even though recent estimates of prevalence are 2-4% of the population (Siris 1990, Tien et al. 1993). This view has been challenged by research that has shown that there are many different experiences of voices, positive and negative, and that they are not confined to particular diagnoses or clinical populations (Romme & Escher 1989, Bentall 1990). …

Is Toilet Training As Easy As A B C?, John Doran Jan 1997

Is Toilet Training As Easy As A B C?, John Doran

School of Psychology Theses

Toilet training is often viewed as a fairly straightforward process. This may be why much of the prescriptive literature available today has not been subject empirical investigation. This study followed twenty-six children through toilet training to investigate five factors that are assumed to be associated with a successful outcome to training - child readiness, parental readiness, behavioural style of parents, child temperament and the type of approach parent's use to train their child. Three of these five factors - behavioural style of parent's, child temperament and the approach parent's use to train their child - were found to be associated …

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker Jan 1997

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker

School of Psychology Theses

Recent studies (e.g. Kuyken & Brewin, 1994a) have noted the presence of high levels of disturbing intrusive memories in depressed women. Intrusive memories are best known as a post-traumatic symptom and have received considerable attention from researchers in this field. The presence of a post-traumatic symptom in depression indicates that trauma models might be useful in refining our understanding and treatment of depression. Predictions based on theories of post-traumatic processing were tested in relation to the intrusive memories of a sample of 26 depressed women. The women showed a pattern of intrusive memory experiences which indicate that their memories are …

The Medical Malpractice Crisis In Obstetrics: A Gestalt Approach To Reform, Elizabeth Swire Falker Jan 1997

The Medical Malpractice Crisis In Obstetrics: A Gestalt Approach To Reform, Elizabeth Swire Falker

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The medical malpractice crisis in obstetrics has led to a decline in practicing obstetricians, particularly in high-risk and rural areas, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged women. This crisis is driven by high malpractice insurance premiums, defensive medicine practices, and poor physician-patient communication. The article proposes reforms, including the integration of certified nurse-midwives, improved communication strategies, and alternative compensation systems, to reduce litigation, stabilize insurance markets, and improve access to care.

Examining The Problem Of Power In Divorce Mediation: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Shelley Lynne Hermer Jan 1997

Examining The Problem Of Power In Divorce Mediation: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Shelley Lynne Hermer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

How problematic is power imbalance in divorce mediation? Research in the last fifteen years has drawn attention to this issue, resulting in criticisms levelled at mediation from women’s groups, lawyers and others. Using six in-depth interviews with Ontario divorce mediators, this study examined power imbalance and its management. Three main themes emerged from the findings related to power: (1) the ‘emotional readiness’ of the couple, (2) the effects of the legal system, in particular, the relationships with lawyers, and, (3) physical intimidation and financial intimidation. Techniques employed by the mediators were similar across the interviews. These findings led to a …
