An Experimental Exposure Of An Eight-Year Old To Tagalog, Maria Pilar Morrision Jan 1997

An Experimental Exposure Of An Eight-Year Old To Tagalog, Maria Pilar Morrision

Honors Capstones

Language acquisition is a complex process that typically developing children seem to accomplish naturally at an early age. From the babbling of an infant to the multi-syllabic utterances of a toddler, language development occurs due the child's exposure and interaction to the sounds present in his or her environment. In an environment when two languages are spoken, a child has the opportunity to acquire two languages. In a case study conducted, an experimental exposure of an eight-year old male to the Tagalog language occurred. During a five-month period, the subject was taught vocabulary words of the Tagalog language and was …

Empowering The Next Generation: Girls Of The Maqattam Garbage Settlement, Marie Assaad, Judith Bruce

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of SEEDS explores the challenge of extending earning opportunities and access to valued social roles to young women in the garbage settlement of Maqattam, Egypt. This edition furthermore underscores the degree to which livelihood programs must confront the social circumstances—such as health, marriage, and cultural and family traditions—that play a major role in shaping girls' current and future economic prospects.

Introducing Sexuality Within Family Planning: The Experience Of Three Hiv/Std Prevention Projects From Latin America And The Caribbean, Julie Becker, Elizabeth Leitman, Mahmoud F. Fathalla

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité relates the experience of three family planning associations affiliated with the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region that have tried to incorporate an HIV/AIDS prevention strategy into their existing family planning programs and services. It examines how BEMFAM/Brazil, ASHONPLAFA/ Honduras, and FAMPLAN/Jamaica have made a transition toward a range of family planning services more focused on the clients themselves and more explicit in the treatment of sexual themes. In each of the three countries, the staff received special training that not only enabled them to provide information on HIV/AIDS, but also helped them adopt a broader …

Gender Differences In The Schooling Experiences Of Adolescents In Low-Income Countries: The Case Of Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Cynthia B. Lloyd Jan 1997

Gender Differences In The Schooling Experiences Of Adolescents In Low-Income Countries: The Case Of Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Cynthia B. Lloyd

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Little research on education in developing countries has focused on adolescent issues at the same time, despite the fact that a growing proportion of young people are spending some time in school during the phase of their lives between puberty and marriage, there is little research on schooling as a key dimension of the adolescent experience. This paper examines the school environment in Kenya and the potential ways it can help or hinder adolescents. We focus on gender differences with a view toward illuminating some of the factors that may present particular obstacles or opportunities for girls. The paper begins …

Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy, Michael P. Todaro Jan 1997

Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy, Michael P. Todaro

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

During the past three decades, the cities of the developing world in general, and of Africa in particular, have witnessed a remarkable and in many ways unprecedented demographic growth spurt. Despite some slowdown in rates of increase in the past few years as a result of falling wages, contracting social services, and changing demographic trends, contemporary urban areas remain the growth poles of economic progress and the lightning rods of political and social unrest. Nowhere is this dilemma more visible nor the resulting problems more intractable than in the crowded cities of sub-Saharan Africa, where projections of urban population growth …

The Personal Responsibility And Work Opportunity Act Of 1996: Poison Pills For Legal Immigrants, Meredith Barton, Deborah M. Chandler Jan 1997

The Personal Responsibility And Work Opportunity Act Of 1996: Poison Pills For Legal Immigrants, Meredith Barton, Deborah M. Chandler

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Former president Ronald Reagan's vision of America as this shining city ended Thursday, August 23, 1996, when President Bill Clinton signed his name to the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA, considered the most farreaching welfare reform package in history. Although the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the federal government will save over $57 billion between fiscal year 1997 and fiscal year 2002, this welfare reform package profoundly impacts immigrants, particularly legal immigrants. Overall 44% of federal savings (approximately $23.8 billion) stems from denying public assistance benefits to legal immigrants. This new welfare legislation directly …

