The Effects Of Trade Orientation And Human Capital On Total Factor Productivity, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay Dec 1997

The Effects Of Trade Orientation And Human Capital On Total Factor Productivity, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay

Economics Working Papers

We study the effects of trade orientation and human capital on total factor productivity for a pooled cross-section, time-series sample of developed and developing countries. We first estimate total factor productivity from a parsimonious specification of the aggregate production function involving output per worker, capital per worker, and the labor force, both with and without the stock of human capital. Then we consider a number of potential determinants of total factor productivity growth including several measures of trade orientation as well as a measure of human capital. We find that a high degree of openness benefits total factor productivity and …

Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis Dec 1997

Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Settlers of New Orleans brought with them ideas of gardens that influenced the way they shaped gardens in the colony. Although the influence of those ideas has been acknowledged in studies of New Orleans gardens, specific connections between the ideas and gardens in New Orleans have not been made. To illuminate some of those connections, this study focuses on one garden pattern — a composition of long, rectangular planting beds -- that is common to at least fifty gardens in New Orleans and to European gardens dating from the ninth century. A developmental history that chronicles the use of the …

Mastodon, 80% Complete: Poems, Jonathan Johnson

Dissertations

Many of the poems in this collection are set in the vast woods and along the Lake Superior coastline of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Others take place in and around the poet's remote cabin in northern Idaho where the Selkirk, Bitteroot, and Cabinet mountain ranges converge. However, they all take as their definition of wilderness the complete external beyond the individual consciousness, including the body, other people, and the decaying cultural landscape, as well as vistas of yet unmolested nature. The poems chronicle an ongoing attempt to occupy the borderlands of faith between imaginative will and allegiance to the world, that …

Gender, Ethnicity And Space: The Case Of Racial Ethnic Minority Women Telecommuters In Omaha, Ne, Hope Kawabata Dec 1997

Gender, Ethnicity And Space: The Case Of Racial Ethnic Minority Women Telecommuters In Omaha, Ne, Hope Kawabata

Student Work

Telecommuting is a labor process in which employees work from home on a regular basis, but maintain contact with the office through telecommunications technology such as computer networks, facsimile machines, voice messaging systems, and so on. Telecommuting has become very popular in recent years; however, little is known about its social and spatial impacts. Preliminary research on gender and telecommuting has shown that telecommuting tends to reinforce a traditional division of domestic labor and identification of women with the home; however, whether this is the case for ethnic minority women is unknown. This thesis research used in-depth, semistructured interviews to …

The National German-American Alliance, 1901 -1918: Cultural Politics And Ethnicity In Peace And War, Charles Thomas Johnson Dec 1997

The National German-American Alliance, 1901 -1918: Cultural Politics And Ethnicity In Peace And War, Charles Thomas Johnson

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to tell the story of the National German- American Alliance, an organization of middle to upper-middle class well-educated professionals formed in 1901 to promote and preserve aspects of German culture in the United States. Increasingly, however, it found itself drawn into controversial political and diplomatic issues in the rapid political, social and international change that marked the first two decades of the twentieth century.

The dissertation begins with a review of German-America from colonial times to 1899 and serves as a background for the founding of the Alliance within the context of the growth …

Block Scheduling: From Possibility To Reality?, Frederic M. Muse Dec 1997

Block Scheduling: From Possibility To Reality?, Frederic M. Muse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines teacher practices and student learning as perceived by teachers within public high schools that have implemented block scheduling. Comparisons are made between the possibilities advanced by block scheduling advocates and the actual results as interpreted from the data gathered. Comparisons are made between teaching and learning with the traditional schedule and the manner in which it takes place with block scheduling. Open-ended questionnaires were developed for use with voluntary participants who had worked with traditional scheduling and now taught with some form of block scheduling. Participants recorded observations based solely upon personal perceptions of experiences with students …

The Cincs' Strategies: The Combatant Command Process, William W. Mendel Col (Ret), Graham H. Turbiville Dr. Dec 1997

The Cincs' Strategies: The Combatant Command Process, William W. Mendel Col (Ret), Graham H. Turbiville Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The authors report their observations of the different ways combatant commanders-in-chief (CINCs) produce a strategy document, and suggest that new joint doctrine is needed to bring a degree of regularity and orderliness to the CINCs' strategic planning process. The CINCs' Strategies: The Combatant Command Process provides a brief look at the CINCs' strategy objectives and concepts in order to place the planning process in context. The focus of the study, however, is on the process itself as it exists and could be further developed. With our National Security and National Military Strategies so clearly directed toward shaping the international environment, …

Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Ecology And Demography In The North Dakota Badlands, Jerry J. Feist Dec 1997

Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Ecology And Demography In The North Dakota Badlands, Jerry J. Feist

Theses and Dissertations

The bighorn sheep (Oyis canadensis califomiana) in the North Dakota Badlands were studied in an effort to obtain baseline ecological data and examine the effects of human disturbance (primarily oil development) on their ranges, habitat use, movements and reproductive performance. The study was conducted from May and April, 1992 and 1993, respectively, through December of each year. Additionally, the summer of 1994 was used to complete habitat classification in the field.

Eight bighorn ewes were captured by helicopter and net-gun in each of 2 primary study areas (one highly impacted by oil development and the other less impacted) and fitted …

Effects Of Catholic School Attendance On Student Achievement: A Review And Extension Of Research, Thomas Hoffer Dec 1997

Effects Of Catholic School Attendance On Student Achievement: A Review And Extension Of Research, Thomas Hoffer

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper begins with a review of basic descriptive data on achievement differences between public and Catholic school students and the main theories intended to explain Catholic sector effects on student achievement. The main theories are cast in terms of competitive markets, the communities in which the schools are embedded, and the historically institutionalized purposes of the schools. The analytical research is then reviewed and extended with some original analyses from recently collected national survey data on high school students. The main points from the review and extension of empirical research are as follows: (a) Catholic high schools have positive …

Encouraging Marketing Research, Ronald B. Larson Dec 1997

Encouraging Marketing Research, Ronald B. Larson

Journal of Extension

Some business people are unfamiliar with the need for or the benefits from marketing research. One tool for communicating the value of marketing and marketing research is regional sales indices. These indices can help highlight market heterogeneity, illustrate marketing complexities, and encourage the use of regional events. They can also be used to help identify potential marketing partners, guide test market selection, and assist with volume forecasting. By including analyses of these sales development indices in presentations to business groups, greater interest in conducting marketing research and in supporting marketing programs may be generated.
