The Design And Modeling Of Input And Output Modules For An Atm Network Switch, Darin Murphy Oct 1997

The Design And Modeling Of Input And Output Modules For An Atm Network Switch, Darin Murphy

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to design, model, and simulate both an input and an output module for an ATM network switch. These devices are used to interface an ATM switch with the physical protocol that is transporting data along the actual transmission medium. The I/O modules have been designed specifically to interface with the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) protocol. This thesis studies the ATM protocol and examines the issues involved with designing an ATM I/O module chipset. A model of the design was then implemented in both C++ and \TTDL. These models were simulated in order to verify …

Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson Oct 1997

Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the effects of children's marital status on the frequency of contact they have with their mothers. As American society ages and marital disruption remains high, it is important to determine if there are differences in the relationships adult children have with their aging parents. A secondary analysis was conducted on data collected in 1986 for the General Social Survey. Two hypotheses were created from theory:

(1) From dependency and obligation theories, it was predicted that maritally disrupted adult children would report having greater contact with their mothers than married adult children.

(2) From status and resource adjustment …

A Player For Adaptive Mpeg Video Streaming Over The Internet, Jonathan Walpole, Rainer Koster, Shanwei Cen, Crispin Cowan, David Maier, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, David Steere, Liujin Yu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time, streaming, Internet video and audio player. The player has a number of advanced features including dynamic adaptation to changes in available bandwidth, latency and latency variation; a multi-dimensional media scaling capability driven by user-specified quality of service (QoS) requirements; and support for complex content comprising multiple synchronized video and audio streams. The player was developed as part of the QUASAR t project at Oregon Graduate Institute, is freely available, and serves as a testbed for research in adaptive resource management and QoS control.

The future mission of the Air Force will be diverse and complex. Advanced technology will play an increasingly prominent role; a smaller force must accomplish more. To support this mission, our acquisition corps must be intellectually capable, well educated and trained. Focused graduate education will be essential to sustain this effort.

Subsystem Variables Associated With Positive Foster Mother-Foster Child Relationships, Meg Sandow Oct 1997

Subsystem Variables Associated With Positive Foster Mother-Foster Child Relationships, Meg Sandow

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Many researchers have explored variables that appear to influence a foster child's placement, and both researchers and theorists have noted the need for an overarching understanding of the variables that may affect a foster child's care and progress. This study examined four interlinking subsystems of foster care: the foster child, the family of origin, the foster parent, and the social worker. Data regarding relevant variables for each of these subsystems were analyzed by means of canonical correlations, factor analyses, a multiple regression, and zero-order correlations. Participants in the study were 42 foster children from the Chesapeake and Suffolk Departments of …

The Effects Of Task Partitioning And Computer Skill Level On Operator Engagement And Performance In An Adaptive Biocybernetic Environment, Todd Michael Eischeid Oct 1997

The Effects Of Task Partitioning And Computer Skill Level On Operator Engagement And Performance In An Adaptive Biocybernetic Environment, Todd Michael Eischeid

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined task partitioning in an adaptive environment, utilizing the cybernetic closed-loop system of Pope et al. (1995). In that study, participants either performed a tracking task (manual condition) or monitored the tracking task (automatic condition). Changes in task mode were driven by an engagement index derived from the participant's EEG and operated under either positive or negative feedback conditions. One goal of the present study was to examine participant performance under a wider range of tracking conditions. Specifically, the task was partitioned into 3 modes: a manual mode, a partitioned mode, and an automatic mode. A second …

Opportunities For Cooperative Extension And Local Communities In The Information Age, Daniel J. Tennessen, Steven Pontell, Van Romine, Suzanne W. Motheral Oct 1997

Opportunities For Cooperative Extension And Local Communities In The Information Age, Daniel J. Tennessen, Steven Pontell, Van Romine, Suzanne W. Motheral

Journal of Extension

The Cooperative Extension System is well-suited to enable communities to participate on the Internet and compete in the global market. The Internet will enable people to work, learn, and play at any time and in any location. However, accessing this new technology by some communities can be inhibited by lack of economic and human resources. This paper describes Cooperative Extension's potential role in enabling communities to access the Internet by seeking alliances among local individuals, industry, and institutions to employ the Internet as an educational and work medium. Benefits for Cooperative Extension and for rural communities are detailed.

If It Sells Soap It Can Help Sell Innovations: A Useful Lesson From Marketing, Thomas J. Bierma, Frank L. Waterstraat, Grear Kimmel, Paul Nowak Jr

Journal of Extension

Promoting innovations is an act of marketing. Carefully conceived marketing plans can greatly enhance success. Understanding that different market segments have different product and information needs is a basic concept in commercial marketing. "Innovativeness" and "Stage in the adoption process" are two useful ways of segmenting a market. The Innovativeness-Stages Matrix, combined with an understanding of the different needs of market segments, provides a powerful tool for focusing marketing efforts without extensive marketing research or resources.

Building Bridges - An Intergenerational Program, Nina Chen Oct 1997

Building Bridges - An Intergenerational Program, Nina Chen

Journal of Extension

Long-distance grandparents and grandchildren are common and may have resulted in growing tensions between young and old. Building Bridges provides opportunities for children to learn and interact with seniors as well as for seniors to share their talents and enjoy being with children for meaningful experiences. Education, friendships, and caring are main components. Without funding support, 23 agencies, schools, nursing homes, 10 volunteers, 900 children, and 520 frail and home bound seniors were reached. Evaluation showed that the program has made a significant impact on the children and seniors.

Predicting The Future: Have You Considered Using The Delphi Methodology?, Barbara Ludwig

Journal of Extension

Frequently business, governmental agencies and organizations are faced with the problem of predicting or forecasting future events and relationships in order to make appropriate and reasonable plans or changes. Several methods exist for forecasting, one of which is called the Delphi technique. This approach has not been frequently used by Extension practitioners, but has potential as a tool for consensus building. The Tools for the Trade article provides an overview of the process and suggestions for implementation.

Pooling Resources In The Information Age, Daniel J. Tennessen, Steven Pontell, Van Romine, Suzanne W. Motheral

Journal of Extension

Many communities may appear to lack human and financial resources required to enable access to the Internet. CE offices are well suited to bring local stakeholders and community members together to share knowledge, assess needs, and learn about Internet opportunities. Tioga County Cooperative Extension of New York established an Internet consortium to understand and meet community Internet needs. Some basic issues and consortium initiatives are detailed.
