Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler Jan 1997

Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Physical contacts between cells are known to influence a broad range of biological activities. Investigations into the regulation of prolactin gene expression have shown that cell behavior within the pituitary may also be affected by adhesive contacts. To better understand the mechanisms that regulate cell-cell adhesive contacts in these endocrine cells, we developed a procedure that quantitatively assays homotypic aggregation in the rat pituitary tumor cell line, 235-1. We observed that treatment of 235-1 cells with dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, not only reduces prolactin production but also decreases the reformation of cell-cell contacts. In two independent experiments, control cells …

Preliminary Exploration Of Risk Assessment Predictors : Can Probationers Who Re-Offend Be Identified?, Deborah Dawson Jan 1997

Preliminary Exploration Of Risk Assessment Predictors : Can Probationers Who Re-Offend Be Identified?, Deborah Dawson

Theses : Honours

A retrospective study of 243 male probationers who had been on community based orders in Western Australia for a mean time of 15 months, was undertaken to explore differences between re-offenders and non re-offenders. Discriminant function analyses were employed in a series of designs where the mediating effects of geographic location and Aboriginality and non Aboriginality were investigated. The analyses revealed that the best static predictor item for distinguishing between non re-offenders and re-offenders in the entire sample was offence type (Wilks Lambda, .88, chi-square 25.589, df = 6, p < .0005) and the best criminogenic need item was employment (Wilks Lambda, .96, chi-square 7.566, df = 2, p < .05). In regional areas, drug use was !he primary predictor contributing to a function which significantly discriminated between and re-offenders and non re-offenders (Wilks Lambda, .78, chi-square 12.557, df = 4, p < .05). The classification accuracy was 68% for grouped cases. This result was unexpected, as previous studies have consistently found static predictors to be primary predictors of risk. Analysis of the metropolitan area sub-sample produced results more consistent with previous findings. Offence type and number of breached orders loaded highly on a statistically significant function which satisfactorily discriminated between outcomes (Wilks Lambda, .81, chi-square 31.226, df= 6, p < .0005). The analysis of race produced similar results. The variables which had tile highest loadings on the derived functions for both sub-samples were al11 static predictors of risk. Based on meta-analytic research outcomes of Andrews et al. (1990), it was also hypothesised that a chi-square analysis of court sanctioned probation conditions would reveal differences across re-offending outcome and the nature of the probation conditions. The results were consistent with the finding that general correctional service combined with a judicial alternative produced greater reductions in recidivism than a judicial alternative alone. The outcomes related to geographic location and race reinforced the importance of assessing risk of recidivism on the basis of population-specific attributes. Despite several limitations associated with the research design, the exploration provided future directions for the development of risk models and the use of judicial alternatives to reduce recidivism.

A Descriptive Analysis Of Magisterial Remand Custody Orders For Offenders Who Receive A Non-Custodial Sentence Outcome, Maeve B. Barry Jan 1997

A Descriptive Analysis Of Magisterial Remand Custody Orders For Offenders Who Receive A Non-Custodial Sentence Outcome, Maeve B. Barry

Theses : Honours

When an offender receives a non-custodial sentence following remand custody then concerns must be raised that the pre-trial remand imprisonment was unnecessary and improper, with judicial, economic and humanitarian consequences that run counter to the philosophical and legislative expectations of a democratic justice system. This study analysed the use of remand custody orders over a six month charge period, by magistrates in Western Australia, to determine what proportion of offenders spent time in remand custody prior to receiving a noncustodial sentence. The results indicate that magistrates use the remand custody facility as a "short, sharp shock" to deter future offending, …

The Predictive Accuracy Of The Violent Offender Treatment Program Risk Assessment Scale, Ann Ward Jan 1997

The Predictive Accuracy Of The Violent Offender Treatment Program Risk Assessment Scale, Ann Ward

Theses : Honours

Current methods for screening violent offenders for program eligibility are expensive and time consuming. Developers of the Violent Offender Treatment Program (VOTP) have designed 2 brief and economical instrument to screen offenders for program eligibility. The present study was undertaken to assess the reliability and predictive accuracy of the VOTP Risk Assessment Scale (RAS). An inter-rater reliability of 20 court histories attained a mean kappa of .8 I. The RAS was applied to court histories of 202 violent offenders released between 1985 and 1987. A I 0-year follow-up of convictions for violent behaviour yielded a 47~ base rate. Receiver Operating …

