Peace And The Press: Media Rules During U.N. Peacekeeping Operations, Jennifer Lee Jan 1997

Peace And The Press: Media Rules During U.N. Peacekeeping Operations, Jennifer Lee

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In recent years, U.N. peacekeeping operations have become an increasing focus of international military action and media coverage. While the military and the media have maintained a precarious balance in the United States between the military's objective of operational success and the media's call for uncensored reporting, the evolution and growing importance of U.N. peacekeeping offers new considerations to this balance. This Note examines the ability of the United Nations to affect the balance between the military and the media through the implementation of U.N. media rules during peacekeeping operations. This Note begins by reviewing the history of media coverage …

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister Jan 1997

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister

Journal Articles

The word "appropriate" is so wildly overused in American culture that, as with other vacuous words and phrases, a person learns to read right through it. "Appropriate" is verbal tofu. This Essay pauses instead of reading through, particularly to notice the instances in which "appropriate" and its negative counterpart are used to give the appearance of a moral or legal judgment.

"Appropriate," chosen to express a legal judgment, is not only vacuous; it is also irresponsible. It catches the legislator, judge, or administrator in the act of passing the buck, as the President did when he ordered the Justice Department …

The Chemical Weapons Convention: Strategic Implications For The United States, Frederick J. Vogel Mr. Jan 1997

The Chemical Weapons Convention: Strategic Implications For The United States, Frederick J. Vogel Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

On January 13, 1993, in Paris, 130 countries signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) to ban the entire class of chemical weapons. Many of those nations have since ratified it. In this country, debate continues on the strategic implications of the convention, as drafted, and whether it is in the U.S. national security interest. Once gain, that debate comes before the Senate for ratification consideration in 1997. Frederick Vogel explores the historical, moral, and legal aspects of chemical warfare, and the strategic implications of the convention, including operational, policy, constitutional, and industrial impact for the United States. He concludes that, …

Condominiums, Reform, And The Unit Ownership Act, Robert G. Natelson

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article assesses the Montana Unit Ownership Act (UOA), the condominium statute adopted by the Montana legislature in the 1960s. Part II sketches the nature and history of condominium ownership. Part III provides the history, organization, language, and essential purpose of UOA. Part IV offers a philosophy for reform and concludes that the Montana legislature should amend the UOA rather than replace it. Part V makes detailed recommendations for such reform.

Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey Jan 1997

Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In the study of medieval political philosophy the tendency has been to pay attention to thinkers who appear to have contributed to the birth of the modem. While the value in coming to understand how modem political thought developed is undeniable, this tendency is accompanied by an implicit, perhaps unintentional, devaluation of the study of that which did not contribute as obviously to modernity. In the history of the idea of the natural right scholars have distinguished between the objective and the subjective right, characterizing the subjective right as what lies at the heart of the classically modem and liberal. …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans Jan 1997

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Results of a primary meta-analysis indicated a significant main effect of the organizational behavior modification (O.B. Mod.) approach on task performance (d. = .51; a 17 percent increase) and a significant treatment-by-study interaction. To account for within-group heterogeneity of effect sizes, we conducted a two-level theory-driven moderator analysis by partitioning the sample of studies first into manufacturing and service groups and then into seven classes of reinforcement interventions. Results indicated a stronger average effect of O.B. Mod. in manufacturing organizations, moderation by the type of contingent interventions, and "pairwise" differences among average effect sizes in both organizational types. The practical …

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1997

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

I will consider Kant's claim that the categorical imperative (CI) is a synthetic a priori proposition. We know from the first Critique that such propositions are likely to be very important, but also difficult to justify. Kant says exactly the same things about the CI in the Grundlegung: the CI is difficult to justify2, but if we do not succeed in justifying it, morality may be a mere "phantom of the brain.',3 Though little has been written on this topic, a correct understanding of this claim is important to understanding Kant's views.

Review Of Robert Stefanotti, O.Carm, The Phoenix Of Rennes; The Life And Poetry Of John Of St. Samson 1571-1636, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen Jan 1997

Review Of Robert Stefanotti, O.Carm, The Phoenix Of Rennes; The Life And Poetry Of John Of St. Samson 1571-1636, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This monograph deals with the life and work of John of St. Samson. lay brother of the Carmelite Ancient Observance, reformer, mystic. author of spiritual treatises and poet. Curiously, this blind prolific Counter-Reformation era author is little known today even by his compatriots and is virtually unknown outside the French-speaking world.

In his analysis of the formal elements of Jean's work, Stefanotti stresses the mystic's preference for classical structures: in poetry, the sonnet; in music, the chanson. Among figures of speech, Jean was fond of "coupling, tripling, oxymoron, often employed to express paradox (p. 66, 70). The author points to …
