Working On The "Mommy-Track": Motherhood And Women Lawyers, Rebecca Korzec Jan 1997

Working On The "Mommy-Track": Motherhood And Women Lawyers, Rebecca Korzec

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the effects of motherhood on the careers of women lawyers and the efficacy of the 'mommy-track' as a means of ameliorating these effects. Part I examines the current position of women in the legal profession. Part II examines the nature of 'motherhood' and the risk/benefit function of 'mommy-tracking.' Part III analyzes the 'mommy-track' from the perspective of feminist jurisprudence. Finally, Part IV examines issues related to workplace transformation. It is the position of this paper that 'mommy-tracking' reinforces undesirable stereotypes. Ironically, this apparent 'solution' actually forestalls the transformations, at home and at work, which could enable women …

Isolation Or Interdependence? The Impact Of Central City And Metropolitan Statistical Area Economic Growth On The Welfare In Poor, Inner-City Census Tracts, Amy C. Novak Jan 1997

Isolation Or Interdependence? The Impact Of Central City And Metropolitan Statistical Area Economic Growth On The Welfare In Poor, Inner-City Census Tracts, Amy C. Novak

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper critically analyzes the relationship between the central city low income census tract and the economic vitality of the central city and the metropolitan statistical area. It attempts to provide an understanding of the impact of central city and metropolitan statistical area (MSA) economic activity on inner-city, poor census tracts. This study began by examining ninety-six low income census tracts in twenty-four of the fifty largest US cities. The variables examined included income levels, employment, and social variables (educational attainment, female-headed households, type of employment, percent of persons in poverty, percent of persons receiving federal public assistance dollars) in …

Reasonable Accommodations And Awkward Compromises: Issues Concerning Learning Disabled Students And Professional Schools In The Law School Context, Lisa A. Eichhorn Jan 1997

Reasonable Accommodations And Awkward Compromises: Issues Concerning Learning Disabled Students And Professional Schools In The Law School Context, Lisa A. Eichhorn

Faculty Publications

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, colleges and universities are prohibited from discriminating against qualified students with learning disabilities and must reasonably accommodate such disabilities so that students have a genuine opportunity to complete academic programs successfully. Not surprisingly, just like their non-disabled peers, a number of learning disabled college graduates are choosing to enter professions such as law and medicine. Their entry into professional schools has raised a number of legal issues concerning their qualification to matriculate, their need for accommodations, and their eventual ability to practice successfully. …

Foundation-Building For Western Hemispheric Integration, Frederick M. Abbott Jan 1997

Foundation-Building For Western Hemispheric Integration, Frederick M. Abbott

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The United States is embarked upon an ambitious program of western hemispheric economic integration about which its domestic body politic is decidedly ambivalent. The process in which the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was approved in 1993 re- vealed deep divisions between the major political parties and their various interest group constituencies concerning the appropriate scope of an economic integration agenda. The Mexican peso crisis that began in December 1994 provoked a deep crisis of confidence regarding Mexico's readiness to participate in a mature economic partnership with the United States and Canada. Subsequent revela- tions relating to corruption infecting …

Mimosa 1997, Jacksonville State University Jan 1997

Mimosa 1997, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Changing U.S. Tax Jurisdiction: Expatriates, Immigrants, And The Need For A Coherent Tax Policy, Jeffrey M. Colon Jan 1997

Changing U.S. Tax Jurisdiction: Expatriates, Immigrants, And The Need For A Coherent Tax Policy, Jeffrey M. Colon

Faculty Scholarship

One of the most contentious tax legislative battles of the 104th Congress erupted over the Clinton administration's proposal to amend the U.S. tax rules applicable to expatriates. The administration proposed taxing the abandonment of either U.S. citizenship or long-term U.S. tax residency. The administration's proposal responded to a number of articles in the popular press that described the U.S. tax benefits of expatriation and divulged the names of well-heeled expatriates. Proponents claimed that Congress needed to revise the taxation of expatriates to prevent "billionaire Benedict Arnolds" from avoiding "their fair share" of U.S. income taxes. Opponents argued that the Clinton …

Environmental Risk Factors And Cancer In The Charleston Heart Study, Vicki Bishop Benard Jan 1997

Environmental Risk Factors And Cancer In The Charleston Heart Study, Vicki Bishop Benard

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Existing research suggests that a variety of environmental factors play an important role in cancer mortality. The association between some of these factors and cancer mortality was examined using data from the Charleston Heart Study, a thirty-five year prospective cohort. Baseline measurements for tobacco use, place of residence, occupation, education, water supply and physical activity were made in 1960/63 on 2,283 participants. The vital status of the cohort was ascertained through 1994, and the underlying cause of death as determined by the nosologist was used to define cancer mortality. There were 294 cancer deaths identified over the 35-year period. Statistical …
