Postretirement Benefits Other Than Pensions: The Effects On A Company's Financial Statements And Postretirement Benefit Policies, Jonathan K. Goodin Jan 1997

Postretirement Benefits Other Than Pensions: The Effects On A Company's Financial Statements And Postretirement Benefit Policies, Jonathan K. Goodin

Honors Capstones

Prior to 1990, health care costs were escalating at an annual rate of up to 22%. Due to this increase, the FASB was not satisfied with how businesses were reporting their postretirement expenses and drafted SFAS 106, "Employers' Accounting for Postretirement Benefits Other Than Pensions." SFAS 106 required employers to record postretirement expenses under the accrual method, not the cash basis method that the majority of companies were recording. The impact on corporations was immense, with an increase in industry costs estimated from $400 billion to $1 trillion. This paper defines what postretirement expenses are, examines current reporting requirements, analyzes …

Designing Meaningful Projects That Meet Community Needs, Johnny Irizarry

Special Topics, General

Taller Puertorriquefio is a community-based cultural center, located in a North Philadelphia neighborhood rich in history. Poverty has taken hold of the area as the collapse and flight of industry and work opportunities has occurred. With so many needs in our area. Taller has to make careful program choices. This is not easy when the needs are so great. In our 22-year history, our mission has been for the arts and culture to be at the core of what we do. Our guiding question in assessing community needs is "How can Taller best influence the overall well-being of the community …

A Study Of The Effects Of A Service-Learning Experience On Student Success At An Urban Community College, Judith Sheryl Berson Jan 1997

A Study Of The Effects Of A Service-Learning Experience On Student Success At An Urban Community College, Judith Sheryl Berson

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a service-learning experience on student success as measured by class attendance course completion, final course grades, and end-of-term evaluation data.

Though many outcomes of service-learning experiences have been studied. including ethical values, self-esteem, student personal development, and career preparation, relatively few studies have been conducted on the effects of such experiences on academic achievement, and the studies that have been done have primarily studied students at traditional, four-year, residential universities.

Project Summaries

We are delighted that you have agreed to participate in this exciting opportunity for TVI faculty and students to become involved in Service-Learning!

Campus Compact, for example is a consortium of over 500 college presidents who have mandated integrating service programs into their institutions. Simultaneously, the American Association of Community Colleges has recently awarded 15 grants to community colleges to create Learn and Serve Program, to develop …

The Healing Community, Lin Griffith

Project Summaries

The healing community, a group of 32 students and their 4 instructors, will be sharing a special experience together for spring, ’97. The students will take four courses together. Anatomy and physiology, Algebra, English or ESL, and Volunteerism. The instructors—Joe Beeman, Carol Paxton, Lin Griffith, and Deborah Dentler—have adapted the courses to emphasize the connections between them: algebra problems will have nursing applications and term papers for the writing course will be on health-related topics. For the Volunteerism course, students will be placed in hospitals or clinics and will discuss their service experiences in class and in reflection journals.
