Hydrocarbon Ions In The Ionosphere Of Titan, Jane L. Fox, Roger V. Yelle Sep 1997

Hydrocarbon Ions In The Ionosphere Of Titan, Jane L. Fox, Roger V. Yelle

Physics Faculty Publications

We have constructed a new model of the ionosphere of Titan that includes 67 species and 626 reactions. Although N2+ is the major ion produced over most of the ionosphere, the ionization flows to ions whose parent neutrals have lower ionization potentials and to ions formed from species with large proton affinities. In contrast to other models, which have predicted that HCNH+ should be the major ion, our calculations suggest that the major ions at and below the ion peak are hydrocarbon ions, and H, C, and N-containing ions. Our predicted peak electron density for a solar …

Pond Secrets: Reflections For Thought And Virtue, Franco Carnelli Sep 1997

Pond Secrets: Reflections For Thought And Virtue, Franco Carnelli

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Pond secrets is an original play designed to create a context for motivating children to learn and practice critical thinking in its strongest sense through reflective dialogue and improvisational drama. The story's design, content, and suggested methodology are theoretically consistent with Brain-based learning theory, which asserts that memorable learning occurs when children can integrate concepts, emotions, and values in a meaningful context and environment. Using a mythical setting and features of classical literature, Pond secrets invites children to join the animals of Pond as they gather to examine their thinking and affirm the meaning of friendship, citizenship, and justice. Not …

Portland State Magazine

PSU’s alumni magazine, published 2-3 times a year. In this issue: Dan Bernstine brings to Portland State a reputation for building consensus and endowments; as a member of Clinton’s Bioethics Advisory Commission, a PSU researcher helped form national policy on cloning; a grant from the Turkish government has put PSU in some elite company; a new place, a new life—PSU students are making it easier for recent refugees; the university received its first $1 million gift from an alum—and four months later it happened again; and more.

The Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Is Expressed Primarily In Glial Cells In The Neonatal Rat Brain, Ana Guadaño-Ferraz, Maria Jesus Obregón, Donald L. St. Germain, Juan Bernal Sep 1997

The Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Is Expressed Primarily In Glial Cells In The Neonatal Rat Brain, Ana Guadaño-Ferraz, Maria Jesus Obregón, Donald L. St. Germain, Juan Bernal

Dartmouth Scholarship

Thyroid hormone plays an essential role in mammalian brain maturation and function, in large part by regulating the expression of specific neuronal genes. In this tissue, the type 2 deiodinase (D2) appears to be essential for providing adequate levels of the active thyroid hormone 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) during the developmental period. We have studied the regional and cellular localization of D2 mRNA in the brain of 15-day-old neonatal rats. D2 is expressed in the cerebral cortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, caudate, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cerebellum and was absent from the white matter. At the cellular level, D2 is expressed predominantly, if not …

New Learning Paradigms For Catholic Education, Angela Ann Zukowski Sep 1997

New Learning Paradigms For Catholic Education, Angela Ann Zukowski

Journal of Catholic Education

A paradigm shift is needed in Catholic education for the 21st century. The new paradigm needs to communicate that the purpose of Catholic education is not to transfer knowledge but to create environments and experiences that bring students to discover for themselves, to make students members of communities of learners that make discoveries and solve problems. The New Frontiers for Catholic Schools project supports educators in making technology a vital part of the future of Catholic education.

An Examination Of Risk And Resource Sharing Behavior Between Ltl Trucking Companies And Warehouse Providers, Joe B. Hanna, David J. Bloomberg Sep 1997

An Examination Of Risk And Resource Sharing Behavior Between Ltl Trucking Companies And Warehouse Providers, Joe B. Hanna, David J. Bloomberg

Journal of Transportation Management

Increased demand for third-party logistics providers who can offer multiple services to their customers has encouraged many entities to explore innovative ways to expand service offerings. The current research examines Class I LTL motor carriers who have expanded their services to include warehousing. While there are several ways to achieve a service expansion into warehousing, the current research focuses on firms who have elected to expand by creating a strategic alliance type relationship with an external warehouse provider. The research examines carriers attitudes about risk and resource sharing in the alliance relationship. The results indicate that carriers are moderately receptive …

Conservation Compliance Credit For Winter Wheat Fall Biomass Production And Implications For Grain Yield, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm Sep 1997

Conservation Compliance Credit For Winter Wheat Fall Biomass Production And Implications For Grain Yield, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Producers participating in federal farm and conservation programs must reduce potential erodibility below certain thresholds on lands classified as highly erodible. The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) will credit producer s in Colorado for the quantity of green winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) biomass at the beginning of the winter period towards compliance in reducing erosion. Unfortunately, few data exist on fall winter wheat biomass production and fall production varies widely based on many site-specific factors at planting and during the fall, and can be expensive to document. To address these problems, a crop simulation model called SHOOTGRO …

Recommendations For Elimination Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer In Michigan, K. L. Cool, James Haveman, Dan Wyant Sep 1997

Recommendations For Elimination Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer In Michigan, K. L. Cool, James Haveman, Dan Wyant

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

A significant infection rate of bovine TB in the deer population of the northeastern lower peninsula poses a potential risk to several important values including public health, United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) TB-free accreditation for Michigan cattle, wildlife health, wildlife-related recreation and tourism and economic stability in several sectors. A risk assessment study by the U.S. D.A. Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (Fort Collins, CO) predicted that if no changes were made in the management of the affected free-ranging deer population, the TB prevalence (compared to the current prevalence of 2.3%). Although the current annual risk of TB …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Earned Value Management System Criteria, John R. Cole Jr., Judson M. Fussell Sep 1997

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Earned Value Management System Criteria, John R. Cole Jr., Judson M. Fussell

Theses and Dissertations

In December 1996, the Cost/Schedule Control Systems Criteria (C/SCSC) was officially replaced by the Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) criteria. The switch to EVMS, coupled with current acquisition reform changes, have left many wondering what the effects of these changes will be. This thesis defines the costs and benefits of the old C/SCSC, and then compares them. Additionally, this thesis discusses the changes accompanying the switch to EVMS and the effect on the costs and benefits. The marginal costs of C/SCSC are defined as the difference between the costs of a C/SCSC compliant system and a contractors normal management control …

Modeling Intelligent Control Of Distributed Cooperative Inferencing, Edward M. Williams Sep 1997

Modeling Intelligent Control Of Distributed Cooperative Inferencing, Edward M. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to harness different problem-solving methods together into a cooperative system has the potential for significantly improving the performance of systems for solving NP-hard problems. The need exists for an intelligent controller that is able to effectively combine radically different problem-solving techniques with anytime and anywhere properties into a distributed cooperative environment. This controller requires models of the component algorithms in conjunction with feedback from those algorithms during run-time to manage a dynamic combination of tasks effectively. This research develops a domain-independent method for creating these models as well as a model for the controller itself. These models provide …
