The Globalization Of Public Health: Emerging Infectious Diseases And International Relations, David Fidler Oct 1997

The Globalization Of Public Health: Emerging Infectious Diseases And International Relations, David Fidler

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

In this article, Professor Fidler explains how the processes of

globalization have altered traditional distinctions between national and

international public health. Professor Fidler begins the article by

familiarizing the reader with globalization, reminding the reader that

globalization refers to the various factors that infringe upon a sovereign

state's ability to control what occurs in its territory. Next, the article defines

and discusses emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and examines the

contributions made by globalization to the emergence and reemergence of

EIDs. The article then develops a "pathology of the globalization of public

health ", which helps the reader to understand better …

Decentering Whiteness, Peter Mclaren Oct 1997

Decentering Whiteness, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"I wish to make two claims in this article. One is that multicultural education has largely refused to acknowledge how imperialism, colonialism, and the transnational circulation of capitalism influences the ways in which many oppressed minority groups cognitively map their paradigm of democracy in the United States. The other claim is that the present focus on diversity in multicultural education is often misguided because the struggle for ethnic diversity makes progressive political sense only if it can be accompanied by a sustained analysis of the cultural logics of white supremacy; While these two claims mutually inform each other, it is …

Effects Of Auditory Oral Patterns As An Intervention For Expressive Language With Students With Disabilities, Scott Riley Swinehart

Masters Theses

The effects of using Auditory Oral Patterns to remediate expressive language in students with learning disabilities w as examined in a cross categorical classroom. Ten students with special education needs were in the study. Six of the students were labeled a s learning disabled, three of the students were labeled as educable mentally impaired, one student was labeled as emotionally impaired, and one student was labeled as autistically impaired. Four of the students in the study also had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Quantitative results of the study showed an increase in average words per sentence in oral expressive language for …

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews Oct 1997

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The current economic situation in Massachusetts, like the nation, is healthy. Employment, income, and output growth are strong, and inflation is low. Over the last 12 months ending in July 1997, non-agricultural payroll employment (referred to below as “employment”) grew 2.3 percent. At this rate, the peak employment of December 1988 will be surpassed by the end of this winter. The unemployment rate has been hovering at or below 4 percent for several months, a rate not experienced since 1989. Monthly initial unemployment insurance claims averaged 28,500 over the last 12 months, down from an average 31,400 a year earlier, …

The Interaction Between Cytoplasmic Dynein And Dynactin Is Required For Fast Axonal Transport, Clare M. Waterman-Storer, Sher B. Karki, Sergei A. Kunetsov, Joel S. Tabb, Dieter G. Weiss, George M. Langford, Erika L.F. Holzbaur Oct 1997

The Interaction Between Cytoplasmic Dynein And Dynactin Is Required For Fast Axonal Transport, Clare M. Waterman-Storer, Sher B. Karki, Sergei A. Kunetsov, Joel S. Tabb, Dieter G. Weiss, George M. Langford, Erika L.F. Holzbaur

Biology - All Scholarship

Fast axonal transport is characterized by the bidirectional, microtubule-based movement of membranous organelles. Cytoplasmic dynein is necessary but not sufficient for retrograde transport directed from the synapse to the cell body. Dynactin is a heteromultimeric protein complex, enriched in neurons, that binds to both microtubules and cytoplasmic dynein. To determine whether dynactin is required for retrograde axonal transport, we examined the effects of anti-dynactin antibodies on organelle transport in extruded axoplasm. Treatment of axoplasm with antibodies to the p150(Glued) subunit of dynactin resulted in a significant decrease in the velocity of microtubule-based organelle transport, with many organelles bound along microtubules. …

A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab Oct 1997

A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We present a recursive construction for difference sets which unifies the Hadamard, McFarland, and Spence parameter families and deals with all abelian groups known to contain such difference sets. The construction yields a new family of difference sets with parameters (v, k, λ,n)=(22d+4(22d+2−1)/3, 22d+1(22d+3+1)/3, 22d+1(22d+1+1)/3, 24d+2) for d⩾0. The construction establishes that a McFarland difference set exists in an abelian group of order 22 …

An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Selected Nonpharmacologic Pain Interventions In Infants, Cindy Smith Greenberg Dnsc, Ms, Rn, Cpnp Oct 1997

An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Selected Nonpharmacologic Pain Interventions In Infants, Cindy Smith Greenberg Dnsc, Ms, Rn, Cpnp

Dissertations

Infants subjected to painful stimuli respond with deleterious physiologic and metabolic effects, behavioral changes, and potentially long term effects on painful stimuli processing and response. There are few studies that address effective pain interventions for infants, particularly those interventions that staff nurses can implement independently. Interventions must be identified and their effectiveness must be validated for this vulnerable population. Pharmacologic management of pain may cause deleterious side effects and needs to be ordered by physicians or nurse practitioners. Nonpharmacologic methods to manage pain can usually be implemented by staff nurses independently. This study evaluated the efficacy of two nonpharmacologic pain …

Water As A Matter For Human Emotions, Ho-Jeong Jeong Oct 1997

Water As A Matter For Human Emotions, Ho-Jeong Jeong

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the plastic image of water as the metaphor for specific human emotions. Given its fluid nature, water itself does not have its own particular form of existence. However, influenced by the external environment, water creates various forms that suggest specific human emotion. These forms are created by forces of nature. I intend to create sculpture of the motion of water that evokes human emotion. The format for the idea is sculpture that consists of structural, repetitive and organized modules. I exploit the repetitive and sequential use of forms that provide an immediate …
