A Study Of The Perceptions Among Counselors And High School Students Regarding The Need For A Community College In Cape May County, New Jersey, Michelle D. Myles May 1997

A Study Of The Perceptions Among Counselors And High School Students Regarding The Need For A Community College In Cape May County, New Jersey, Michelle D. Myles

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare high school guidance counselors' perceptions in general regarding college attendance with those of their graduating students. It was posited, as well, that guidance counselor rankings and the student rankings of five college-choice aspects would be related; namely, that the guidance counselors' choices would be ranked in the same order that the high school students' choices were ranked, and that the students' choices would be significantly related to those aspects relevant to community college attendance. A pilot study was conducted first over phone interviews of the guidance counselors from the four public high …

Mother To Child : Connections Between Africans And African Americans As Seen In Selected Works Of Chinua Achebe And Toni Morrison, Reba T. Brown May 1997

Mother To Child : Connections Between Africans And African Americans As Seen In Selected Works Of Chinua Achebe And Toni Morrison, Reba T. Brown

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Selected works of African writer Chinua Achebe and African American author Toni Morrison display similarities which reveal significant connections between African and African American cultures. In Achebe's Things Fall Apart and No Longer At Ease and Morrison's Sula and Song of Solomon, major characters reveal commonalities in their various relationships. Thus Okonkwo, Obi, Sula and Milkman engage in familial, spiritual and communal relationships. it is revealed that Africans and the African Americans have a bond, unlike the bond between a mother and child. Externally the people of each culture have been shaped by the circumstances of separate environn1ents. There is …

Continental Scale Variability In Ecosystem Processes: Models, Data, And The Role Of Disturbance, David S. Schimel, Rob Braswell May 1997

Continental Scale Variability In Ecosystem Processes: Models, Data, And The Role Of Disturbance, David S. Schimel, Rob Braswell

Earth Sciences

Management of ecosystems at large regional or continental scales and determination of the vulnerability of ecosystems to large-scale changes in climate or atmospheric chemistry require understanding how ecosystem processes are governed at large spatial scales. A collaborative project, the Vegetation and Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP), addressed modeling of multiple resource limitation at the scale of the conterminous United States, and the responses of ecosystems to environmental change. In this paper, we evaluate the model-generated patterns of spatial variability within and between ecosystems using Century, TEM, and Biome-BGC, and the relationships between modeled water balance, nutrients, and carbon dynamics. …

The Effects Of Hydrilla Infestation On Selected Wintering Waterfowl: Santee Copper Lake System, South Carolina, William Davis May 1997

The Effects Of Hydrilla Infestation On Selected Wintering Waterfowl: Santee Copper Lake System, South Carolina, William Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hydrilla is an exotic aquatic weed that was introduced into Florida in the 1950's. Since that time it has spread rapidly from lake to lake throughout the southeast and beyond. The Santee Cooper lake system in eastern South Carolina was infested with the weed in the early 1980's. Since that time lake managers have sought ways to eliminate the aquatic plant and have succeeded to a great extent through the use of sterile grass carp as a biological control agent. This paper, however, contains evidence to support the view that hydrilla is actually a beneficial habitat for many species on …

"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick May 1997

"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The life and art of Bill John Roth offer a paradox to the study of folklore and folk art. The personal and public nature of Bill's art is exemplified through his mural Geographic Hieroglyphics In God's Own Handwriting. On the surface the art and artist are seemingly detached from the community, but upon closer investigation this is not the case. I have explored the notion of "outsider" art, the problems associated with artistic interpretation and the difficulties of labelling artists according to academic and elitist standards. Thus the contextual background of the artist and community are important aspects of this …

Environmental And Outdoor Education For The 21st Century, Charles Yaple May 1997

Environmental And Outdoor Education For The 21st Century, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

As we rapidly approach a new century it seems appropriate to assess the status of environmental and outdoor education and seek direction for the future. One way to do this is to ask counsel of professionals in the field. Taproot editor Charles Yaple interviewed one of the nation's leading environmental and outdoor educators: Dr. Clifford Knapp, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Outdoor Teacher Education at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Knapp has authored more than 100 articles and several books including Just Beyond the Classroom and Lasting Lessons: A Teachers Guide to Reflecting on Experience. His teaching and scholarly …

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard May 1997

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability for wetlands to purify contaminated water is not a new concept. Natural wetlands have been cleansing water within our environment for ages. After studying the process of natural wetlands the same concept was applied to municipal waste. It is the success of constructed wetlands treating municipal waste that created the new idea for the application of a wetland system to treat wastewater from livestock facilities. Through proper design and management, constructed wetlands may be useful for reducing the nutrient concentration of waste (Rieck el al., 1996). Taking into consideration the higher nutrient loads of livestock waste, the same …
