Effectiveness Of Dropout Prevention Models As Perceived By High School Principals And High School Guidance Counselors In Florida, Joyce Tropea Bacon Jan 1997

Effectiveness Of Dropout Prevention Models As Perceived By High School Principals And High School Guidance Counselors In Florida, Joyce Tropea Bacon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study investigated the perceptions of high school principals and guidance counselors, in the State of Florida, of nine dropout prevention models and their effectiveness. Six of the models exemplify the most frequently used programs throughout Florida: (a) the transitional ninth grade class, (b) computer-assisted instruction, (c) teaching high school competency test strategies, (d) educational alternative centers/schools of choice, (e) vocational technical centers, and (f) youth services programs. The three newer program models, cities in schools, block scheduling and telecommunications abeyance programs, have been in use for less than three years in the State of Florida but literature identifies them …

Effects Of Academic Advisor Attire On Community College Student Satisfaction With Academic Advising, Rebecca Celeste Beck Jan 1997

Effects Of Academic Advisor Attire On Community College Student Satisfaction With Academic Advising, Rebecca Celeste Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The major purpose of this study was to determine if the attire of academic advisors would significantly affect students' satisfaction with their academic advisors. Academic advisors wore three types of attire: professional, casual, and a special uniform. The major concern was to determine if the student's first impression, as influenced by attire, of the academic advisor was significant in terms of satisfaction with the advising process. Data collected from 363 community college students were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Based upon the statistical analyses, the researcher failed to reject all the null hypotheses. The attire of the academic advisors …

The participants of the study were 33 children, ages 4 to 12, and their parents. Two weeks following the child's surgery, the parents assessed the child's postsurgical adjustment by completing the Post Hospital Behavior Questionnaire (PHBQ). Data was analyzed by t-test …

Effects Of Socioeconomic, Political, And Organizational Factors On The Implementation Of Community Policing: A Conceptual Framework For An Innovative Policy, Terry Anne Anderson Jan 1997

Effects Of Socioeconomic, Political, And Organizational Factors On The Implementation Of Community Policing: A Conceptual Framework For An Innovative Policy, Terry Anne Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Community policing has emerged as the philosophical foundation for a new paradigm in American policing calling for police and community residents to work jointly in identifying and solving neighborhood problems. As an example of an innovative public policy, community policing implementation may be affected by a number of factors. This dissertation synthesized what is known about innovation in public policy and community policing. It examined how certain socioeconomic, political, and organizational factors affect and predict innovativeness in policy formulation and explored their effects on its implementation. It has implications for law enforcement agencies that have already adopted community policing and …

The purpose of this study is to empirically test a number of hypotheses related to unit initial public offerings. Specifically, the following areas are examined: (1) the underpricing unit IPOs relative to a subset of NASDAQ straight-equity IPOs; (2) the impact of the size and value of the overallotment option on the degree of underpricing and the underwriter percentage spread; (3) the impact of the size and value of the underwriter warrants on the degree of underpricing and the underwriter; (4) certification effects of auditor type and bank and bridge loans; (5) the distribution function of the underwriter; (6) the …

Estimation Of Information-Theoretics-Based Delay-Bounds In Atm Networks, Liqun. Wei Jan 1997

Estimation Of Information-Theoretics-Based Delay-Bounds In Atm Networks, Liqun. Wei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis addresses a method of deducing the statistical upper and lower bounds associated with the cell-transfer delay variations (CDVs) encountered by the cells transmitted in the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks due to cell losses. This study focuses on: (1) Estimating CDV arising from multiplexing/switching for both constant bit rate and variable bit rate services via simulations. (2) Deducing an information-theoretics based new technique to get an insight of the combined BER-induced and multiplexing/switching-induced CDVs in ATM networks. Algorithms on the CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in …

Extending Use Cases And Interaction Diagrams To Develop Distributed System Architecture Requirements, John C. Hawkins Jan 1997

