The Millon Index of Personality Styles (MIPS) was administered to a sample of 72 female and 86 male freshmen, engineering students at a private midwestern engineering institution. The MIPS college normative sample of 1,600 college students was used as a comparison group. A total of 24 personality characteristics were assessed in the domains of motivation aims, …

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski Jan 1997

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral and mental health approaches to consultation differ in theoretical foundation, interpersonal interaction style of the consultant, and identified source of problem assessment, interventions, and decision-making. These consultation approaches may yield different levels of consultation effectiveness. Studies conducted to date have not consistently found differences between these approaches in terms of consultation effectiveness. However, there have been methodological flaws in these studies. In order to determine if either approach yields better outcomes, a means of assessing consultation orientation (i.e., the theoretical approach endorsed by a psychologist) must be developed. The School-based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale (SCORS) was designed to measure …

Rhodococcus Equi And Arcanobacterium Haemolyticum: Two "Coryneform" Bacteria Increasingly Recognized As Agents Of Human Infection, R. Linder Jan 1997

Rhodococcus Equi And Arcanobacterium Haemolyticum: Two "Coryneform" Bacteria Increasingly Recognized As Agents Of Human Infection, R. Linder

Publications and Research

Rhodococcus equi and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, formerly classified in the genus Corynebacterium, are members of the loosely defined taxon "coryneform" bacteria. Although they are the etiologic agents of distinct human infections, both organisms are frequently overlooked, which results in missed or delayed diagnoses. R. equi, long known as an important pathogen of immature horses, has become in the past three decades an opportunistic pathogen of severely immunosuppressed humans. Most cases are secondary to HIV infection. When specifically sought in throat swab cultures, A. haemolyticum is found responsible for 0.5% to 2.5% of bacterial pharyngitis, especially among adolescents. These two microorganisms represent …

The Impact Of A Substance Abuse Prevention Program: An Evaluation, Julie Ann Hogan Jan 1997

The Impact Of A Substance Abuse Prevention Program: An Evaluation, Julie Ann Hogan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study tests the theory of risk and protective factors. The risk and protective theory suggests that substance abuse prevention programs, in order to be effective, must decrease risk factors and increase protective factors for youth. Seventeen risk and protective factors are identified in the literature and are tested in this study; To determine the degree to which this theory applies to prevention programming, this study evaluates the effectiveness of a substance abuse prevention program entitled the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). NYSP is a nationally sponsored summer youth and academic program that includes a prevention education component. Three hundred …

Testing The Naked Eye Observation Of The Cervix After Application Of Acetic Acid As An Effective Screening Test For Cervical Dysplasia, Carol M Schmidt Jan 1997

Testing The Naked Eye Observation Of The Cervix After Application Of Acetic Acid As An Effective Screening Test For Cervical Dysplasia, Carol M Schmidt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Papanicolaou test is the recommended screening for cervical cancer. It has a high false-negative rate. Because of the imperfection of the Papanicolaou other screening tests have been developed. Five studies compared various aspects of different screening techniques with mixed results; A quasi-experimental design study was constructed comparing the naked eye observation of the cervix to the colposcopy observation, and the naked eye observation of the cervix to the Papanicolaou test; The sample of 136 women from the Las Vegas area, being seen at their regular clinics were examined with all three procedures. A physiologic framework directed this study. The …

Crime And Its Relationship To The University Medical Center, Paul D Shapiro Jan 1997

Crime And Its Relationship To The University Medical Center, Paul D Shapiro

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the relationship between crime and violence and the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. An investigation was conducted to determine how crime and violence affects the medical center from an economic, security, staff and organizational response perspective; Nursing staff and security officer interviews, supplemented with security department incident reports, suggest a perception problem exists. Nurses interviewed believe a major cost of crime and violence at the medical center is the perceived threat to their personal safety by gang members and patients under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Security officer interviews and data from incident reports suggest …

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Jan 1997

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Insertion mutations in two Vibrio cholerae genes, cya and crp, which encode adenylate cyclase and the cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein (CRP), respectively, derepressed the expression of a chromosomal cholera toxin (CT) promoter-lacZ fusion at the nonpermissive temperature of 37 degrees C. In the classical biotype strain O395, the crp mutation increased the production of both CT and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) in vitro under a variety of growth conditions not normally permissive for their expression. The most dramatic increase in CT and TCP was observed with the crp mutant in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium pH 8.5, at 30 degrees C. El …

Analysis Of Mutant Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptors Expressed In Pc12 Cells Identifies Signals Governing Sodium Channel Induction During Neuronal Differentiation., Gary R. Fanger, Richard R. Vaillancourt, Lynn E. Heasley, Jean-Pierre P. Montmayeur, Gary L. Johnson, Robert A. Maue

