Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen
Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen
Quidditas
Even without external corroborating evidence, we may infer from her works that the nun Hrotswitha (Hrotsvit in Saxon) lived in Saxony during the second half of the tenth century. Because she seems to have had considerable freedom of movement and expression for a woman at that time, writing about worldly affairs evidently with some personal knowledge of them, she was most likely a canoness, that is, not fully cloistered. She must have visited the courts of the Saxon kings, probably more than once, since she chronicles their exploits and composes poetry of a type briefly popularized by a scholar in …
Demythifying Multicultural Education: Social Semiotics As A Tool Of Critical Pedagogy, Stephanie Urso Spina
Demythifying Multicultural Education: Social Semiotics As A Tool Of Critical Pedagogy, Stephanie Urso Spina
Publications and Research
This article discusses the assumptions and curricular implications of a social semiotic approach to education. Semiotics refers to the meaning we make with language as well as other objects. events, and actions. Social semiotics emphasizes the social, cultural, historic, and political contexts that shape that meaning. A social semiotic approach to education can help teachers and teacher educators to deconstruct the reproduction of class, politicize the ideology of colonialism, and overcome the inequities they engender. By providing a way to challenge selectively reproduced cultural politics, social semiotics provides a way to reconstruct and democratize schools and society.
Subjunctive Lawyering And Other Clinical Extern Paradigms, Kate E. Bloch
Subjunctive Lawyering And Other Clinical Extern Paradigms, Kate E. Bloch
Clinical Law Review
Every decision in legal practice contains an ethics component. Legal education must, therefore, prepare prospective lawyers to recognize and resolve these ethical issues in a principled manner. Because law students who participate in live-client clinical programs become both observers and direct actors in the ethics of legal decisions, the clinical experience provides an intensely motivating and uniquely concrete opportunity to teach and learn legal ethics. Enhancing student perception and understanding of legal ethics represents a nearly universal goal of clinical teachers. The clinician's emphasis, the student's pre-existing ethics consciousness, and the immersion in the immediacy of live lawyering prompt students …
Testing The Grades: Evaluating Grading Models In Clinical Legal Education, Stacy L. Brustin, David F. Chavkin
Testing The Grades: Evaluating Grading Models In Clinical Legal Education, Stacy L. Brustin, David F. Chavkin
Clinical Law Review
In 1994, the JOURNAL OF LEGAL EDUCATION published a survey of grading practices at law schools across the United States. That survey revealed a mix of grading approaches for clinical programs. 31 percent of all clinical courses used a fully-graded model; 33 percent graded students on a pass/fail basis; and 16 percent utilized both graded and pass/fail models. The article did not attempt to evaluate qualitatively the effectiveness of the various grading models. At about the same time that this article was published, clinicians teaching in Columbus Community Legal Services (CCLS) of The Catholic University of America were reconsidering the …
Striving To Teach "Justice, Fairness, And Morality", Jane Harris Aiken
Striving To Teach "Justice, Fairness, And Morality", Jane Harris Aiken
Clinical Law Review
By far the most challenging value is the injunction to strive to promote justice, fairness, and morality. Arguably, the first value, the provision of competent representation, can be fostered by effective skills training. The third value, striving to improve the profession, can be fostered through active participation in the Bar. The fourth value, professional self-development, appears to be mainly concerned with effective Continuing Legal Education programs that enhance lawyers' ability to learn through experience. Yet methods of promoting the second value are not only less obvious than they are for the other three values, but also more difficult. The MacCrate …
A Field Trip To Benetton ... And Beyond: Some Thoughts On "Outsider Narrative" In A Law School Clinic, Carolyn Grose
A Field Trip To Benetton ... And Beyond: Some Thoughts On "Outsider Narrative" In A Law School Clinic, Carolyn Grose
Clinical Law Review
One of the goals of clinicians as teachers is to train law students to listen to, hear and retell their clients' stories. This task is complicated by the fact that the students - who are for the most part white and middle-class, and by definition college-educated - inhabit a world vastly different from - indeed some might say diametrically opposed to - the world inhabited by the clinic's client population, which generally tends to be poor people with a limited education, and for the most part people of color. Given these differences, students' ability to hear and believe their clients' …
The Bounds Of Professionalism: Challenging Our Students; Challenging Ourselves, Beverly Balos
The Bounds Of Professionalism: Challenging Our Students; Challenging Ourselves, Beverly Balos
Clinical Law Review
Professor Aiken, in her article Striving to Teach "Justice, Fairness, and Morality," recognizes the importance of integrating the "analysis of difference into traditional courses to ensure that students begin the life-long process of examining their exercise of privilege and develop an appreciation of the professional value of striving for justice, fairness, and morality." Her article sets out a pedagogical approach to legal education with the goal of constructing a learning experience that maximizes reflection and unmasks privilege. Aiken's article raises important issues for all of us concerned with legal education and the competent representation of clients. Focusing first on the …
Voicing Differences, Margaret E. Montoya
Voicing Differences, Margaret E. Montoya
Clinical Law Review
Jane Aiken and Kimberly O'Leary undertake the difficult work of developing specific approaches and techniques for taking account of characteristics such as race/ethnicity, gender, dis/ability, and sexual identity in clinical pedagogy. Carolyn Grose uses outsider narratives and popular culture to challenge the "pre-understanding" of students, and to assist them to accept client stories as true and valid. Focusing on the professional value of striving to promote justice, fairness, and morality identified in the MacCrate Report, Professor Aiken exhorts us to promote justice by unmasking privilege, the invisible package of unearned assets- about which I (we? or you?) was "meant" to …
Fuzzy Thinking: A Borrowed Paradigm For Crisper Lawyering, David F. Chavkin
Fuzzy Thinking: A Borrowed Paradigm For Crisper Lawyering, David F. Chavkin
Clinical Law Review
The answer to Ed's question is that by applying bivalent or crisp thinking Catherine has reached an apparently unresolvable paradox. By contrast, by applying fuzzy thinking, Ed has found a real-life answer to this longstanding problem. Fuzzy logic thereby has bridged a gap and permitted a waltz that would not otherwise have been possible. On that basis alone, fuzzy logic deserves a careful examination. This article analyzes whether the "fuzzy thinking" paradigm has potential benefits for our clinical teaching and for improved performance of lawyering tasks by ourselves and by our students. It reviews the development of "fuzzy thinking" and …

