Automation Of The Order Processing Of A Software Contract Manufacturing Facility, Jon M. Shapiro

Master's Projects

This project describes the process of implementing an automated order processing system for a small manufacturing company which started out with no standard business processes. In deciding the required features and the design path for the system, special emphasis is placed on the following topics:

  • Understanding why it is crucial for a small manufacturer to pay particular attention to improving its information flow.
  • Understanding the nature of the business, the company’s relations with customers and vendors, and its products.
  • Prototyping the eventual automated system using a “paper trail” approach.
  • Why choosing to develop the system with in house talents in …

A Case Study Of Partnerships In Practice, Heather Lorraine Macgillivary Jan 1997

A Case Study Of Partnerships In Practice, Heather Lorraine Macgillivary

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Despite calls for partnership from government, human service organizations, researchers, consumers and providers, there is very little literature about partnership. This research attempts to better understand the concept of partnership through a case study of Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health Inc., an organization which is implementing partnership oriented practices. Data collected included 11 key informant interviews, a review of documents, and process notes. Findings were organized around definition, facilitative and impeding factors, and outcomes of partnership. Defining values of partnership which emerged were collaborative interaction, power-sharing, shared decision-making, stakeholder involvement, resource sharing, shared responsibility, and equality. Facilitative and impeding …

The Comprehensive Organizational Social Support Tool: Cosst Assessment, Amanda Kroger

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis describes the development of an instrument (the Comprehensive Organizational Social Support Tool (COSST)) designed to assess the extent to which organizations foster socially supportive interactions amongst their employees. Research indicates that the support that individuals receive from their co-workers in the workplace can have a significant impact on their physical and emotional health, and their commitment to, and performance within, an organization. Organizations can do much to foster these kinds of supportive interactions. However, in order for an organization to determine the strategies it should employ in enhancing support, it is necessary to assess what it is currently …

Organizational Change And Inclusive Practices: Promoting Access For Diverse Populations In The Canadian Mental Health Association (Waterloo Region Branch) (Ontario), James W. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This research began a process and generated information that would help guide the Canadian Mental Health Association/Waterloo Region Branch (CMHA/WRB) in developing services that meet the needs of all residents in the area it serves. This project was comprised of two phases. The phases were conceptualized as being intervention cycles consisting of information, awareness and action-building components. The first phase consisted of work done within the agency itself, to help articulate the goals, attitudes, and possible barriers seen by the paid/non-paid staff towards the new multicultural emphasis. This work involved three focus groups with paid and non-paid staff. As well, …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The RAD54 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae plays a crucial role in recombinational repair of double-strand breaks in DNA. Here the isolation and functional characterization of the RAD54 homolog of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, DmRAD54, are described. The putative Dmrad54 protein displays 46 to 57% identity to its homologs from yeast and mammals. DmRAD54 RNA was detected at all stages of fly development, but an increased level was observed in early embryos and ovarian tissue. To determine the function of DmRAD54, a null mutant was isolated by random mutagenesis. DmRAD54-deficient flies develop normally, but the females …

Irrelevance, Minimal Relevance, And Meta-Relevance (Response To David Crump), Richard D. Friedman Jan 1997

Irrelevance, Minimal Relevance, And Meta-Relevance (Response To David Crump), Richard D. Friedman

Articles

Professor Crump's analysis runs the full traverse from academic theorizing to practical observation. I will attempt to follow him over the same course, addressing three questions among the congeries that he raises. First, is it true that all evidence satisfies the minimalist definition of relevance? Second, should evidentiary codes include a tighter definition of relevance? Third, how should we assess lawyers' use of evidence that, loosely speaking, is irrelevant?

To V Or Not To V - That Is The Regulatory Question: The Role Of The V-Chip In Government Regulation Of Broadcast And Cable Indecency, Marie A. Ryan Jan 1997

To V Or Not To V - That Is The Regulatory Question: The Role Of The V-Chip In Government Regulation Of Broadcast And Cable Indecency, Marie A. Ryan

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the current regulatory distinctions between broadcast and cable television in the United States are outdated and should be unified to better protect children from indecent content while respecting adult First Amendment rights. It proposes adopting a consistent "safe harbor" provision for both broadcast and basic cable television, combined with the use of the V-chip technology, as a constitutionally sound and less restrictive means of achieving the government's dual objectives of supporting parental authority and safeguarding children's well-being.