Dartmouth Scholarship

The mechanisms governing neuronal differentiation, including the signals underlying the induction of voltage-dependent sodium (Na+) channel expression by neurotrophic factors, which occurs independent of Ras activity, are not well understood. Therefore, Na+ channel induction was analyzed in sublines of PC12 cells stably expressing platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) beta receptors with mutations that eliminate activation of specific signalling molecules. Mutations eliminating activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), phospholipase C gamma (PLC gamma), the GTPase-activating protein (GAP), and Syp phosphatase failed to diminish the induction of type II Na+ channel alpha-subunit mRNA and functional Na+ channel expression by PDGF, as determined by RNase …

Can You Keep A Secret--You May Discover The Answer Is Yes Under Missouri's Privilege For Trade Secrets, Brian R. Mcginley

Missouri Law Review

This Note examines which factors give rise to classification of information, patterns, formulas and the like as "trade secrets." Missouri's legislature, in its Uniform Trade Secrets Act, has offered a noncomprehensive definition of "trade secret."' While this and other proffered definitions provide some guidance, attempting to define any term of art cannot be done in absolute measures.

Porin Proteins Of Salmonella Typhimurium Mediate Adherence To Macrophages, Robert Solomon Negm Jan 1997

Porin Proteins Of Salmonella Typhimurium Mediate Adherence To Macrophages, Robert Solomon Negm

Doctoral Dissertations

Salmonellosis continues to be a major infectious disease in both the United States and elsewhere. The outer membrane porin proteins (Omp) from Salmonella typhimurium play a key role in the initial adherence of this microorganism to murine macrophages and this mechanism is a critical event in the pathogenesis of infections. In this study macrophages were found to make contact with an OmpC-like protein of S. typhimurium and inhibition assays using the purified protein significantly reduced bacterial binding to macrophage. The ompC gene in a strain of S. typhimurium that is resistant to killing by macrophage was inactivated by transposon mutagenesis. …

Doing Justice: A Challenge For Catholic Law Schools Essay., Grace M. Walle Jan 1997

Doing Justice: A Challenge For Catholic Law Schools Essay., Grace M. Walle

St. Mary's Law Journal

The numerous allegations of misconduct against high-ranking United States political figures and the associated attorneys are disheartening, but even more disconcerting is the general public’s acquiescence to these ethical deviations. The common assumption that “all lawyers are crooks” fails to outrage anyone. The fact most, if not all, recent ethical violators attended law schools and began their political careers as lawyers prompts questions of the legal education process. Understanding what justice encompasses may begin in books and the classroom, but justice in legal practice requires far more. The aspiration of “doing justice” may stem from religious belief, but this goal …

Defining The Limits Of Federal Court Jurisdiction Over States In Bankruptcy Court., Patricia L. Barsalou Jan 1997

Defining The Limits Of Federal Court Jurisdiction Over States In Bankruptcy Court., Patricia L. Barsalou

St. Mary's Law Journal

Sovereign immunity jurisprudence has always been a confusing jumble of assumptions which seem incomprehensible. Despite the confusion, understanding sovereign immunity has become more important in the wake of the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Seminole Tribe of Florida v. Florida. The constitutional issues raised in Seminole Tribe amount to a reinterpretation of the fundamental balance of power between federal and state governments and the power of Congress to affect that balance. Not all sovereign immunity is sovereign immunity. Many courts use the term to identify both the common-law doctrine and the “immunity” granted to the states through the Eleventh …

The Food And Drug Administration's Final Rule On Tobacco Advertising Is All Butt Final: Commercial Speech Doctrine Will Be Tested Once More Under A Stricter Central Hudson Analysis In The Aftermath Of 44 Liquormart, Inc. V. Rhode Island Comment., Joe R. Hinojosa Jan 1997

Hinojosa

St. Mary's Law Journal

In 1996 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) promulgated regulations affecting the advertising, sale, and promotion of tobacco. President Clinton supported the FDA’s claim it has the power to regulate tobacco products not as drugs, but as medical delivery devices of nicotine. Meaning tobacco sellers, retailer, distributors, and manufacturers would be subject to strict rules concerning how and where tobacco products may be advertised, distributed, and promoted. Despite the FDA’s claims, these measures were oriented toward discouraging children from smoking. Opponents of the regulations claim the restrictions constitute blatant infringement of commercial speech. The FDA argues that while advertising is …

The Moral Atmosphere Of The Elementary School And The Question Of Gender., Suzanne Beauclair Roy Jan 1997

The Moral Atmosphere Of The Elementary School And The Question Of Gender., Suzanne Beauclair Roy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the moral atmosphere of the elementary school and ask: How does the elementary school principal contribute to the moral atmosphere of the elementary school? In addition to this question, this study also explored the likenesses and differences between male principals and female principals in regard to the degree to which the principal practiced either an "ethic of care" or an "ethic of justice." Four case studies were constructed using data collected from observations and interviews that were conducted in four elementary schools. Also, two female principals and two male principals were …

