Debunking: A Role For The Practicing Sociologist, Harris Chaiklin
Debunking: A Role For The Practicing Sociologist, Harris Chaiklin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Individual sociologists have been effective in solving organizational problems. They have been spectacularly unsuccessful in solving persistent social problems such as poverty. These ultimate troubles may never be solved but they must always be worked with. Sociological ideas cannot be the only knowledge system used in working with social difficulties. No reductionistic system has ever been successful. Creating the conditions which will even improve any deleterious social behavior requires a wider perspective and more resources than the sociologist, as sociologist, can muster. Practicing sociologists can make their greatest contribution to ameliorating major social malfunctions by putting increased emphasis on their …

The Epa's Proposed Phase-Iii Expansion Of The Toxic Release Inventory (Tri) Reporting Requirements: Everything And The Kitchen Sink, Barbara Ann Clay
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Comment examines the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) proposed expansion of the Toxic Release Inventory (TRl) reporting requirements under section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) of 1986. The TRI program allows the EPA to provide public information pertaining to the release of chemicals by certain industrial facilities into the environment. In October of 1996, the EPA published its intention to expand reporting requirements, including the collection of material accounting (MA) data elements. MA data tracks the lifecycle of chemicals from raw materials to end product; therefore, industry officials oppose MA reporting as unjustifiably extensive. Environmental …

Foreign Private Investment In Nigeria - 1995, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn
Economic and Financial Review
The net flow of foreign private investment into the Nigerian economy increased substantitally by more than twelve-folds from "M1, 907. 2 million in 1994 to N48, 677. 0 million in 1995, reflecting the stable macro-economic conditions during the period. All the components of foreign investment flows contributed to the increase with the contribution of unremitted profit accounting for the highest. Analyses of the investment flows showed that companies of Western Europe accounted for 78. 7 per cent of the total net inflow mainly through firms in the mining and quarrying sector. The survey revealed that the cumulative level of foreign …
Mobilizing Rural Savings In Papua New Guinea: Myths, Realities, And Needed Policy Reform (N.A. Fernando, The Journal Of Institute Of Development Economics, Tokyo, Japan, Vol. Xxix, No. 1, March, 1992), M. Abdulkadir
Economic and Financial Review
A review of the article "Mobilizing Rural Savings in Papua New Guinea: Myths, Realities and Needed Policy Reforms" is imperative considering the efforts of the Federal Government and monetary authorities, especially the Central Bank of Nigeria to mobilize rural savings in Nigeria. This is evidenced by the establishment of the Nigerian Agricultural and Cooperative Bank ( 1973), the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme ( 1977), the Central Bank of Nigeria Rural Banking Programme (1977), the Peoples Bank (1990) and the Community Bank (1990) nationwide.

First Graders Solving Problems, Mary H. Burke
First Graders Solving Problems, Mary H. Burke
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
First graders become good problem solvers when given the opportunity to practice problem solving skills. It is necessary for such practice to take place in a risk-free environment that treats errors as valuable learning experiences rather than something to always avoid. This thesis integrates academic subject matter, school life interactions, and out of school experiences into the first graders' development of critical thinking skills and strategies necessary for them to become good problem solvers. The thesis explains in several different academic subject areas the implementation of critical and creative thinking pedagogy essential for the development of a sound foundation for …

Essays On Monkey: A Classic Chinese Novel, Isabelle Ping-I Mao
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Monkey is one of the masterpieces in the genre of the classic Chinese novel. It has been immensely popular with the general reading public of China since the sixteenth century. Abridged and translated into English in 1943 by Arthur Waley, it has made its way onto the college campuses in the United States, and has been well appreciated. There is a recent complete and unabridged translation by Anthony Yu, with the title Journey to the West. In this thesis, I offer a series of critical essays on Monkey. The first essay locates the work in the genre. It traces its …

Two elements A and B in a ring R determine a generalized derivation deltaA,B on R by setting δA,B(X) = AX - XA for any X in R. We characterize when the product δC,DδA,B is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring R is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space epsilon, and when R is a C*-algebra U. We use the se characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of δA,B.

