Challenging Our Prejudices, Developing An Inclusionary Vision, Elaine A. Pfalzgraf Jan 1997

Challenging Our Prejudices, Developing An Inclusionary Vision, Elaine A. Pfalzgraf

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The people who live in our community are more diverse from each other than at any time in our history. They are diverse not only in the areas of race and ethnicity, but also in the areas of sexual preference, physical ability and disability, income levels, age, religion, and family constellation.

How can we as a community work collaboratively to bring about not only tolerance but acceptance, inclusion, and celebration of the diversity of our people? What can we do to make certain that harsh and destructive polarization, alienation, exclusion, and isolation does not occur and that inclusion, involvement, engagement, …

They Met At Lockridge's Mill, Dieter C. Ullrich Jan 1997

They Met At Lockridge's Mill, Dieter C. Ullrich

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In the twilight hours of May 5th 1862, a lone detachment of Union cavalry calmly dismounted for a brief rest near a small river crossing called Lockridge's Mills in Weakley County, Tennessee. Pickets were organized and sent south from the crossing on the Dresden-Mayfield road as a precaution. As the pickets departed, the rest of the troops unfastened saddles, watered horses and began to prepare supper. Three picket lines were strategically placed along the road, the furthest from the encampment being about a half mile. Not long after the final picket was organized Confederate skirmishers attacked. A line of defense …

G97-1326 Crabapples For Nebraska Landscapes, Don Steinegger, John E. Watkins Jan 1997

G97-1326 Crabapples For Nebraska Landscapes, Don Steinegger, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the selection, care and disease possibilities of crabapples.

Many of the diminutive flowering trees are not hardy in Nebraska. One notable exception: the ornamental crabapple tree (Malus). By carefully selecting the planting site and the cultivar, the beauty of flowering crabs can be enjoyed in any part of the state.

Regardless of the season, crabapples lend landscape color and interest. The winter branch pattern and bark color are as much an asset as spring's flower color.

Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo Jan 1997

Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

Sacrificing Legislative Integrity At The Altar Of Appropriations Riders: A Constitutional Crisis, Sandi Zellmer Jan 1997

Sacrificing Legislative Integrity At The Altar Of Appropriations Riders: A Constitutional Crisis, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The technique of appending substantive provisions to appropriations bills has become a favorite tool of the legislative trade in recent years. Congress has employed appropriations riders to dictate the outcome of public policy issues ranging from abortion to oil development in pristine wilderness areas. Riders have been used with particularly destructive effect to circumvent long-standing environmental policies, especially those involving the use of natural resources and public lands. In many cases, the policies affected were the result of decades of activity in Congress and in the courts, and retain broad public and legislative support. Appropriations riders have also allowed these …

Urban Renewal: The Huntington Experience, Mark B. Bugher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study is based on the premise that restrictive regulations of the Huntington, West Virginia Urban Renewal Authority had a detrimental effect on new development in the downtown area of that city during the period between 1958 to the present. Background research was conducted on the history of urban renewal at the federal, state, and local levels to better understand the setting for events that occurred during the stated time frame. Using mostly urban renewal documents and interviews with local community leaders, an analysis was made of each urban renewal project undertaken in Huntington. Individual requirements of the Urban Renewal …

Association Between Plasma Homocysteine, Vitamin Status, And Extracranial Carotid-Artery Stenosis In The Framingham Study Population, Jacob Selhub, Paul F. Jacques, Andrew G. Bostrom, Ralph B. D'Agostino, Peter W. F. Wilson, Albert J. Belanger, Daniel H. O'Leary, Philip A. Wolf, David Rush, Ernst J. Schaefer, Irwin H. Rosenberg

United States Public Health Resources

Recent epidemiologic studies suggest that elevated homocysteine concentrations in plasma represent a risk factor for vascular disease and stroke. In the present study, we analyzed plasma samples from the 20th biannual examination of the Framingham Heart Study cohort to determine distribution of plasma homocysteine concentrations, with emphasis on relationships to vitamins that are involved in homocysteine metabolism and prevalence of carotid artery stenosis. Results showed that homocysteine was positively correlated with age. After controlling for age and sex, homocysteine exhibited strong inverse correlation with plasma folate, and weaker correlations with plasma vitamin B12 and pyridoxal- 5' -phosphate. Homocysteine was …

Cystathionine Β-Synthase Deficiency: Metabolic Aspects, S. Harvey Mudd Jan 1997

Cystathionine Β-Synthase Deficiency: Metabolic Aspects, S. Harvey Mudd

United States Public Health Resources

Cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) deficiency was first demonstrated in 1964 in an eight-year-old mentally retarded girl with bilaterally dislocated optic lenses who excreted abnormally elevated amounts of homocystine in her urine. Patients with similar metabolic abnormalities and clinical findings had first been discovered 2 years earlier by Carson and her colleagues during a survey of mentally backward children in Northern Ireland. CBS deficiency has proven to be the most frequently encountered of the human genetic diseases causing homocystinuria and severe hyperhomocyst(e)inemia. Worldwide, it is detected with a frequency of about 1: 344,000 by screening programs of the newborn, but this is …

Blood Homocysteine Levels In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (Nhanes Iii) In The United States: Preliminary Findings By Age And Sex, Irwin H. Rosenberg, Jacob Selhub, Paul F. Jacques, Barbara A. Bowman, Elaine W. Gunter, Clifford L. Johnson, R. S. Murphy Jan 1997

Blood Homocysteine Levels In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (Nhanes Iii) In The United States: Preliminary Findings By Age And Sex, Irwin H. Rosenberg, Jacob Selhub, Paul F. Jacques, Barbara A. Bowman, Elaine W. Gunter, Clifford L. Johnson, R. S. Murphy

United States Public Health Resources

Evidence from scores of observational studies from many parts of the world have demonstrated an association between elevated blood total homocysteine levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. These conditions are more prevalent in males than in females in virtually all populations studied, and their prevalence increases with advancing age. A much smaller body of data exists that describes an increasing tendency to higher homocysteine levels with increasing age.

There have been no previous reports of blood homocysteine levels measured in a cross-sectional sample throughout the age spectrum from childhood through the elderly. However, the …

The Etiology Of Neural Tube Defects, J. M. Scott, D. G. Weir, A. Molloy, J. Mcpartlin, Leslie Daly, P. Kirke, M. Conley, J. Lee, J. Mills Jan 1997

The Etiology Of Neural Tube Defects, J. M. Scott, D. G. Weir, A. Molloy, J. Mcpartlin, Leslie Daly, P. Kirke, M. Conley, J. Lee, J. Mills

United States Public Health Resources

Evidence continues to confirm that periconceptional ingestion of folic acid can prevent neural tube defects, although the basis of this prevention has been unclear. To further elucidate the mechanism by which this occurs, blood samples were collected from more than 50,000 pregnant women and the samples analyzed for red cell folate, plasma folate, plasma vitamin B12, and plasma homocysteine levels. Based on the results, it appears that the beneficial effect of folic acid is in overcoming a metabolic block in a folatedependent enzyme or transport process. It is likely that methionine synthase may be directly or indirectly involved.

The neural …