Extending Use Cases And Interaction Diagrams To Develop Distributed System Architecture Requirements, John C. Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Current object-oriented development methodologies do not introduce distributed system architectural aspects early enough in the system development cycle. A development partitioning scheme that includes the system level, in addition to the problem and application levels, will encourage analysis that includes elicitation of non-functional system requirements. These requirements include response time with respect to system communication load, fault tolerance, safety, security, and real-time deadlines, among others. They can be documented with an extended form of Jacobson's use cases. Where use cases describe how a system will work from a user's point of view, extended use cases add the capability to describe …

Exploratory Study Of Biofeedback In Reducing Pain After Thoracic Surgery, Laurie R. Angel Jan 1997

Exploratory Study Of Biofeedback In Reducing Pain After Thoracic Surgery, Laurie R. Angel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study is a pilot concerning the relationship between acute pain management and biofeedback training. The population studied included patients from a local community hospital undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The study applied theories of the mind/body connection and stress frameworks for exploring the correlation between patients' hand temperatures and their reported levels of pain pre-operatively and post-operatively. Study findings indicated that there was significant within-subjects effect in hand temperature after biofeedback treatment across three points in time. But the study also found no difference between-subjects in hand temperature after biofeedback treatment across three points in time. Therefore, the …

From "Sincere Gay Woman" To "Busty, Fem Biwf": A Longitudinal Test Of The Generalizations About "Lesbians", Social Class, Feminisms And Butch And Fem, Sara L. Crawley Jan 1997

From "Sincere Gay Woman" To "Busty, Fem Biwf": A Longitudinal Test Of The Generalizations About "Lesbians", Social Class, Feminisms And Butch And Fem, Sara L. Crawley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Academic and non-academic authors argue that middle-class lesbians present themselves as butch or fem less than working-class lesbians. Theorists also have argued that butch and fem were discoursed by 1970s feminist stigma but are reemerging in post-feminist decades. By analyzing "women seeking women (WSW)" personal ads, this study provides a longitudinal, quantitative analysis of the validity of these assumptions. The results suggest that middle-class lesbians were less likely to present themselves as butch or fem than working-class lesbians. Also, butch and fem were found to be much more prevalent in the 1990s than in the 1970s or 80s. Generational cohorts …

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty Jan 1997

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since the late nineteenth century, scholars and historians have attributed the growth of a sensational press in Britain to long-term societal changes such as the rise of capitalism. What has been ignored, however, is the importance of individual initiative, mainly that of W. T. Stead of the Pall Mall Gazette. During the Sudan Crisis of 1883-1885, Stead introduced a new type of journalism to England that combined typographical innovations, such as maps and striking headlines, with a lively literary style. At the root of this new type of reporting were Stead's deep-felt convictions about spreading Christianity, extending the empire, and …

Generating Formal Models From Uml Class Diagrams, Malcolm Keki Shroff Jan 1997

Generating Formal Models From Uml Class Diagrams, Malcolm Keki Shroff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The rich structuring mechanisms, and abstract modeling constructs available in most graphical object-oriented modeling methods (OOMs) facilitate the creation of abstract, visually-appealing, highly-structured graphical models. On the other hand, lack of formal semantics for the modeling notation can severely limit the utility of OOMs. Formal specification techniques (FSTs) support the creation of precise and analyzable specifications, but they can be tedious to create and difficult to read, especially by system developers not trained in formal methods. The complementary strengths of OOMs and FSTs suggest that their integration can result in techniques that can be used to create precise and analyzable …

The purpose of this study was to examine teacher perceptions about pertinent factors affecting the successful teaching of the National Standards for Music. Subjects were music specialists and fourth grade generalists from public elementary schools in consenting school districts from throughout the State of Florida. The two groups were administered a survey to glean opinions of the feasibility of implementing each of the nine National Standards for Music by rating seven repeated professional and resource items (contact time, resources, assistance, ability, training, interest, responsibility, and level of assistance). The summed ratings of the dependent variables (consisting of the seven professional …

Hands Off "Our" Black Men: Black Women's Discourse On Black Man/White Woman Relationships, Ronald Jules Antonin Jan 1997

Hands Off "Our" Black Men: Black Women's Discourse On Black Man/White Woman Relationships, Ronald Jules Antonin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

