An Evaluation Of Farmer Applications Of Deer Damage Controls, Peter Fritzell Jr., Glenn Dudderar, R. Ben Peyton Oct 1997

An Evaluation Of Farmer Applications Of Deer Damage Controls, Peter Fritzell Jr., Glenn Dudderar, R. Ben Peyton

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

Damage to agricultural crops caused by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) continues to be a significant concern of farmers in Michigan and elsewhere in the United States. Policy changes that promise to reduce deer numbers may be long in coming, but better application of available damage control techniques may be an immediate alternative for farmers awaiting relief. Conversations with farmers, extension agents, and wildlife professionals suggest that some damage control techniques are underutilized by Michigan farmers, whereas other techniques are applied with little success despite promising field trials. We investigated producers’ practices to identify common weaknesses in how deer …

Self-Selected Journal Writing In The Kindergarten Classroom: Five Conditions That Foster Literacy Development, M. Jean Bouas, Pat Thompson, Nancy Farlow Oct 1997

Self-Selected Journal Writing In The Kindergarten Classroom: Five Conditions That Foster Literacy Development, M. Jean Bouas, Pat Thompson, Nancy Farlow

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"What can kindergarten children write?" This question came from Doris, a middle school language arts teacher when she was told about Nancy's kindergarten classroom. Nancy had a regularly scheduled self selected journal writing time. The children were allowed to choose their messages and forms of writing. Children scribbled, drew, wrote nonphonetic letter strings, and demonstrated phonetic and conventional spelling. These are all forms of spelling exhibited by emerging writers according to Sulzby, Teale, and Kamberelis, 1989.

A Journey Within A Journey: The Journey Of Three Computer Learners On A Journey Down Under, Valerie G. Hall, Brenda P. Dixey, Susan L. Nierstheimer, David G. O'Brien

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This is the story of the journey of three literacy teachers learning about classroom use of computers and developing a computer-driven unit on Australian animals. As frightened as we were of technology, we wanted our students to have positive experiences with computers. We also wanted the computer to be a useful tool for our students rather than a meaningless rote activity. We wanted our students to use a variety of literacy materials, participate in many reading and writing responses, and interact in groups as they used the computer as one medium for learning. In this article we describe our learning …

Toys, Tinsel, And Trade: The Outlook For The 1991 Holiday Shopping Season, John Austin, Lisa Darlington Oct 1997

Toys, Tinsel, And Trade: The Outlook For The 1991 Holiday Shopping Season, John Austin, Lisa Darlington

Business in Nebraska

Scrooge's pessimism notwithstanding, the holiday shopping season is once again upon us and with it comes the perennial question: What is the outlook for retailers this season? While the ghosts of Dickens' tale had clear views of what was, what is, and what is to come, we can claim no such clarity of vision. We can, however, examine a set of factors thought to correlate with holiday shopping trends and compare them to a forecast based on historical trends, in an attempt to shed some light on the coming season,

Based on historical trends, December 1997 other net taxable retail …

Does The Going Concern Explanatory Paragraph Have Information Content As Perceived By Bank Loan Officers?, Rafik Zakaria Elias Oct 1997

Does The Going Concern Explanatory Paragraph Have Information Content As Perceived By Bank Loan Officers?, Rafik Zakaria Elias

Doctoral Dissertations

Reporting going concern uncertainty has always been a controversial issue for standard-setters, auditors and users of the financial statements. Current standards require the auditor to include an explanatory paragraph in an unqualified audit opinion to report going concern uncertainty. This research investigated the information content attributed to this additional paragraph as viewed by users.

Two groups of commercial loan officers were presented with the same information for an actual case company exhibiting going concern uncertainty. One group received a modified report and a footnote disclosure of the going concern situation while the other group received an unqualified report and the …

Utilizing A Product Rejuvenation Framework To Investigate University Aviation Association Members' Perceptions Of The Cessna 172 As A Single Engine Trainer, George A. Wrigley Iii Oct 1997

Utilizing A Product Rejuvenation Framework To Investigate University Aviation Association Members' Perceptions Of The Cessna 172 As A Single Engine Trainer, George A. Wrigley Iii

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research was to utilize a product rejuvenation framework to investigate if sufficient market demand exists for Cessna in relaunching the 172 in the collegiate trainer market. The Collegiate Aviation Guide, a publication of the University Aviation Association listing UAA members and their respective aviation offerings, was used to establish the initial population for the research. The UAA members located within the 50 United States which 1) had a flight training program, and 2) owned and operated their own fleet of aircraft, represented the survey population. A total of 64 schools met the established criteria, with 55 …

The Mass Media And Stakeholders’ Beliefs About Suburban Wildlife, Cynthia A. Loker, James Shanahan, Daniel J. Decker Oct 1997

The Mass Media And Stakeholders’ Beliefs About Suburban Wildlife, Cynthia A. Loker, James Shanahan, Daniel J. Decker

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

This study examines how suburban audiences obtain information about 3 species in New York State (whitetail deer [Odocoileus virginianus], beaver [Castor Canadensis], and Canada goose [Branta canadensis]). Respondents in 3 suburban areas were surveyed on concerns and interests about a particular species in their area. Respondents also were surveyed about preferred sources for species information and actual source use. Finally, respondents were surveyed about general media use. “Uses-and-gratifications” theory was used to characterize respondents’ information behavior for species information. Specific recommendations for communication planning are offered.

The Press And Citizen Participation: A Content Analysis, Lisa Pelstring, James Shanahan, Ben Perry Oct 1997

The Press And Citizen Participation: A Content Analysis, Lisa Pelstring, James Shanahan, Ben Perry

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

We conducted a content analysis of regional New York State newspapers to assess media coverage of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) deer management program. The goal of this analysis was to ascertain media depiction of DEC’s deer management program during the 1985-97 time period. Specifically, this research examines how deer management issues were portrayed both prior to and after implementation of a DEC public participation program (the Citizen Task Force [CTF] process) to determine if deer management issues received more favorable coverage after CTFs were implemented.
