Marquis Astolphe De Custine's Influence On Russia's Nineteenth Century Intellectuals, Shannon L. Snyder Jan 1997

Marquis Astolphe De Custine's Influence On Russia's Nineteenth Century Intellectuals, Shannon L. Snyder

McNair Scholars Journal

The Marquis Astolphe de Custine was a product of the French Revolution and, as a result, disliked much of what was occurring politically in France. He went to Russia in search of the ideals found within the ancient regime, but returned a more staunch believer in democracy. His work influenced a great many Russian intellectuals and spurred many of them to critique their own government at a time when doing so could mean death.

Applications Of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy In The School Setting, Joanne M. Nelson Jan 1997

Applications Of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy In The School Setting, Joanne M. Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

As a result of the many demands, as well as lack of time, school counselors need to work with an effective short-term theory. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) fits this description because the general goal of REBT is to attain positive mental health within the least amount of time and with minimal expenditure.

Because of its efficiency, and its applicability to individual, small group, classroom, and adults, school counselors should consider using REBT in the school setting. The preventative and self-help focus of REBT, and the teaching materials developed around this theory fit well into the school setting. By applying …

Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West Jan 1997

Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West

Graduate Research Papers

Contemporary research on caregiving has focused mainly on caregiver burden experienced by children caring for elderly parents. Most gerontological research (e.g., Greenberg, 1991; Greenberg & Becker, 1988) has stressed the movement of caregiver burden and related stress down through the intergenerational family system from parents to children. This research has ignored the impact of caregiver burden and stress on aging parents whose adult children have experienced major life stressors. In this situation, the movement of the caregiver burden moves up through the intergenerational family system as parents assume the caregiving role for adult children.

Ec97-2505 Signs And Symptoms Of Pesticide Poisoning, Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg, Edward F. Vitzthum Jan 1997

Ec97-2505 Signs And Symptoms Of Pesticide Poisoning, Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg, Edward F. Vitzthum

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Accidental exposure or overexposure to pesticides can have serious implications. The potential for pesticide accidents is real. It has been estimated that more than 36 million pounds of pesticide active ingredients are used annually in Nebraska. While most of these pesticides can be used with relatively little risk (as long as label directions are followed), some are extremely toxic and require special precautions.

The Poison Center, at the Children's Hospital in Omaha, reports that agricultural pesticides are responsible for 4.6 percent of all accidental exposures reported. A recent study surveyed callers to The Poison Center who were exposed to agricultural …

Ec97-1874 Diseases Affecting Grain And Seed Quality In Wheat, John E. Watkins, Larry J. Prentice Jan 1997

Ec97-1874 Diseases Affecting Grain And Seed Quality In Wheat, John E. Watkins, Larry J. Prentice

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Seed-associated diseases of wheat draw considerable attention because they often reduce both grain quality and yield. In addition ergot and scab diseases bring in a third dimension because toxins associated with each present a potentially serious health risk to humans and animals. Yield losses caused by smuts are roughly equal to the percentage of smutted heads in the field; however, losses from black point, scab or ergot are less easily measured. For example, wheat in the soft dough stage that is infected by one of the scab pathogens may still produce plump, good test weight kernels resulting in minimal yield …

G97-1314 Medication Withdrawal In Beef Cattle, Dicky D. Griffin, Dale Grotelueschen Jan 1997

G97-1314 Medication Withdrawal In Beef Cattle, Dicky D. Griffin, Dale Grotelueschen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide lists the current withdrawal times for medications used in beef cattle.