If black men and women, and some white women were--to some extent--successful in forming a coalition to fight some sociopolitical battles much as anti-slavery, civil rights, women's movement, etc., it appears that romantic interracial relationships--particularly between black men and white women--are on the verge of undermining this necessary coalition to "cross the bridge to the twenty-first century." Judging from three perspectives: (1) historical sexual-relations between blacks and whites; (2) the black female audience's attitude toward black man and white woman romance; and (3) media (movies and literature) portrayals of black women's reactions to black men who date or marry white …

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman Jan 1997

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis presents the results of an empirical investigation of the applicability of genetic algorithms to a real-world problem in software reliability--the fault-prone module identification problem. The solution developed is an effective hybrid of genetic algorithms and neural networks. This approach (ENNs) was found to be superior, in terms of time, effort, and confidence in the optimality of results, to the common practice of searching manually for the best-performing net. Comparisons were made to discriminant analysis. On fault-prone, not-fault-prone, and overall classification, the lower error proportions for ENNs were found to be statistically significant. The robustness of ENNs follows from …

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri Jan 1997

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ocean ambient noise has been studied extensively in the past, and several models have been developed to predict its level and to characterize it in different ocean environments. However, most of these studies have been motivated by the need to reduce the negative effect of the ambient noise on measurements. Recently, several studies have used the ambient noise to obtain information about the ocean floor and to achieve passive target detection. This dissertation describes the development of an Ambient Noise Sonar (ANS) which can be used to measure ambient noise directivity to obtain information about the environment. The system was …

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk Jan 1997

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Major financial newspapers and financial news programs in the United States, such as the Wall Street Journal and the Financial News Network, often mention macroeconomic data in attempting to predict a potential adjustment in the level of stock market prices. The presentation ofthis data is particularly prevalent when the level of stock market prices is in record territory. However, many believe that there exists no relationship, correlation or causal relationship between the level of stock market prices and macroeconomic indicators, especially in technologically advanced nations. The purpose ofthis paper is to test the efficiency of three international stock markets. If …

Software Metrics Collection: Two New Research Tools, Sylviane G. Jordan Jan 1997

Software Metrics Collection: Two New Research Tools, Sylviane G. Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Collecting software metrics manually could be a tedious, inaccurate, and subjective task. Two new tools were developed to automate this process in a rapid, accurate, and objective way. The first tool, the Metrics Analyzer, evaluates 19 metrics at the function level, from complete or partial systems written in C. The second tool, the Call Graph Generator, does not assess a metric directly, but generates a call graph based on a complete or partial system written in C. The call graph is used as an input to another tool (not considered here) that measures the coupling of a module, such as …

The Secret Lives Of The Four Horsemen, Barry Cushman Jan 1997

The Secret Lives Of The Four Horsemen, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

"Outlined against red velvet drapery on the first Monday of October, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction, and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Van Devanter, McReynolds, Sutherland, and Butler. They formed the crest of the reactionary cyclone before which yet another progressive statute was swept over the precipice yesterday morning as a packed courtroom of spectators peered up at the bewildering panorama spread across the mahogany bench above." Or so Grantland Rice might have written, had he been a legal realist. For more than two generations scholars …

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister Jan 1997

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister

Journal Articles

The word "appropriate" is so wildly overused in American culture that, as with other vacuous words and phrases, a person learns to read right through it. "Appropriate" is verbal tofu. This Essay pauses instead of reading through, particularly to notice the instances in which "appropriate" and its negative counterpart are used to give the appearance of a moral or legal judgment.

"Appropriate," chosen to express a legal judgment, is not only vacuous; it is also irresponsible. It catches the legislator, judge, or administrator in the act of passing the buck, as the President did when he ordered the Justice Department …

A Twentieth Amendment Parable, John Copeland Nagle Jan 1997

A Twentieth Amendment Parable, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

The twentieth amendment receives virtually no attention in modern American constitutional law. Adopted in 1933, the primary purpose of the amendment was to eliminate lame-duck Congresses. The proponents of the amendment argued that lame-ducks were subject to nefarious influences and that allowing lame-duck legislation contradicted the voice of the people in the most recent election. But the text of the twentieth amendment simply moved the date on which the newly elected President and Congress took office from March to January, and does not expressly prohibit lame-duck legislation. The framers of the amendment could not conceive of Congress meeting during the …
