Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Government of Kenya is committed to providing equal education opportunities to all of its citizens. As a result, there has been rapid development in education since independence to ensure that as many children as possible enroll in schools and complete their studies. This study was carried out primarily to get a holistic picture of the school environment for adolescents and other relevant factors that might interfere with the whole learning/teaching process. Special attention was paid to the education of girls and the factors that might lead to their dropping out of school. The study was conducted jointly by the …
New Narratives Of Southern Manhood: Race, Masculinity, And Closure In Ernest Gaines's Fiction, Suzanne W. Jones
New Narratives Of Southern Manhood: Race, Masculinity, And Closure In Ernest Gaines's Fiction, Suzanne W. Jones
English Faculty Publications
In his fiction Ernest Gaines is interested not only in deconstructing stereotypes but also in presenting new models of southern manhood, for both black and white men. While Gaines has employed traditional definitions of manhood in his fiction, the vision he presents in his most recent novel, A Lesson Before Dying, is similar to that of Cooper Thompson and other contemporary theorists of masculinity, who believe that young men must learn 'traditional masculinity is life threatening' and that being men in a modern world means accepting their vulnerability, expressing a range of emotions, asking for help and support, learning non-violent …
A Model For Cultural Analysis In The Frame Of Leadership, David Nelson
A Model For Cultural Analysis In The Frame Of Leadership, David Nelson
Honors Theses
Leadership in the business world is coming under scrutiny now more than ever. The foundations of the business world are crumbling and new perspectives are diversifying the context of almost every business. Even the inside of business' are changing. New people are getting the chance to make changes in the companies, and their changes are altering how things are done. Business can be analyzed through the frame of culture. An analysis of the culture of a company will bring to light the way the company is structured (the formal structure) and the way the company works in day to day …

My Perfect Little Doll, Tilsik (Noriega) Hagan
HIM 1990-2015
My Perfect Little Doll tells the story of a fourteen year old girl, Jenny, who lives with her adopted parents and has a fascination with dolls. Her father is a troubled man who suffers from violent mood swings due to a work-related injury. He blames the world for his ailments. Jobless and home-stricken, Jenny's father is a frustrated individual who has built up anger and resentment over the years. Without proper medication, his problem becomes severe. His mood swings lead to abusive behavior toward shy Jenny, who constantly blames herself for her father's abusive ways.
Through a flashback, we learn …

The Oral Communication Competence Dilemma: Are We Communicating Competently About Speech Communication?, Cathy A. Fleuriet
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article discusses the oral communication competence problem among students in public schools, colleges and universities in the U.S. In response to concerned administrators who question the value of the study of speech communication, communication specialists are providing definitions and assessment of oral communication competence in order to solidify the speech communication discipline's role in ensuring competence among students in higher education. Many of the schools fulfilling the mandate through English/Language Arts courses included initial statements in their documents explaining that the requirement is being met through communication courses. A major problem in monitoring the oral communication competency mandate, such …

The cDNA for casein kinase 1 (CK1) of Plasmodium falciparum was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in bacteria, The single major open reading frame of the 1,2-kilobase pair cDNA coded for a 324-amino acid polypeptide of similar to 37 kDa, the predicted sequence of which showed strong identity with known CK1 isoforms, The purified recombinant enzyme exhibited properties characteristic of CK1, such as inhibition by CK1-7, the ability to phosphorylate a highly specific peptide substrate, and a strong preference for ATP over GTP, A casein kinase activity, partially purified from soluble extracts of P. falciparum by affinity chromatography through CK1-7 columns …
Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis
Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Boundary-layer perturbation theory problems are inherently singular. However, it is known that discretizing the problem by introducing a lattice may convert such problems into regular perturbation problems. The singular nature of boundary-layer problems is then relegated to and hidden in the continuum limit, the subtle limit in which the lattice spacing tends to zero. If the lattice is introduced cavalierly, then extrapolating to zero lattice spacing gives a sequence of extrapolants that at first approaches the correct limit and then veers off, thereby revealing the asymptotic nature of such problems. However, discretizing the problem following the procedures described here yields …
Low Frequency Raman Gain Measurements Using Chirped Pulses, Arthur Dogar, David J. Hagan
Low Frequency Raman Gain Measurements Using Chirped Pulses, Arthur Dogar, David J. Hagan
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Two-beam coupling, attributed to Raman gain, is observed in dielectrics using chirped femtosecond pulses. A time resolved pump-probe geometry is used to vary the frequency difference between pulses in the terahertz frequency band. Stimulated Raman scattering couples the pulses transferring energy from the higher to the lower frequency beam, resulting in a dispersion shaped curve as a function of the temporal delay, dependent on the product of the pump and probe irradiances. The observed signal gives the Raman gain in SiO2 and PbF2 for detunings up to 10 THz (approximately 300 cm(-1)) using mm-thick samples. This method may also be …