A Framework For Assessing The Rationality Of Judgments In Carcinogenicity Hazard Identification, Douglas J. Crawford-Brown, Kenneth G. Brown
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Arguing that guidelines for identifying carcinogens now lack a philosophically rigorous framework, the authors present an alternative that draws clear attention to the process of reasoning towards judgments of carcinogenicity.

Evaluation/Reflection
The Pioneer RESA's Environmental Action Learn and Serve Program (EALSP) was designed to enhance middle school math and science programs. This enhancement was accomplished through the application of classroom instruction to real-life situations and the involvement of students in active community service. Begun in the 1994-1995 school year, EALSP has had three highly successful years of providing meaningful service learning projects, extensive curriculum development, and essential professional development activities for 25 schools in 14 systems, 50 teachers, and over 2,000 students.

We report the classification of 21 new extreme-ultraviolet sources from the recent catalog of Lampton et al. The optical spectra presented identify the objects as 14 active late-type stars (including two double active stars and a possible T Tauri star), three white dwarfs, and six active galactic nuclei (a Seyfert galaxy, the BL Lac object 1ES 1028+511 [=EUVE J1031+508], and four quasi-stellar objects). We have detected Ca II absorption lines in the BL Lac object and measured its redshift. Two of the white dwarfs are unusually massive (M > 1.1 M☉). Our sample of late-type stars includes five …

In recent years, it has become apparent that minerals can trigger alterations in gene expression by initiating signaling events upstream of gene transactivation. These cascades may be initiated at the cell surface after interaction of minerals with the plasma membrane either through receptorlike mechanisms or integrins. Alternatively, signaling pathways may be stimulated by active oxygen species generated both during phagocytosis of minerals and by redox reactions on the mineral surface. At least two signaling cascades linked to activation of transcription factors, i.e., DNA-binding proteins involved in modulating gene expression and DNA replication, are stimulated after exposure of lung cells to …
On The Suprema Distribution Of Gaussian Processes With Stationary Increment And Drift, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff
On The Suprema Distribution Of Gaussian Processes With Stationary Increment And Drift, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report we study the suprema distribution of a class of Gaussian processes having stationary increments and negative drift using key results from ~Txtrerne Value Theory. We focus on deriving an asymptotic upper bound to the tail of the suprema distribution of such processes. Our bound is valid for both discrete- and continuous-time processes. VVe discuss the importance of the bound, its applicability to queueing problems, and show numerical examples to illustrate its performance.

New Bounds And Approximations Using Extreme Value Theory For The Queue Length Distribution In High-Speed Networks, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Statistical multiplexing is very important in high-speed ATM type of networks, since it allows applications to efficiently share valuable network resources. However, statistical multiplexing can also lead to congestion which must be effectively controlled in order to provide users satisfactory quality of service. In this report we study a fundamental measure of network congestion, the tail of the steady state queue length distribution at an ATM multiplexer. In particular, we focus on the case when the aggregate traffic to the multiplexer can be characterized by a Gaussian process. In our approach, an ATM multiplexer is modeled by a fluid queue …

A Comparative Survey Of Job Prospects For The Period 1991-1996, Matthew C. Bell, Adam S. Goodie
Psychology
How discouraging is the job market for young scientists these days? It seems that most scientists who have tried to land a job in· recent years can tell you, unambiguously, "Very." Are prospects bleaker for some experimental psychologists than for others? To us, it subjectively seemed so. In an effort to answer this question more rigorously. we analyzed issues of the APS Observer Employment Bulletin, published by the American Psychological Society, from 1991-1996. Admittedly, the number of classified ads for jobs in a specific category is only one index of the job prospects for that category, but it is a …
Successful Adaptation Of Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union To Project Renewal Neighborhoods: The Influential Factors, Haya Itzhaky
Successful Adaptation Of Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union To Project Renewal Neighborhoods: The Influential Factors, Haya Itzhaky
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Migration has been an international phenomenon for centuries. The widespread trend toward migration in recent years has resulted in efforts to examine the factors involved in the adaptation of immigrants to life in the host country. This study examines the factors that effect immigrant adaptation and integration in urban neighborhoods in Israel that are undergoing a process of rehabilitation. Adaptation is defined by the variables: contact with neighbors, participation in community activities, sense of belonging to the community and well-being. These mediator and dependent variables were found to be directly effected by home and host related variables. These variables were …