Having The Whip-Hand In Middlemarch, Daniel Karlin Jan 1997

Having The Whip-Hand In Middlemarch, Daniel Karlin

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In one of the first reviews of Proust's Du cote de chez Swann, appropriately published in the journal Le Temps, in 1913, the critic Paul Souday takes Proust to task for writing too much like an Englishman. 'His copious narratives have something of Ruskin and Dickens in them,' Souday remarks; and he might easily have added George Eliot, whom we know Proust to have read and admired. Souday goes on:

This superabundance of trivial events, this insistence on suggesting explanations of them, is frequently met with in English novels, where the sense of life is produced by a kind of …

The Twenty-Fifth George Eliot Memorial Lecture: The Larger Meaning Of Your Voice: Varieties Of Speech In George Eliot, Raymond Chapman

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

When Ladislaw has watched and listened to Dorothea in the Vatican Museum, he says to the painter Naumann that language is superior to painting and 'gives a fuller image, which is all the better for being vague.[ ... ] This woman whom you have just seen, for example: how would you paint her voice, pray? But her voice is much diviner than anything you have seen of her.' The novelist does in a way paint the voice, using the visual signs of written language to convey an auditory experience.

Written dialogue may be naturalistic and idiomatic in its choice of …

Annual Report 1997, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

1997 was, as always, a busy year for the Fellowship, beginning with the Annual General Meeting on 14 March. Mrs. Kathleen Porter retired from the Fellowship Council and was thanked for many supportive years. The Chairman had just completed twenty-five years in office and was presented with a gift token to show the Fellowship's appreciation for all those years in office. Mr. David Adams was elected to take the place of Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Vivienne Wood of King Edward Sixth Form College, Nuneaton was co-opted for one year. A George Eliot version of 'Call my Bluff' concluded the meeting. …

Black Soldiers At Fort Hays, Kansas, 1867-1869 A Study In Civilian And Military Violence, James N. Leiker Jan 1997

Black Soldiers At Fort Hays, Kansas, 1867-1869 A Study In Civilian And Military Violence, James N. Leiker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Historians of the western army contend with many romanticized myths. Few of those myths, in recent years, have held the popular consciousness as has that of the army's first black regulars, known as "buffalo soldiers." By now, the origins of the segregated regiments are quite familiar. In 1866, with the nation's acting military force having dwindled to a fraction of its Civil War size, the Republican Congress encouraged the enlistment of newly freed slaves and northern free blacks. Assigned to remote western areas, black units played an instrumental role over the next few decades in opening the West for white …

Providing Pensions For U.K. Employees With Varied Working Lives, Deborah R. Cooper Jan 1997

Providing Pensions For U.K. Employees With Varied Working Lives, Deborah R. Cooper

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Several different working lives are investigated, including employees with breaks in employment, part-time employment, and temporary employment. The pensions that could be provided to the different employees by final salary, revalued career average, or money purchase pension schemes (plans) are calculated and compared. Some of the weaknesses in a final salary pension scheme (the treatment of deferred pensioners and cross subsidies between different groups of member) are considered. Possible alternative benefit structures are considered to address the problems.

Fuzzy Underwriting: An Application Of Fuzzy Logic To Medical Underwriting, Per-Johan Horgby, Ralf Lohse, Nicola-Alexander Sittaro Jan 1997

Fuzzy Underwriting: An Application Of Fuzzy Logic To Medical Underwriting, Per-Johan Horgby, Ralf Lohse, Nicola-Alexander Sittaro

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

One of the most difficult issues in the medical underwriting of life insurance applicants is diabetes mellitus. Compiling the prognosticating parameters for diabetic applicants results in a complex system of mutually interacting factors. In addition, neither the prognosticating factors themselves nor their impact on the mortality risk is clear cut. We show how a fuzzy inference system can be used in underwriting diabetes mellitus. A fuzzy inference system can cope with the imprecise nature of medical parameters by converting them into fuzzy sets and aggregating them using mathematical techniques. The fuzzy underwriting system presented goes further than previous applications of …