Practice And Fit In The Allocation Of The Resource Of Faculty Time: A Study Of Current And Preferred Scholarly Practice Of The Faculties Of Ten Theological Schools Affiliated With The Presbyterian Church (Usa), Roger Allen Nicholson
Theses and Dissertations
Faculties, deans, and trustees of theological schools affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) were surveyed to determine current faculty practice; the practice preferred by faculty, deans. and trustees; the fit between current and preferred practice; and faculty practice and faculty preference difference according to categorical variables such as gender, race, and rank.
Seven variables defined faculty practice: workweek in hours, instruction, scholarship, service, advising, governance, and other. Scholarship was subdivided into three categories adapting Ernest Boyer’s multi-dimensional definition of scholarship: orginitive, applied, and teaching. Fit was defined in two ways: statistical fit and practical fit.
The reported workweek was comparable …

Popular Education: Adult Education For Social Change, Sandra Kerka
Popular Education: Adult Education For Social Change, Sandra Kerka
Partnerships/Community
Popular education is a form of adult education that encourages learners to examine their lives critically and take action to change social conditions. It is "popular" in the sense of being "of the people." Popular education emerged in Latin America in the 1960s-1970s; Paulo Freire is its best known exponent. However, its roots may be found in the French Revolution, in workers' education of the 1920s-1930s, and in such movements as the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee (Beder 1996; Jeria 1990). The goal of popular education is to develop "people's capacity for social change through a collective problem-solving approach emphasizing …

Perceived Effectiveness Of Audiographic Distance Education In Three Central Illinois High Schools, Kenneth R. Reed
Masters Theses
Audiographic conferencing is a distance education practice being used in schools. Audiographic conferencing utilizes hardware and software to provide interactive audio and data transmission between locations. This study was conducted to assess the perceived effectiveness of the components of audiographic distance education by teachers and students in three Central Illinois High Schools involved in utilizing audiographics as a delivery system in terms of hardware, software, teaching techniques, appropriateness of course content, delivery system, and student achievement.
The study took place during the 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 school years utilizing a survey of a population of teachers and students involved in …
Young Children's Talk At Play: Orientation To Self And Orientation To The Joint Exigencies Of Conversation, Paige K. Parker
Young Children's Talk At Play: Orientation To Self And Orientation To The Joint Exigencies Of Conversation, Paige K. Parker
Masters Theses
This study employed a conversation analytic approach to determine how children in naturally constructed play episodes use language as an object of play and how children in their naturally occurring talk display orientation to their own individual activities and others' social actions. The participants were thirty-nine kindergarten and first grade students at South Elementary School in Marshall, Illinois. The study is based upon fifteen hours of conversation collected during recess periods. Relevant segments from the corpus were transcribed according to an adapted version of Jefferson's Transcript Notation System (1984). The findings suggested that (1) the groups of children used language …

A Resource Document For The Development Of An Alternative Education Program For Disruptive Youth, Deborah Claunch
Masters Theses
This qualitative study developed a model for an alternative education program for disruptive students in grades 6 through 8 in Franklin and Williamson Counties in Southern Illinois. It was facilitated by the issuance of grant funds to the Regional Offices of Education by the Illinois State Board of Education under the Safe Schools Act of 1995.
The desire of the researcher was to develop a program that would lead to changes in behaviors, promote academic achievement, and return students to the regular school environment with fewer incidents of misbehavior. The outcomes of this qualitative study resulted in a comprehensive resource …
