The Two Faces Of Peace Building, Michael Harbottle, Eirwen Harbottle Jun 1997

The Two Faces Of Peace Building, Michael Harbottle, Eirwen Harbottle

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

This has been the case in the way in which the United Nations has been using peacemaking, peacekeeping and, more recently, peacebuilding. Agenda for Peace, produced by the UN Secretary General in 1992 suffers from some ambiguity in this respect. For example, it refers to the military performing a peacemaking role. The military cannot make peace, that is the role of the diplomat or politician. All that the military can do is to allay, defuse and help to end the manifest violence so that the peacemaking process can …

Indochinese Mental Health In North America: Measures, Status, And Treatments, Thanh V. Tran, Donna L. Ferullo

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The massive influx of Indochinese refugees and immigrants to North America since the end of the Indochina war, especially to the United States of America, has resulted in numerous multi-disciplinary efforts to document and study their mental well-being. As a group, Indochinese Americans arrived from war-torn countries where many had experienced various forms of trauma, poverty, and oppression. Their pre-migration experiences, and experiences in adjusting and adapting to the new life in the host society have influenced their mental health status and overall quality of life in various ways. This paper analyzes and synthesizes a wealth of multi-disciplinary research on …

St. Tammany Growth And Development Survey (June, 1997), Susan E. Howell Jun 1997

St. Tammany Growth And Development Survey (June, 1997), Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

Residents of St. Tammany are negative about recent trends in the quality of life in their parish.  Anti-growth sentiment in St. Tammany has doubled in the past five years, and growth is considered by far to be the biggest problem facing the parish. Concern about growth-related problems is increasing. Today a majority of residents is opposed to both new residential and commercial development. Growth-related government services, such as drainage, traffic control, zoning, and preserving wetlands are rated "poor" or "very poor" by at least a third of the residents. Twenty-five percent say they sometimes smell sewage in their neighborhood. Residents …

The Effects Of Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (Emdr) On Self-Reported Test Anxiety In College Students, John C. Hampel Jun 1997

The Effects Of Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (Emdr) On Self-Reported Test Anxiety In College Students, John C. Hampel

Dissertations

Test anxiety is a common problem among students in western culture due to the importance of academic achievement and the consequences for failure. Many consider test anxiety to be primarily an issue of poor study habits and test readiness. However, some students who appear to possess excellent study habits also appear to experience severe anxiety during tests. A recent meta-analysis of test anxiety research substantiated these claims, finding that test anxiety appeared to be an emotionally-based as opposed to a cognitively-based problem. Despite these findings, the etiologies for test anxiety remain unknown. Similar to nearly all DSM-IV diagnostic categories, test …

Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg Jun 1997

Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg

Pacific Studies

In the 1980s, the quality of the jobs held by Pacific Islander householders generally improved, while job quality declined for the average American householder. The factors that improved the economic position of a Pacific Islander household--education, work experience, and good English language skills-- were the same as those that improved the position of other households in the United States. Over the decade, Pacific Islander householders generally acquired more of these productive attributes, which helped them to find employment, get access to better jobs, and increase their earnings.