The Link Between Economic Restructuring, Economic Deprivation, And Serious Crime In American Cities, 1970-1990., Graham Christopher Ousey Jan 1997

The Link Between Economic Restructuring, Economic Deprivation, And Serious Crime In American Cities, 1970-1990., Graham Christopher Ousey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation postulates that the economic transition from manufacturing to service employment is a major factor leading to high rates of economic deprivation and crime in major U.S. cities. By integrating theory and research from several substantive areas of sociology, I extend macro-level research in criminology and develop a social organization/social control explanation of city crime rates. I use both cross-sectional and longitudinal regression methods to investigate the direct and indirect effects of a city's industrial structure on race-disaggregated rates of homicide, robbery, and burglary. Based upon data from 113 major cities in the United States, I compute a series …

Everyday Problem-Solving Goals: Contributions Of Age And Individual Differences., Lisa Eileen Norris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present research was to examine the contribution of age and individual differences to everyday problem solving, focusing on goal preference. Three pilot studies were conducted to generate interpersonal problem solving goals that were high in emotional arousal and low in emotional arousal. In the Experiment Proper, 40 young and 40 older adults were given 6 vignettes depicting everyday problems. Subjects rated their preference of both high and low experimenter-provided goals. Subjects then completed 4 individual difference questionnaires that measured stimulation intensity, affect intensity, and emotional control. Results showed that both younger and older adults endorsed more …

This qualitative case study explored the implementation of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in an ESL program serving adult refugees and immigrants from Vietnam. The case consisted of two sub-cases: implementation of CALL in the beginners' class and implementation of CALL in the advanced beginners' class. The investigation, which lasted 46 weeks, was intense and holistic. The researcher was also the administrator of the refugee program. The research methodology used was largely qualitative in design, so that an emic understanding of how the innovation impacted the actors and brought about change in the learning environment could be constructed. Quantitative research methods …

Predictors Of Nonadherence Among Hiv-Infected Outpatients: Psychosocial And Medical Care Factors Associated With Appointment Attendance., Sheryl L. Catz Jan 1997

Predictors Of Nonadherence Among Hiv-Infected Outpatients: Psychosocial And Medical Care Factors Associated With Appointment Attendance., Sheryl L. Catz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nonadherence to medical regimens is a critical behavioral threat to the health of HIV-infected individuals. Patients cannot benefit from increasingly efficacious treatments for HIV/AIDs unless they adhere to them. Consistent medical care plays a central role in prolonging life and enhancing quality of life for these individuals. It is therefore essential to understand why many patients do not return reliably for medical services. However, little research has focused on the development of empirically based models of HIV-related nonadherence. Thus, the primary purpose of the present study was to identify factors predictive of HIV-related nonadherence to medical appointments. Demographic, medical care, …

The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings Jan 1997

The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Increased interest in how violence exposure might relate to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other adolescent psychopathology has created considerable demand for an assessment tool to assist in this research effort. Though attempts have been made to improve the measurement standards for violence research on youth, available instruments lack adequate psychometric qualities, comprehensiveness, or an acceptable format for slow readers. The present study provided empirical evidence on the utility of the Screen for Adolescent Violence Exposure (SAVE), an instrument designed to both correct the deficiencies of previous measures and to assess violence exposure for school, home, and neighborhood settings. The …

Experimental Analysis Of Aggression., Bethany Ann Marcus Jan 1997

Experimental Analysis Of Aggression., Bethany Ann Marcus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1982, Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman, and Richman developed a systematic assessment method to identify the operant functions of self-injurious behavior. In this study, the Iwata et al., method was used to assess the operant functions of aggression displayed by children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. Although researchers have demonstrated that aggression serves operant functions, there has been no comprehensive analysis of aggression using the Iwata et al. method. Twelve children and adolescents participated. The experimental conditions from the Iwata et al. method were replicated (i.e., attention, instructional demand, play, no interaction); also, a tangible positive reinforcement condition was included …

An Integrated Gps-Gis Methodology For Performing Travel Time Studies., Cesar A. Quiroga Jan 1997

An Integrated Gps-Gis Methodology For Performing Travel Time Studies., Cesar A. Quiroga

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes a methodology for conducting travel time studies based on global positioning system (GPS) receivers and geographic information system (GIS) technology. Compared to traditional approaches, the new methodology provides consistency, automation, finer levels of resolution, and better accuracy in measuring travel time and speed. These characteristics enable the detection of localized traffic effects much more efficiently than with traditional techniques. The new methodology automates the data collection and data reduction procedures, and provides improved procedures for documenting and analyzing travel time and speed data. As a result, large amounts of reliable travel time and speed data can be …