Using proper livestock medications is very important. Proper use not only ensures maximal benefits from the medication but minimizes the chances of an unwanted residue. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has worked hard to develop a premiere quality assurance program. In conjunction with other national and state beef and veterinary associations, the Beef Quality Assurance program now extends to almost every state in the nation. As a result, the safety and quality of beef has never been better. The outstanding record includes having an extremely low rate …

Conservation Implications Of A Multi-Scale Study Of Flammulated Owl (Otus Flammeolus) Habitat Use In The Northern Rocky Mountains, Usa, Vita Wright, Sallie J. Hejl, Richard L. Hutto Jan 1997

Conservation Implications Of A Multi-Scale Study Of Flammulated Owl (Otus Flammeolus) Habitat Use In The Northern Rocky Mountains, Usa, Vita Wright, Sallie J. Hejl, Richard L. Hutto

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Our multi-scale analysis of Flammulated Owl (Otus flammeolus) habitat use in the northern Rocky Mountains indicates some landscapes may be unsuitable for this species. As a result, there may be less habitat available for Flammulated Owls than thought based on the results of microhabitat studies. Thus, we suggest Flammulated Owl habitat conservation measures be based on the results of landscape-level, as well as microhabitat studies. Habitat conservation and restoration efforts in the ponderosa pine ecosystem should retain large trees, large snags, understory tree thickets, and grassland openings within landscapes that contain an abundance of suitable forest types.

The Second Time As Tragedy: The Assisted Suicide Cases And The Heritage Of Roe V. Wade, Seth F. Kreimer Jan 1997

The Second Time As Tragedy: The Assisted Suicide Cases And The Heritage Of Roe V. Wade, Seth F. Kreimer

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In this Article, Professor Kreimer assesses the assisted suicide cases of last Term as contributions to constitutional jurisprudence. He suggests that the cases mark an end of a generation of discord over the legitimacy of substantive due process and a triumph of the proponents of extratextual fundamental rights, Nonetheless, he argues that Justice Rehnquist's majority opinion cannot sustain its claim that an "established method" of substantive due process analysis rooted in history and tradition explains both the Court's abortion cases and Glucksberg. Likewise, while Justice Souter's call for "arbitrariness review" rooted in the common law can account for the outcome …

State Of Maine Property Tax Reform, Kim Bridgham, Annie Lunt Jan 1997

State Of Maine Property Tax Reform, Kim Bridgham, Annie Lunt

Faculty Publications

In January, 1997, Governor Angus King established a 10 person committee representing a broad cross-section of citizens interest to investigate what changes are needed in the Maine tax system to address the issue of high property taxes. The Governor's Select Committee on Property Tax Reform (the "Committee") was charged with examining how to reduce the burden of the property tax. The Committee was asked to recommend steps the State and local governments in Maine could take to reduce the burden of the property tax as well as changes in the way that the property tax is administered and collected to …

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead Jan 1997

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Over the past few decades our focus on learning science has evolved (Aikenhead, 1996; Cobern, 1993, 1994; Solomon, 1994). The psychological perspectives on the individual learner of earlier years, such as Piaget, Ausubel, and personal constructivism (West and Pines, 1985), have expanded to encompass sociological perspectives that contextualize learning in social settings; for instance, social constructivism, science for specific social purposes, and situated cognition (Goodnow, 1990; Hennessy, 1993; Layton, Davey and Jenkins, 1986; O'Loughlin, 1992; Solomon, 1987; Tharp and Gallimore, 1988). This chapter addresses the next stage in the evolution of our focus on learning science—an anthropological perspective that contextualizes …

Political, Economic And Social Dominance Of Major Cities In East Asia During The Twentieth Century, Michael B. Toney, Chalon Keller Jan 1997

Political, Economic And Social Dominance Of Major Cities In East Asia During The Twentieth Century, Michael B. Toney, Chalon Keller

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

One of the greatest shift in human societies has been the change from dispersed settlement patterns toward a complex urban pattern. Prior to the industrialization there were only a few urban places scattered throughout the world and none could compare with numerous cities of today with respect to size and complexity. In recent decades the growth of cities in Asia has been particularly remarkable as there has been an increase in the number of medium sized cities and the growth of a number of mega cities. This urbanization of the worlds population has corresponded with other fundamental changes in human …
