Developing A National Coastal Zone Management Program For Venezuela, Marisol Salazar Jan 1997

Developing A National Coastal Zone Management Program For Venezuela, Marisol Salazar

LLM Theses and Essays

The primary focus of this study is to develop a National Coastal Zone Management Program for Venezuela, a moderate, comprehensive, and an effective long-term program which allows the development and protection of the Venezuelan Coastal Zone now and in the future. This program must comply with the actual Venezuelan environmental laws and its administrative mechanisms. Also, it must help to control ecological, economic, commercial, social, and human pressures on the Venezuelan coastal area. The design of this project will be based on an analysis of the extensive experience of the U.S.A. coastal states under the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA); …

Analysis Of Maize (Zea Mays Subsp. Mays) Pollen: Normalizing The Effects Of Microscope?Slide Mounting Media On Diameter Determinations, Andrew Sluyter Jan 1997

Analysis Of Maize (Zea Mays Subsp. Mays) Pollen: Normalizing The Effects Of Microscope?Slide Mounting Media On Diameter Determinations, Andrew Sluyter

Faculty Publications

Maize (Zea mays subsp. mays) dominates the record of prehistoric agriculture in the Neotropics. Nonetheless, many significant questions of Zea systematics and evolution persist. Palynology provides a record central to addressing those questions, but determining pollen grain diameter remains a significant method- ological issue: diameter is a key characteristic in identification, and diameter seems to be space-time dependent - the latter phenomenon but little understood. One issue in analyzing diam- eter is the confounding effect of microscope-slide mounting media. This study provides correction factors to normalize diam- eter among silicon oil, glycerine jelly, and acrylic resin (du Pont Elvacite), the …

Landscape Change And Livestock In Sixteenth-Century New Spain: The Archival Data Base, Andrew Sluyter Jan 1997

Landscape Change And Livestock In Sixteenth-Century New Spain: The Archival Data Base, Andrew Sluyter

Faculty Publications

Despite the wealth of Mexican archival data pertinent to understanding the ecological interaction between livestock and landscape during the sixteenth century in New Spain, some fundamental methodological issues persist in the use of the mercedes, or land grants. The degree of completeness of the extant mercedes record and the de facto areal extents of the cattle and sheep estancias both remain uncertain. A cartographic method applied to mercedes for the central Veracruz lowlands addresses those issues and suggests a general method for rigorous analysis of the data base. That method demonstrates that the extant mercedes provide a nearly complete record …

Regional, Holocene Records Of The Human Dimension Of Global Change: Sea-Level And Land-Use Change In Prehistoric Mexico, Andrew Sluyter Jan 1997

Regional, Holocene Records Of The Human Dimension Of Global Change: Sea-Level And Land-Use Change In Prehistoric Mexico, Andrew Sluyter

Faculty Publications

Regional, Holocene records hold particular relevance for understanding the reciprocal nature of global environmental change and one of its major human dimensions: "sustainable agriculture", i.e., food production strategies which entail fewer causes of and are less susceptible to environmental change. In an epoch of accelerating anthropogenic transformation, those records reveal the protracted regional causes and consequences of change (often agricultural) in the global system as well as informing models of prehistoric, intensive agriculture which, because of long tenures and high productivities, suggest strategies for sustainable agricultural in the present. This study employs physiographic analysis and the palynological, geochemical record from …

Faculty Publications

Alu insertion polymorphisms (polymorphisms consisting of the presence/absence of an Alu element at a particular chromosomal location) offer several advantages over other nuclear DNA polymorphisms for human evolution studies. First, they are typed by rapid, simple, PCR-based assays; second, they are stable polymorphisms-newly inserted Alu elements rarely undergo deletion; third, the presence of an Alu element represents identity by descent-the probability that different Alu elements would independently insert into the exact same chromosomal location is negligible; and fourth, the ancestral state is known with certainty to be the absence of an Alu element. We report here a study of 8 …

"Wait A Minute. This Is Where I Came In." A Trial Lawyer's Search For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Steven H. Goldberg Jan 1997

"Wait A Minute. This Is Where I Came In." A Trial Lawyer's Search For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Steven H. Goldberg

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

My original answer to the question “Alternative to what?” was “the adversary system.” ADR held out the promise of a better way than the adversary system for handling at least some of the inevitable friction in society. I could not define “better” precisely, but it contained notions of faster, cheaper, less contentious, less aggravating, or more likely to leave the parties talking to each other when the process was over. My current answer to the question “Alternative to what?” is that ADR is not an alternative. Alternative Dispute Resolution courses have become Dispute Resolution. In this society, dispute resolution is …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 1997, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.
