Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss Jan 1997

Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss

School of Psychology Theses

The aim of this programme of research was to investigate the differences between individuals in their psychological adjustment to perceived abnormalities of appearance. The first phase of the research was to refine and validate a measure of distress and dysfunction associated with having an appearance which is different from normal. Over 500 patients in plastic reconstructive surgery units were recruited as participants in a nationwide multi-centre trial. The resulting measure, the Derriford Appearance Scale 24r was shown to have good psychometric properties, and was used as a criterion measure of adjustment. A series of clinical interviews were conducted with contrasting …

A Study Exploring The Nature And Effect Of Interactions In Play Between Carers And Children With Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome And Typical Development, Jan Payne Jan 1997

A Study Exploring The Nature And Effect Of Interactions In Play Between Carers And Children With Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome And Typical Development, Jan Payne

School of Psychology Theses

An observational study with an emergent design of two parts, consisting of quantitative and qualitative analysis, looked at communicative interactions between carers and children. The children were drawn from three groups: Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome and typically developing. The first part of the study utilised a secondary data set of observations of play sessions of carers with children who have Cerebral Palsy and carers of children with typical development. A continuous observational data-logging method of four verbal and six non-verbal behaviours was piloted and used with this data, and also used with observations of a further research group of carers …

Enhanced Sediment Transport Near Seawalls And Reflective Beaches, Jon Miles Jan 1997

Enhanced Sediment Transport Near Seawalls And Reflective Beaches, Jon Miles

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis describes results of a field experiment to examine the effect of wave reflection on suspended sediment transport in front of a seawall. Two instrument rigs were set up on the beach at Teignmouth, South Devon, U.K., in June 1995. One rig (the seawall rig) was attached to a protruding section of seawall, positioning the instruments 1.2m seaward of the wall. The other rig (the beach rig) acted as a control and was positioned 135m downcoast where the seawall is set back so that conditions were those of a natural beach. At each rig high frequency measurements of wave …

Ecophysiology Of Neomysis Integer (Mysidacea: Peracarida), Stephen Derek Roast Jan 1997

Ecophysiology Of Neomysis Integer (Mysidacea: Peracarida), Stephen Derek Roast

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Neomysis integer (Leach) (Peracarida: Mysidacea) is a common component of the hyperbenthos of Western European estuaries, and this study focused on the ecophysiology and ecotoxicology of this mysid. Behavioural and physiological responses of N. integer to physical and chemical variables (current velocity, substratum type, temperature and salinity) were measured in the laboratory to gain better understanding of how this mysid maintains position in estuaries. Current velocity was the most important factor controlling position maintenance, and N. integer had a maximum swimming speed of c. 9cm sˉ¹. Position maintenance was facilitated by a muddy substratum and was not affected by salinity. …

Building And Implementing A Program Review For Gifted Education In An Urban School District, Anna Mae Bagby

Graduate Research Papers

In June of 1996, the Board of Education of the Waterloo School District, which is considered an urban school district, requested that all externally funded programs be reviewed. This included the Expanded Learning Program (ELP). The emphasis was to determine strengths and needs of ELP and the needs of gifted students in the regular classroom. A committee was formed, composed of ELP staff and parents of identified gifted students, who developed surveys which were sent to all ELP parents (K-12), all identified students, (K-12), and selected classroom teachers and specialists (K-8). Data were compiled and summarized according to (1) major …

Technology Leadership In Education, J. David Louk Jan 1997

Technology Leadership In Education, J. David Louk

Graduate Research Papers

This paper examines the area of technology leadership in education in grades K-12. More specifically this paper addresses the importance of sound technology leadership and the various elements necessary for effective leadership in this area. Technology leadership can come from a variety of sources. One of the most common sources for district technology leadership comes from technology/ computer coordinators. More progressive school districts (K-12) are even establishing technology departments/ offices. The literature also strongly suggests that the technology leadership for a district needs to be derived from multiple levels possibly including: school board members, administration, teachers, and community members (Durost, …

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus Jan 1997

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus

Graduate Research Papers

Early childhood curriculum implementation is not yet well represented in the literature pertaining to multiple intelligences. For purposes of this project, the literature pertaining to early childhood classrooms where the seven multiple intelligences were implemented was reviewed, and a preschool implementing the seven multiple intelligences has been written. This curriculum makes a difference in how the authors' lesson plans are designed and classroom activities are chosen. The resulting curriculum may also make a difference in how other early childhood educators set up their overall curriculum, and provides an easy-to-follow resource guide of potential use when planning individual units and activities.

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer Jan 1997

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer

Graduate Research Papers

Instructional hypennedia programs seem to define the current trend in today's educational institutions. These multimedia programs, most often found on CD-Roms (compact disks, which can be read, but not written to), make use of the computer to coordinate and present text, graphics, audio, animation, and video within a single document. They are classified as "hype1media" because of the way in which the various elements can be accessed. Rather than being limited to a linear presentation, in which each element is dispensed in a predetermined sequence to all users, Yang and Moore (1995) define hypermedia as a "non-linear association of information …

Peer Relations Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Joan Elizabeth Licari Jan 1997

Peer Relations Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Joan Elizabeth Licari

Graduate Research Papers

This paper's main focus is on the peer relations of children with ADHD. Many interventions are used with children who have ADHD. One of the most widely used intervention is medication. The drug that is most associated with ADHD is methylphenidate or Ritalin. Medication, which can reduce some problematic behaviors associated with ADHD, has not been found to be very beneficial in peer relations.

Children who have ADHD are at risk for later psychopathology (mental disorders), among other problems, and thus early interventions are critical to reduce the onset of later pathologies.

This paper is intended to provide an overview …

Summing Up: Questions And Answers On The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, David W. Hafemeister Jan 1997

Summing Up: Questions And Answers On The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

My experiences with the ratification of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the Threshold Test Ban Treaty, and the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty have led me to conclude that presenting technical issues early in the process greatly reduces their politicization during the ratification end game. This chapter summarizes the important issues that will be raised during the debate on ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. It uses a compact question and answer format to cover the following topics: I. Nuclear Proliferation, II. Nuclear Arms Control, III. Warhead Reliability and Yield for National Security, IV. Warhead Safety, V. Verification, …