The Equity Jurisdiction Of The Exchequer, William Hamilton Bryson Jan 1997

The Equity Jurisdiction Of The Exchequer, William Hamilton Bryson

Law Faculty Publications

The municipal Jaw of England is divided into common Jaw and equity. This is so because in the middle ages, the judges of the courts of common law (the Court of Common Pleas and the Court of King's Bench) believed that they could not expand the existing law in order to solve new problems. They thought that they were bound by the established Jaw as found in their own earlier judicial opinions. Furthermore, they felt that it was the function of Parliament to change the law; therefore, it would be an unconstitutional usurpation of the legislative power for the courts …

"Compelled By Conscientious Duty": Village Of Euclid V. Ambler Realty Co. As Romance, Michael Allan Wolf

Law Faculty Publications

In early 1851, Nathaniel Hawthorne penned an intriguing preface to his latest work--The House of the Seven Gables. Hawthorne drew a meaningful (if rarely appreciated) distinction:

When a writer calls his work a Romance, it need hardly be observed that he wishes to claim a certain latitude, both as to its fashion and material, which he would not have felt himself entitled to assume, had he professed to be writing a Novel. The latter form of composition is presumed to aim at a very minute fidelity, not merely to the possible, but to the probable and ordinary course of man's …

High-Dose Vitamin A Supplementation And Immune Response To Influenza A Viral Pneumonia In Balb/C Mice, Dongming Cui

All ETDs from UAB

To investigate the importance of high dose vitamin A in the immune response and regulatory function of T helper (Th) cells to influenza A viral pneumonia, BALB/c mice were fed a high dose vitamin A diet (250,000 IU/kg diet) or a control diet (4,000 IU/kg diet) and then were intranasally inoculated with influenza A virus under light anesthesia at 7 weeks of age. The effect of these diets on vitamin A status (serum and liver retinol concentrations), severity of disease (survival and weight loss), virus replication, the antibody response to infection (serum IgG and salivary IgA), and on cytokine production …

Coping With Partiality: Justice, The Rule Of Law, And The Role Of Lawyers, Randy E. Barnett Jan 1997

Coping With Partiality: Justice, The Rule Of Law, And The Role Of Lawyers, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Lawyers help ameliorate a particular instance of what the author calls the problem of interest--the partiality problem. For he believes that it falls to law professors to imbue in their students an understanding of the important role that lawyers play in society, if for no other reason than they will need some emotional armament from the slings and arrows of incessant lawyer jokes and worse. In explaining how the existence of lawyers helps address the problem of partiality, the author also explains how adherence to property rights, freedom of contract, and the rule of law--concepts long disparaged by law professors--help …

Introducing Provisional Damages For Personal Injuries In Canada, Paul Dufays Jan 1997

Introducing Provisional Damages For Personal Injuries In Canada, Paul Dufays

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Where a plaintiff in a personal injury action can prove at trial that she has suffered an injury that may be subject to future deterioration, Canadian common law courts make a speculative assessment of any potential future deterioration of the injury and decide damages once and for all. This provides finality for the parties, but potentially at the cost of accurate compensation for the plaintiff whose injuries later worsen. In 1985, the United Kingdom introduced a regime of reviewable provisional damages for personal injury, which allows review of damage awards after trial, improving compensation for the plaintiff without creating indefinite …

Yamaha Motor Corp. V. Calhoun: An Examination Of Jurisidiction, Choice-Of-Laws, And Federal Interests In Maritme Law, B.J. Haeck Jan 1997

Yamaha Motor Corp. V. Calhoun: An Examination Of Jurisidiction, Choice-Of-Laws, And Federal Interests In Maritme Law, B.J. Haeck

Washington Law Review

In Yamaha Motor Corp. v. Calhoun, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that state remedies were still available for non-seamen killed inside of a state's three-mile territorial sea, despite the existence of a general maritime remedy at federal law. This Note argues that the Court failed to consider its traditional tests when confronted with this choice between state and federal maritime law. In so doing, it erred in finding that state law was applicable. The Court's decision also created a conflict between the traditional standard of significant federal interest required in order to confer federal admiralty jurisdiction to tort plaintiffs …