Efficient Wavelength Shifting Over The Erbium Amplifier Bandwidth Via Cascaded Second Order Processes In Lithium Niobate Waveguides, Katia Gallo, Gaetano Assanto, George I. Stegeman
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We investigate two schemes for wavelength conversion based on the cascading of two successive second order processes in a quasi-phase-matched lithium niobate channel waveguide. Efficient conversion over the full erbium amplifier bandwidth is possible with a single multi-hundred milliwatt pump laser operating around 1.55 mu m.
Intracavity Gain And Absorption Dynamics Of Hybrid Modelocked Semiconductor Lasers Using Multiple Quantum Well Saturable Absorbers, S. Gee, R. Coffie, P. J. Delfyett, G. Alphonse, J. Connolly
Intracavity Gain And Absorption Dynamics Of Hybrid Modelocked Semiconductor Lasers Using Multiple Quantum Well Saturable Absorbers, S. Gee, R. Coffie, P. J. Delfyett, G. Alphonse, J. Connolly
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Time resolved intracavity gain, saturable absorption dynamics, intracavity intensity pulse profiles, and their corresponding spectrograms, were measured in an external cavity hybrid mode-locked semiconductor diode laser. These measurements were performed to obtain fundamental information of the mode-locking dynamics and to determine their role in the pulse shaping and chirping dynamics. The results of these experiments show that the integrating nonlinearity associated with gain depletion, coupled with group velocity dispersion, leads to asymmetric intensity pulse profiles with predominantly cubic temporal phase, while saturable absorption coupled with group velocity dispersion tends to linearize the chirp. Exploitation of these dynamics may allow researchers …

Exclusion Statistics For Fractional Quantum Hall States On A Sphere, S. B. Isakov, G. S. Canright, M. D. Johnson
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We discuss exclusion statistics parameters for quasiholes and quasielectrons excited above the fractional quantum Hall states near nu=p/(2np+1). We derive the diagonal statistics parameters from the (''unprojected'') composite fermion (CF) picture. We propose values for the off-diagonal (mutual) statistics parameters as a simple modification of those obtained from the unprojected CF picture, by analyzing finite system numerical spectra in the spherical geometry.

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Autoionizing Resonances Between The P-3 And D-1 Thresholds In Atomic Chlorine, J. Jiménez-Mier, S. J. Schaphorst, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We present a measurement of the partial and differential photoionization cross sections for production of the fine-structure states of Cl+ P-3(J) in the region of the (3)p(41)Dnl (l = 0,2) autoionizing resonances. All series of resonances show distinctive behavior for the J=2 to J=1 cross-section ratio. The angular distribution parameter beta was also measured for the two principal ionic states (J = 1,2). The behavior of beta is very similar for both J=1,2 channels, except at the LS-forbidden nd(2)S resonance series, where the J=2 channel shows a pronounced dip that indicates an important contribution from the parity-unfavored epsilon d photoelectron …

Spatial Soliton Robustness Against Spatially Anisotropic Phase Perturbations, Jin U. Kang, C. J. Hamilton, J. S. Aitchison, G. I. Stegeman
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We demonstrate experimentally that spatial solitons in AlGaAs waveguides are resilient against spatially anisotropic perturbations in their phase caused by introducing a wedge in the soliton propagation path. In agreement with numerical simulations, the solitons maintained their initial beam shape and width, independent of the fraction of the soliton beam intercepted by the wedge.

Model For The Quasineutral Region Capacitance Of P/N Junction Devices, J. J. Liou, J. Xue, X. Cao, W. Zhou
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The capacitance associated with free-carrier charge storage in the quasineutral region is a primary factor in limiting the switching speed of pin junction devices. This capacitance has been conventionally modeled using assumptions such as low-level injection, nondegeneracy, complete impurity ionization, and no space-charge region thickness modulation. These assumptions can give rise to a large error in device modeling, particularly for modern devices with very small geometry and high bias conditions. In this article, a comprehensive quasineutral region capacitance model including relevant device physics is developed. Comparisons between the present and conventional models are made, and the effects of using these …