Evaluation Of 41 Elite And Exotic Inbred Sorghum Genotypes For High Quality Callus Production, Heidi F. Kaeppler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Interest is high in the genetic study and improvement of sorghum(Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), a crop of worldwide agronomic importance. The ability to initiate and maintain high quality (pigmentless, mucilage-free, fast growing, type II) callus cultures from a variety of sorghum genotypes is important for certain tissue culture-based genetic studies. The objective of this study was to identify high-quality callus-producing genotypes from a group of 41 diverse inbred sorghum lines. Callus cultures of 20 elite inbred sorghum genotypes and 21 inbred genotypes of exotic background were initiated from immature inflorescences. The cultures were subjected to several cycles of subculturing …

Canopy Architecture And Morphology Of Switchgrass Populations Differing In Forage Yield, Daren D. Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, Robert B. Mitchell Jan 1997

Canopy Architecture And Morphology Of Switchgrass Populations Differing In Forage Yield, Daren D. Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, Robert B. Mitchell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Phenotypic selection has been used to improve forage yield and in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD), but the effects on canopy architecture and morphology are not understood. Our objectives were to determine if canopy architecture and morphology can explain genotype x environment (G x E) yield differences in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and to evaluate canopy architecture and morphology as selection criteria for increasing yield. This study was conducted in 1993 near Mead, NE, and near Ames, IA. The experimental design was a randomized complete block experiment with a split-plot arrangement of four replicates at each location. Whole plots …

Genetic Variation In North American Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Determined By Dna Markers, Martha L. Rowe, Donald J. Lee, Scott Nissen, Brunella M. Bowditch, Robert A. Masters

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Levels of inter- and intrapopulation genetic variation were determined in five North American populations of leafy spurge using chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) RFLPs and RAPD markers. Thirteen plastome types were identified among 123 individuals collected from five geographically separated populations. Number of pastimes within a population ranged from one to seven, with four of the populations having a predominate type plus one or more rarer types. Some plastome types were shared by populations, but plastome distribution among populations was nonrandom. RAPD markers indicated greatest relatedness among individuals within a population. Relatedness among populations as established through RAPDs was greater for geographically …

Systematics Of Gastrointestinal Nematodes Of Domestic Ruminants: Advances Between 1992 And 1995 And Proposals For Future Research, J.R. Lichtenfels, E.P. Hoberg, D.S. Zarlenga Jan 1997

Systematics Of Gastrointestinal Nematodes Of Domestic Ruminants: Advances Between 1992 And 1995 And Proposals For Future Research, J.R. Lichtenfels, E.P. Hoberg, D.S. Zarlenga

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Systematics of trichostrongyloid nematodes of ruminants provides a foundation for diagnostics and responds to the need to identify eggs in feces, free-living larvae from pastures or fecal cultures and larval or adult nematodes collected from hosts. These needs are associated with diagnostic problems or research projects. Difficulties in identifying all developmental stages of trichostrongyloid nematodes of domestic ruminants still severely limit the effective diagnosis and control of these parasites. Phylogentetic hypotheses as the basis for predictive classifications have been developed only for the subfamilies of the Trichostrongylidae. This report briefly describes recent progress in the development of improved tools …

The Birds Of Perth's Urban Parks : Factors Influencing Their Distribution And Community Attitudes Towards Them, Jodi S. Mansell Jan 1997

The Birds Of Perth's Urban Parks : Factors Influencing Their Distribution And Community Attitudes Towards Them, Jodi S. Mansell

Theses : Honours

Knowledge of the general responses of bird populations to urbanisation and an understanding of their habitat requirements is necessary to ensure the continuation of bird life in urban areas. Most of the literature on urban birds around the world has concentrated on birds in streets and remnant patches. Urban parks provide much potential habitat for birds, although there are few publications addressing this issue. The aims of this project were to determine the terrestrial avifauna of Perth's northern suburban parks, investigate physical factors that might influence the distribution of birds, and determine the attitudes of park users towards birds in …

