Some Reflections At Winter Quarters, Richard E. Bennett
Some Reflections At Winter Quarters, Richard E. Bennett
Faculty Publications
On this Memorial Day weekend, it is altogether fitting and appropriate that we gather today at this sacred place to remember the lives of our progenitors everywhere. From Gettysburg to Hiroshima, from Arlington to Flanders Field, and from the city cemetery to the family plot, we honor our dead ancestors and friends long since stilled. Whether they died on the battle fields of war or perished in the labor of giving birth, we honor them. Whether on the trail to a new life in Oregon or a new chance in Ukraine, they all were the lifeline to our present bright …

Cries And Whispers: Environmental Hazards, Model Rule 1.6, And The Attorney's Conflicting Duties To Clients And Others, Irma S. Russell
Faculty Law Review Articles
This article assesses the operation of Model Rule 1.6 in light of environmental catastrophes and concludes that the realities of environmental dangers demand reassessment of the ABA rule on confidentiality.
Part II recounts the history and purpose of the duty of confidentiality. Part III examines the text, commentary, and legislative history of Model Rule 1.6. Part IV discusses modifications to Rule 1.6 by states that have adopted the Model Rules. Part V examines two predominant views of the attorney (as champion and as officer of the court) as they relate to the issue of confidentiality. Part VI assesses Rule 1.6 …

Common Higher Callings To Social Compassion: A Phenomenological Study Of Civic Praxis, Herbert J. Barker Edd
Common Higher Callings To Social Compassion: A Phenomenological Study Of Civic Praxis, Herbert J. Barker Edd
Dissertations
In recent decades there has been an increasing interest in the ethical dimensions of leadership. James MacGregor Burns' (1978) watershed work, Leadership, heralds an intellectual breakthrough for grasping the significance of a moral level of consciousness that is universal. Although Burns (1978) writes that humanistic psychology now allows for generalization about leadership process across cultures, there remains little research which frames leadership in a Global Ethic, in humanistic psychological constructs or as philosophical ideas of a universal ethical consciousness. Therefore, it is the purpose of this phenomenological study to gather and analyze narratives of altruistic leadership praxis for disclosures of …
Romanticizing Leadership: A Historical And Cultural Critique, Elisa Maureen Sandra Carlson Edd
Romanticizing Leadership: A Historical And Cultural Critique, Elisa Maureen Sandra Carlson Edd
Dissertations
Romanticism, a cultural and intellectual ideology of the late 18th and early 19th century, left a historical legacy of ecstasy and disaster upon subsequent generations. Manifestations of neo-romanticism are evident in many areas of contemporary culture. These modern manifestations, which include an infusion of the spiritual into everyday life, pantheistic adoration of nature, glorification of the self, fascination with the irrational, focus on the power of the imagination, subjugation of the individual to the common good, and apocalyptic hope for a new world, are influencing, theories and practices of leadership. This research set out to find out whether leadership studies …
Evaluating Forecasts Of Correlation Using Option Pricing, Michael S. Gibson, Brian H. Boyer
Evaluating Forecasts Of Correlation Using Option Pricing, Michael S. Gibson, Brian H. Boyer
Faculty Publications
A forecast of the correlation between two asset prices is required to price or hedge an option whose payoff depends on both asset prices or to measure the risk of a portfolio whose return depends on both asset prices. However, a number of factors make it difficult to evaluate forecasts of correlation. We develop a forecast evaluation methodology based on option pricing, extending a technique that Engle et al (1993) introduced to evaluate volatility forecasts. A forecast of the variance-covariance matrix of joint asset returns is used to generate a trading strategy for a package of simulated options. The most …
Joint Variance Ratio Tests Of The Martingale Hypothesis For Exchange Rates, Wai Mun Fong, Benedict Seng Kee Koh, Sam Ouliaris
Joint Variance Ratio Tests Of The Martingale Hypothesis For Exchange Rates, Wai Mun Fong, Benedict Seng Kee Koh, Sam Ouliaris
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
There is considerable interest in whether exchange rates behave like martingales. Liu and He tested the martingale hypothesis for exchange rates using the variance-ratio methodology of Lo and MacKinlay. They found that exchange rates have violated the martingale property since the inception of floating rates in 1973. Liu and He did not consider the joint implications of their tests, however. In this article, we reassess the martingale hypothesis for exchange rates using the joint tests developed by Hochberg and by Richardson and Smith. Contrary to the findings of Liu and He, the joint tests indicate that the martingale model worked …