Who's Afraid Of Humpty Dumpty: Deconstructionist References In Judicial Opinions, Madeleine Plasencia Jan 1997

Who's Afraid Of Humpty Dumpty: Deconstructionist References In Judicial Opinions, Madeleine Plasencia

Seattle University Law Review

The question of why judges are concerned with justifying or defending their decisions from the followers of Derrida?, is posed in this Article both generally, as a matter of legal interpretation, and specifically, within the context of the issue(s) presented in the examined cases. By examining the concerns articulated by the judges in these cases and then referring back to the writings of Derrida, this Article describes the likely outcome if Derrida's views of (legal) interpretation are in fact applied in judicial opinion-making. In Parts II and III, this Article introduces the reader to important concepts in Derridean deconstruction. These …

Assisted Suicide: The State Versus The People, John P. Safranek, Stephen J. Safranek Jan 1997

Assisted Suicide: The State Versus The People, John P. Safranek, Stephen J. Safranek

Seattle University Law Review

This Article will examine the Ninth Circuit's appeal to personal dignity and autonomy to justify a constitutional right of assisted suicide in the face of pluralist opposition, that is, a law duly enacted by a majority of elected representatives in a state or by the people directly. Scrutiny of the Ninth Circuit's decision will reveal the formidable jurisprudential obstacles to basing a right to assisted suicide on dignity and autonomy, obstacles the Supreme Court refused to overcome in revoking Compassion in Dying. This examination is divided into three parts: the first analyzes attempts to justify rights on the principle …

Genetic Privacy In Washington State: Policy Considerations And A Model Genetic Privacy Act, Karen Ann Jensen Jan 1997

Genetic Privacy In Washington State: Policy Considerations And A Model Genetic Privacy Act, Karen Ann Jensen

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment presents background information concerning genetic information and genetic testing. Section III then argues that privacy and autonomy are significant policy issues in connection with genetic information. As a result, the decision to have genetic testing performed should be an individual's choice, and genetic testing should never be compelled. Section IV argues that the failure to give genetic information special protection in the law has potentially harmful consequences. Section V surveys current efforts to protect genetic privacy, both by the federal government and states other than Washington. Section V also analyzes the current state of medical records privacy protection …

Institutional Missions, Multiple Faculty Roles: Implications For Faculty Development, Ann E. Austin, Joseph J. Brocato, Jonathan D. Rohrer Jan 1997

Institutional Missions, Multiple Faculty Roles: Implications For Faculty Development, Ann E. Austin, Joseph J. Brocato, Jonathan D. Rohrer

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The authors review the context in which the topic of faculty roles is gaining attention, draw on data from a qualitative study of how faculty construct their roles, and argue that faculty developers and other institutional leaders should consider expanding the scope of faculty development activities in ways that support faculty across the full breadth of their roles. The article concludes by suggesting that faculty developers ask questions about faculty roles in the institutional context and "map" faculty development opportunities to ensure that multiple roles are supported.

Small Group Techniques: Selecting And Developing Activities Based On Stages Of Group Development, Sandra A. Harris, Kathryn J. Watson Jan 1997

Small Group Techniques: Selecting And Developing Activities Based On Stages Of Group Development, Sandra A. Harris, Kathryn J. Watson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Research shows that active and cooperative learning activities can be effective teaching methods; however, developing and carrying out these practices is often challenging, perhaps even confusing and frustrating, to educators who have not been trained in group processes. This article reviews basic principles for using group techniques in college classrooms, describes the developmental stages of groups, and provides examples of activities and assignments as well as processes for reflection and evaluation.

"A Continuing Conversation On Teaching:" An Evaluation Of A Decade-Long Lilly Teaching Fellows Program 1986-1996, Karen List

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This study assesses what difference the Lilly Teaching Fellows Program at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst has made in its first ten years, both to the fellows who have participated in it and to the University community. Based on a survey of the fellows, the study concludes that the program has had significant positive effects on teaching skills and attitudes, collegiality, research and service. The study also assesses the seven major components of the Lilly Program and suggests ways in which they might be improved The author then recommends increased institutional support for teaching to decrease the tensions between the programs' …
