Attributions For Spousal Violence, Linda L. Ratcliff Oct 1997

Attributions For Spousal Violence, Linda L. Ratcliff

Student Work

The literature on spousal violence suggests that abusive men, their female victims, and others in society often fail to blame abusers for their violent behavior. This failure perpetuates spousal violence because it allows abusers to continue being abusive without being held responsible for their actions. This study analyzed the attributions of male and female university students concerning written scenarios portraying moderate levels of spousal violence to determine whether observers tend to explain the violence using internal or external attributions. Male participants in the study reported a very low tendency, if any, to engage in spousal violence, while the female participants …

The Market For Loyalties And The Uses Of Comparative Media Law, Monroe E. Price Oct 1997

The Market For Loyalties And The Uses Of Comparative Media Law, Monroe E. Price

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article posits that media regulation is a tool used by governments to maintain power structures through the control of the "market for loyalties." This concept suggests that laws are employed to manage information and cultural narratives, ensuring that those in power retain their influence by shaping public allegiance. The author illustrates this through examples from various countries, demonstrating how each nation tailors its media laws to fit its unique political and cultural contexts.

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

How Effective A Tool Is Student Community Service, Martha Naomi Alt Oct 1997

How Effective A Tool Is Student Community Service, Martha Naomi Alt

Service Learning, General

Despite the popular appeal among the public, educators, parents, and even students for community service, there is surprisingly little firm evidence that students who engage in service learn more, develop in different ways, or learn different skills than those who do not. What are the implications for policy, further research, and school practice?

History Of Indian Broadcasting Reform, Sevanti Ninan Oct 1997

History Of Indian Broadcasting Reform, Sevanti Ninan

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the historical evolution of broadcasting reform in India, highlighting the tension between state control and the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech under Article 19. It traces the development from colonial-era laws like the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 to modern legislative and judicial efforts to balance public interest, cultural preservation, and technological advancements. The analysis underscores the recurring themes of autonomy for state media, competition from private and foreign broadcasters, and the need for regulatory frameworks to address these challenges.

Doordarshan, Public Service Broadcasting And The Impact Of Globalization: A Short History, Nikhil Sinha Oct 1997

Doordarshan, Public Service Broadcasting And The Impact Of Globalization: A Short History, Nikhil Sinha

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the transformation of India's public service broadcasting system, particularly Doordarshan, in the context of globalization and economic liberalization. It argues that the shift from a state-dominated to a market-oriented economy has led to increased commercialization of broadcasting, threatening the traditional public service mission of Doordarshan. While structural reforms like the implementation of Prasar Bharati aim to grant greater autonomy, the pressures of commercial competition and political influence continue to challenge the balance between public interest and market demands.

A British Perspective On Structuring The Indian Broadcasting Regulatory Authority, Tony Prosser Oct 1997

A British Perspective On Structuring The Indian Broadcasting Regulatory Authority, Tony Prosser

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the structure and operation of the UK's Independent Television Commission (ITC) as a model for the Indian Broadcasting Regulatory Authority. It argues that while the ITC has improved regulatory practices through greater transparency and accountability, its experience highlights key challenges, such as balancing public interest concerns with market forces, managing media concentration, and ensuring fair licensing procedures. The article concludes that the establishment of an independent regulatory authority is crucial but warns against replicating the UK's approach without considering its shortcomings.

The Broadcasting Of Sport And Major Events Under The Broadcasting Bill, 1997, Scott Bouvier Oct 1997

The Broadcasting Of Sport And Major Events Under The Broadcasting Bill, 1997, Scott Bouvier

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the legal and social implications of broadcasting major sporting events, focusing on the debate over antisiphoning laws that prevent exclusive rights for pay television. It highlights the importance of ensuring free access to these events for the public, particularly in countries like India, where such events hold significant cultural and social value. The analysis critiques India's proposed antisiphoning provisions in the Broadcasting Bill and suggests that policymakers should consider approaches from countries like Australia and the UK, which have successfully balanced public access with economic interests.

Babette's Feast: A Religious Film, Wendy M. Wright Oct 1997

Babette's Feast: A Religious Film, Wendy M. Wright

Journal of Religion & Film

This paper explores the various ways in which Babette's Feast might be called a religious film. First, yet perhaps least significantly, the film's subject matter is overtly religious. It treats of a late nineteenth century Danish Christian sect, focusing attention on the tale of two pious women whose life experiences are defined solely by their religious beliefs. Second, the film explores reality through the foundational myth of Christianity and through literary and visual symbols that derive from that faith tradition. Especially it contrasts two modalities of Christian apprehension: one which sees religiosity as primarily a matter of moral living, demeaning …

Using 'Homemade' Documentary Video In Religious Studies, Scott C. Alexander Oct 1997

Using 'Homemade' Documentary Video In Religious Studies, Scott C. Alexander

Journal of Religion & Film

On the whole, the lesson I learned from making Abraham's Children, and the one I would like to pass on, is a fairly simple one. If an instructor can imagine a video that would enhance his or her religious studies teaching in specific ways, but cannot seem to find a strong candidate available in the current market, that instructor may want to consider producing a "homemade" video with the primary goal of improving his or her own students' education, and the secondary aim of making your project available for purchase to colleagues who may be facing similar pedagogical challenges. …

Professional Responsibility: 1997 Survey Of Florida Law, Timothy P. Chinaris, Elizabeth Clark Tarbert

Law Faculty Scholarship

Professional responsibility law in Florida continued to expand in 1997. Case law, rules, and ethics opinions amplified and, in some areas, extended the duties that lawyers assume as officers of the judicial branch of government. This article examines professional responsibility decisions that are likely to affect the relationships that lawyers have with clients, former clients, judges, third parties, and The Florida Bar. Part II looks at developments affecting the most important relationship that lawyers establish and operate within: the relationship between lawyer and client. Part III reviews developments of significance to the lawyer's relationship to the court and the judicial …

Linking Transport Infrastructure Investments And Economic Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ambe J. Njoh Oct 1997

Linking Transport Infrastructure Investments And Economic Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ambe J. Njoh

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The study explores the link between investments in transportation infrastructure, operationalized in terms of road density, and economic development, defined in terms of gross domestic product per capita (GDP/Cap), in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The findings support the hypothesis of a positive association between the two variables. The association is stronger for paved, than for all, roads in general. Furthermore, a negative but statistically insignificant relationship is observed between unpaved roads and economic development. Thus, economic development is a function more of quality, than quantity of roads in SSA. Therefore, a more judicious use of the scarce resource of sub-Saharan African …

Trends In Indian Media And Prospects For Broadcasting Reform, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh Oct 1997

Trends In Indian Media And Prospects For Broadcasting Reform, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that India's media market, despite immense latent demand driven by its large population and growing economy, is stifled by government-imposed monopolies and restrictive policies. While technological advancements and private sector growth have created opportunities for competition, the government's reluctance to liberalize media regulations and its focus on maintaining control over content and distribution hinder the market's potential. The article critiques the proposed Broadcasting Bill for prioritizing political and economic interests over free expression and market efficiency, urging a shift toward policies that foster competition, innovation, and decentralized media infrastructure.