The Information Content Of Fdi Announcements: Evidence From An Emerging Market, David K. Ding, Qian Sun
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines the stock return responses to the announcements of foreign direct investments (FDI) by Singaporean companies. A standard event study methodology is used to ascertain the abnormal returns around the announcement day (day 0). The study covers the period from 1989 to 1994 with a sample size of 70 events. The announcement effect is positive and significant around the announcement day. The average abnormal return is 0.4913 percent on day 0, and the two-day (days 0 and 1) cumulative abnormal return is 0.9642 percent. However, the abnormal return is unequally distributed across the sample firms. A cross-sectional analysis …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine if spatial intelligence contributes to a student's success in a computer science major or if mathematical-logical intelligence is sufficient data on which to base a prediction of success. The study was performed at a small university. The sample consisted of 15 computer science (CS) majors, enrolled in a computer science class, and 15 non-CS-majors, enrolled in a statistics class. Seven of the CS-majors were considered advanced and seven were considered less advanced. The independent measures were: the mathematics and the English scores from the ACT/SAT (CS-majors); a questionnaire to obtain personal information; …
The Relationship Between Public Sector Higher Education Level-Four Grievant Variables And Third-Party Discipline And Discharge Arbitration Case Determinations At The West Virginia Education And State Employees Grievance Board, Years 1985-1995., Ellen Jane Barnes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the relationship between grievant variables (case description, case issue, gender, seriousness of the case) and case determination (denied/granted). A disk copy of QA4 database years 1985 to 1995 was provided by the West Virginia Education and State Employees Grievance Board. The approximate 222 higher education synopses reports were read to locate the population. Fifty-five higher education discipline and discharge synopsis reports were isolated. Key words used by the Board assisted in isolating the population. The 55 higher education synopsis reports were printed out to compare to information on case decisions housed in the West Virginia Secretary of …
The Influence Of Decision Aids On User Behavior: Implications For Knowledge Acquisition And Inappropriate Reliance, Steven M. Glover, Douglas F. Prawitt, Brian C. Spilker
The Influence Of Decision Aids On User Behavior: Implications For Knowledge Acquisition And Inappropriate Reliance, Steven M. Glover, Douglas F. Prawitt, Brian C. Spilker
Faculty Publications
Structured decision aids are widely used in many organizational settings, and their influence on judgment consistency and accuracy have received considerable attention in the literature. While two benefits commonly associated with decision aid use are improved judgment and enhanced expertise development, relatively little attention has been directed toward the potential influence of decision aids on decision maker behavior. In particular, we argue that the use of structured aids may influence relatively inexperienced decision makers to approach aided tasks mechanistically, without becoming actively involved in the task or judgment. Such passive decision behavior may, in some situations, threaten gains in performance …

John S. Service And United States-China Relations, 1933--1945., Yufeng Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines John S. Service's China career as a Foreign Service officer from 1933-45, and the impact of his diplomatic activities and political reports on Sino-American relations during World War II. It explores his dual heritage as an American missionary son who was born and bred in China, revealing how this American-Chinese experience affected his personality and diplomatic approach that proved to be critical in his distinctive life and career. World War II presented China and the United States with an unparalleled opportunity for close cooperation and the two countries worked to build an effective alliance, but the promising …
Gas Mass Fractions And The Evolution Of Spiral Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Gas Mass Fractions And The Evolution Of Spiral Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
We show that the gas mass fraction of spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with luminosity and surface brightness. It is not correlated with linear size. Gas fraction varies with luminosity and surface brightness at the same rate, indicating evolution at fixed size. Dim galaxies are clearly less evolved than bright ones, having consumed only ∼1/2 of their gas. This resolves the gas consumption paradox, since there exist many galaxies with large gas reservoirs. These gas-rich galaxies must have formed the bulk of their stellar populations in the last half of a Hubble time. The existence of such immature galaxies at …

On Baptism And The Spirit: The Ethical Significance Of The Marks Of The Church, Vigen Guroian
On Baptism And The Spirit: The Ethical Significance Of The Marks Of The Church, Vigen Guroian
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
As the church rounds the close of its second millennium, Christians must recapture the ecclesial and sacramental character of Christian ethics. They must see clearly once more that their ethics belongs to the mystery of the incarnation and the redemptive mission of the church. They must see afresh that their ethics issues directly from their adoption through baptism as sons and daughters of God.
Indicated Silences In American Novels, Catherine Adamowicz
Indicated Silences In American Novels, Catherine Adamowicz
Open Access Dissertations
Studies have tended to focus on implied, not indicated, silences and/or to define the silence as the opposite and inferior condition of speech, reproducing and reinforcing the man/woman hierarchical binary.
This study, defining silence as the complement of speech, analyzes the significant of silences indicated by words and/or punctuation. Its purpose is to illustrate that the author's uses of silence reflect her subject position during a particular historical moment, that trends in uses evolve gradually, and that their direction can be predicted. The principle novels and authors used as examples are At Fault and The Awakening by Kate Chopin, …

A Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Adolescent Hiv-Risk Predictors, Michelle A. Lang
Open Access Dissertations
HIV-risk was assessed, and staged by the Transtheoretical Model, among 239 adolescents, ages 13-19 (mean age 15), with a 163-item self-administered questionnaire, supplemented with qualitative data from 28 focus groups. Thirteen psychometrically reliable scales were isolated and validated with 457 youth pooled from previous samples: factual, transmission, and perceived AIDS knowledge, misconceptions, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, homophobia, substance use and abuse, communication assertiveness, condom use assertiveness, and risk histories for self and partner(s). AIDS risk was defined by frequency of unprotected occasions and number of intercourse partners. Sexual activity was indicated by 54 percent of the sample. Young men reported significantly …