Pink And Blue See Red Differently: Influences Of Gender, Gender Role And Gender Of The Target On Anger Experience And Expression, Darryl George Milovchevich Jan 1997

Pink And Blue See Red Differently: Influences Of Gender, Gender Role And Gender Of The Target On Anger Experience And Expression, Darryl George Milovchevich

Theses : Honours

Anger is a commonly experienced emotion popularly thought to differ for men and women. However, because of definitional confusion and methodological limitations, there has been little useful empirical exploration of these differences. Current research findings on anger have, further, been limited by being based on non-random convenience samples of students and clinical populations. Research has produced inconclusive evidence for the effect of gender differences on measures of anger. Gender role identification has been identified as possible influencing factor. In the current study, the author drew a random sample from the general population of a small Australian city. Participants (n = …

Monitoring Of Oxygen Saturation During And After Endoscopy, George Paul Van Lawick Jan 1997

Monitoring Of Oxygen Saturation During And After Endoscopy, George Paul Van Lawick

Theses : Honours

Fibreoptic endoscopy is a common and relatively safe diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to examine the gastrointestinal tract. Previous research has established that oxygen desaturation is common among patients undergoing endoscopy and is one of the few complications which may arise during, and after the procedure. Oxygen saturation (Sa02) is a measurement of the percentage of oxygen carried by the haemoglobin and can be measured noninvasively and accurately using a pulse oximeter. Oxygen desaturation is generally described as Sa02 levels at or below 90%. Currently there are no clear guidelines for the duration of Sa02 monitoring …

Teaching Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondence Rules To Children With Learning Difficulties : An Implementation Of The Fernald Method, Paula Kinsman Jan 1997

Teaching Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondence Rules To Children With Learning Difficulties : An Implementation Of The Fernald Method, Paula Kinsman

Theses : Honours

A single subject design was used to investigate the effectiveness of the Fernald method as an instructional technique for teaching phoneme-grapheme correspondence rules. Participants were tour primary grade children with learning difficulties in reading. Intervention training focussed on teaching phoneme-grapheme correspondence rules through the implementation of an adapted version of the Fernald method. The two dependent variables were word recognition and fluency rates. The design of the study allowed analysis of maintenance and generalisation of the relevant variables. Results demonstrated an increase in word recognition skills and fluency rates by all four children with learning difficulties. Maintenance of these gains …

Cross-Talk Between Adherens Junctions And Desmosomes Depends On Plakoglobin, Jani E. Lewis, James K. Wahl Iii, Kristin M. Sass, Pamels J. Jensen, Pamela J. Johnson, Margaret J. Wheelock Jan 1997

Cross-Talk Between Adherens Junctions And Desmosomes Depends On Plakoglobin, Jani E. Lewis, James K. Wahl Iii, Kristin M. Sass, Pamels J. Jensen, Pamela J. Johnson, Margaret J. Wheelock

Biology

Squamous epithelial cells have both adherens junctions and desmosomes. The ability of these cells to organize the desmosomal proteins into a functional structure depends upon their ability first to organize an adherens junction. Since the adherens junction and the desmosome are separate structures with different molecular make up, it is not immediately obvious why formation of an adherens junction is a prerequisite for the formation of a desmosome. The adherens junction is composed of a transmembrane classical cadherin (E-cadherin and/or P-cadherin in squamous epithelial cells) linked to either β-catenin or plakoglobin, which is linked to α-catenin, which is linked to …

Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville Jan 1997

Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville

Honors Theses

Calcium metabolism is involved in many ways in the cellular activities of the colonial green alga, Volvox carteri. Various drugs that are known in other systems to cause specific changes in calcium metabolism, gave rise to various visible metabolic effects in this study. These effects provide evidence for calcium's role in Volvox growth and development and in its cytoskeleton. Another way that calcium exerts its effect on Volvox is by acting as a second messenger in a G-protein/inositol phosphate signal transduction pathway.

This study also supports the fact that cytoskeletal components are important for development in Volvox. Both microtubules and …
