Review Of The Turn To The Native: Studies In Criticism And Culture By Arnold Krupat, Ward Churchill

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the final essay of his most recent book, The Turn to the Native: Studies in Criticism and Culture, self-styled "ethnocritic" Arnold Krupat wonders aloud whether, through his interpretive activities, he hasn't become a "leftist colonizer" of the very sort critiqued so scathingly by Tunisian revolutionary theorist Albert Memmi more than three decades ago (p. 126). This worthy query, seemingly posed mainly as a rhetorical device allowing its author to absolve himself of the charge-he shortly concludes that simply by being "someone who reads and writes about Native American literature" he has made himself "useful without vanity" and is …

The Sacred Black Hills An Ethnohistorical Review, Linea Sundstrom

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Black Hills area is widely recognized as sacred in the context of traditional Lakota and Cheyenne belief systems. Questions arise, however, regarding the authenticity and historical depth of these beliefs.1 Some researchers assert that the concept of the sacred Black Hills is little more than a twentieth century scheme to promote tourism or part of a legal strategy to gain the return of Black Hills lands to Lakota and Cheyenne tribal governments.2 While many Lakotas and Cheyennes today express a strong spiritual link to the Black Hills,3 some historians have questioned whether today's beliefs about the …

Enhancing The Middle School Curriculum Through Service Learning, Ron Schukar Jul 1997

Enhancing The Middle School Curriculum Through Service Learning, Ron Schukar

Curriculum

On a warm April morning, 80 eighth-grade students from North Middle School in Aurora, Colorado, gathered in nearby Sand Creek Park to erect bat houses. "Why bat houses?" a local news reporter asked. "To control the insect population," one of the students answered. "We have reclaimed this park for all the plant and animal species that live here and for the people of our community who want to enjoy the surroundings," another student offered. "Because of the water and foliage, insects, especially mosquitoes, are a problem. We don't want the city to apply insecticides in the park, so we are …

China Must Not "Wait Until The Evening": Resisting Mass Motorization's Assault On Bicycles And Mass Transit, Adam Karp Jul 1997

China Must Not "Wait Until The Evening": Resisting Mass Motorization's Assault On Bicycles And Mass Transit, Adam Karp

Washington International Law Journal

China, and other developing nations, stand at a transportation planning crossroads—whether to follow the American highway/privatized motorization model or to optimize their existing mass transit/nonmotorized transportation model. This Comment charts the history of transportation development in China and indicates its destination in light of China's recent embrace of the car industry as a "pillar" of the nation's economy. It then considers motor vehicles' adverse effects, and assesses the value of mass and nonmotorized transportation as viable alternatives. In order to stall or reverse a process not supported wholeheartedly by the Chinese citizenry, this Comment determines whether China's internal city planning …

Roman Roads In The Upper Galilee And Lower Golan Regions: Relationships To Natural Migratory Routes, April L. Whitten Jul 1997

Roman Roads In The Upper Galilee And Lower Golan Regions: Relationships To Natural Migratory Routes, April L. Whitten

Student Work

The geoarchaeological problem herein was to identify the Roman roads in the Upper Galilee and Lower Golan regions of Israel. The primary objective was to identify an anthropogenic relationship of land use as a function of the physical geography of the region. The secondary objective was to identify the most favorable routes of passage to the ancient city of Bethsaida. This thesis pursued a multi-disciplinary approach to meeting the objectives. Field investigation was conducted to acquire data on the elevation, slope, aspect, lithology, and hydrology of the terrain regarding cost factor values of travel by foot. An archaeological investigation was …

Private Reason(S) And Public Spheres: Sexuality And Enlightenment In Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jul 1997

Private Reason(S) And Public Spheres: Sexuality And Enlightenment In Kant, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Pivoting on the essay on enlightenment as a central text and referring to other thematically relevant writings by Kant, this study qualifies the view that the Kantian concepts of enlightenment and the public sphere are represented solely in a neutral, disinterested manner as open and democratic forums for all men and women. By recovering unconscious inscriptions of gender, sexuality, and class in contradistinction to the dominant "democratic" reception of Kant, this essay shows how infrastructural sexual dynamics co-articulate the surface discourses of enlightenment, the public and private spheres, and the beautiful and the sublime. As non-cognitive structures, these discourses inscribe …

The Role Of State Law In An Era Of Federal Preemption: Lessons From Environmental Regulation, John P. Dwyer

Law and Contemporary Problems

Using environmental regulation as an example, Dwyer discusses the role of state law in an era ruled by federal preemption. The present hybrid system of national standards and state implementation and enforcement may be a reasonable accomodation of both state and national interests.

Two Perspectives On Interventions And Humanitarian Operations, Earl H. Tilford Dr., David Tucker Dr., Robert B. Oakley Amb

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A recent symposium cosponsored by the Strategic Studies Institute and the University of Kentucky's Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce examined that grey area between war and peace, between intervention in support of national interests and humanitarian operations which, while necessary and appropriate, also put Americans in danger while consuming precious and ever scarcer resources. The following two papers from that symposium complement each other well. In the first, a revised after action report on his experiences in Somalia, Ambassador Robert B. Oakley, a career foreign service officer who served as Special Envoy to Somalia during both the present …

The World As A Multilevel Mosaic: Understanding Regions, Robert Stoddard Jul 1997

The World As A Multilevel Mosaic: Understanding Regions, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The geographic concern with the organization of area involves the concept of regions and regionalization—the spatial division of Earth’s surface into homogeneous classes. Because regions provide a construct that helps in comprehending the complex variations in the world, they are an essential teaching element. ... Teachers can help students understand that people construct regions to interpret Earth’s complexity. Mastering that concept is essential because understanding the idea of region and the process of regionalization is fundamental to being geographically informed.

Service Learning As Civic Participation, Todd Clark, Marshall Croddy, William Hayes, Susan Philips

Service Learning, General

A central question in the service learning field is how service can best educate youth for active citizenship. For more than a decade, the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) has struggled with this question. We have introduced and experimented with various service programs because we have seen firsthand the value of service - how it engenders personal efficacy, empathy, and a sense of responsibility.

Development Of A Photon Counting System For Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar Signal Detection, Bradley Allen Eccles Jul 1997

Development Of A Photon Counting System For Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar Signal Detection, Bradley Allen Eccles

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A photon counting system was assembled and integrated into an existing ozone differential absorption lidar signal detection system to improve the range of ozone measurement. Results of data extraction from decaying ozone return signals are presented. Photomultiplier tube detector models EMI 9214Q and EMI 9B17Q are evaluated and characterized. Detector operating performance was based on tube quantum efficiency, gain, dark current, and linearity. The influence of photomultiplier tube characteristics on photon counting performance are discussed along with the recommended optimum photon counting operating conditions. Two photomultiplier gating schemes, focus grid and four dynode gating, are described for use in photon …

U.S. National Security: Beyond The Cold War, Robert Ellsworth Amb, Morton H. Halperin Dr., David Jablonsky Dr., Lawrence Korb Dr. Jul 1997

U.S. National Security: Beyond The Cold War, Robert Ellsworth Amb, Morton H. Halperin Dr., David Jablonsky Dr., Lawrence Korb Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

U.S. national security is a subject that has been under intense scrutiny since the end of the Cold War. What constitutes such security for the United States as this country approaches the new century? Are the ends, ways, and means of our national security and national military strategies sufficient to provide for the nation's future? And above all, as this country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Security Act of 1947, are the institutions that resulted from that act still sufficient for the post-Cold War era?

With these questions in mind, the Strategic Studies Institute and Dickinson College's Clarke …

1. Significant Developments During the Academic Year 1995-96 During much of this time, the main galleries were closed due to the extensive renovations of the performing arts spaces and the shared lobby area in the Fine Arts Center. We slowly began to emerge during the months of April and May, but full operations could not resume until fall. Needless to say, this extended period of working around reconfigured storage (all prints and photographs were temporarily housed in the main gallery) and non-existent exhibition space was difficult for the staff; for our general public, and - especially - for faculty and …
