The International City Hypothesis: An Approach To The Recent History Of U.S. Cities, Carl Abbott Jan 1997

The International City Hypothesis: An Approach To The Recent History Of U.S. Cities, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Differentiates between the concepts of world cities and international cities, asserting that study of international cities offers greater opportunities for research and analysis of major urban regions of the latter 20th century. The world city model emphasizes hierarchy and status based on influence and power. The international city model emphasizes numerous indicators that demonstrate a broader range of international connections, including foreign tourists, new immigration, sister-city affiliations, and multinational corporation offices. They may function as production centers, gateway cities, or transactional cities. At present, statistical data are thin, and the topic invites research by urban historians.

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Jan 1997

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Insertion mutations in two Vibrio cholerae genes, cya and crp, which encode adenylate cyclase and the cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein (CRP), respectively, derepressed the expression of a chromosomal cholera toxin (CT) promoter-lacZ fusion at the nonpermissive temperature of 37 degrees C. In the classical biotype strain O395, the crp mutation increased the production of both CT and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) in vitro under a variety of growth conditions not normally permissive for their expression. The most dramatic increase in CT and TCP was observed with the crp mutant in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium pH 8.5, at 30 degrees C. El …

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell Jan 1997

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Much of the scholarly debate about hate crime laws focuses on a discussion of their constitutionality under the First Amendment. Part of larger empirical study of police methods of investigating hate crimes, this Note attempts to shift thinking in this area beyond the existing debate over the constitutionality of hate crime legislation to a discussion of how low-level criminal justice personnel, such as the police, enforce hate crime laws. This Note argues that, since hate crimes are an area in which police have great discretion in enforcing the law, their understanding of the First Amendment and how it relates to …

Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith Jan 1997

Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith

Theses

This project started as an exercise in a creative writing cluster class. Then I paid a visit to my mother and heard a couple of stories about two nephews that were poignant, yet amusing. I wrote them as I heard them, in conversational style, and the format of my story-poems was born.

The first three chapters cover my background, my training, the influences on my writing, and specifically, examples of three authors whose writing encouraged me to write. The training emphasized factual writing in business communications and journalism. Because of this training, most of the facts in the poems are …

Winter Counts As Possible Precursors To Writing, Petra Eccarius Jan 1997

Winter Counts As Possible Precursors To Writing, Petra Eccarius

Nebraska Anthropologist

Native Americans of the Great Plains did not have a formal system of writing. These groups did, however, have various types of graphical representation. One such example is the Siouan winter counts, pictures recorded once each winter on buffalo hide (or later on cloth) which served as mnemonic devices for a partial oral history and calendar of the group to which it belonged. Scholars often study the subject matter of these counts in order to gain historic or cultural information about Native groups. Despite the facts that only one important or unusual event is depicted each year, and that the …

Segmentation As A Method For Improving Model Generated Estimates Of Recreational Boating Use, Tsung-Chiung Wu, Edward M. Mahoney, Daniel J. Stynes Jan 1997

Segmentation As A Method For Improving Model Generated Estimates Of Recreational Boating Use, Tsung-Chiung Wu, Edward M. Mahoney, Daniel J. Stynes

Visions in Leisure and Business

The primary purpose of this study is to develop a system of models based on boat storage segments that can generate different estimates of boating use for regions and counties. It is based on the premise that models that incorporate market segmentation are more efficient and generate more accurate estimates of recreational use when a market is comprised of identifiable market segments. The results show that incorporating storage segments as part of the system of models improves estimates of both the amount and spatial distribution of boating use. The boating use estimates generated by the system of models captures the …

Attitudes Of Japanese Ski Tour Operators Toward Western U.S. Ski Resorts, Sachi Sawamura, Daniel D. Mclean Jan 1997

Attitudes Of Japanese Ski Tour Operators Toward Western U.S. Ski Resorts, Sachi Sawamura, Daniel D. Mclean

Visions in Leisure and Business

The study was designed to provide important information about the Japanese ski market to U.S. ski resort marketers. One hundred-forty tour operating professionals responded to the survey. The perceived promotional activity level of Japanese tour operating companies toward U.S. ski destinations was found to be neither active nor inactive. The level of knowledge Japanese tour operating professionals have of U.S. ski resorts was found to be limited. There was a significant relationship between how they perceived their companies' promotion activity level toward U.S. ski tour packages and how well the same professionals knew these ski destinations. There was also a …

Tourism As An Instrument Of Peace--Is Cross-Cultural Preparation The Answer? Rationale And Methodology, Barbara D. Steffen Jan 1997

Tourism As An Instrument Of Peace--Is Cross-Cultural Preparation The Answer? Rationale And Methodology, Barbara D. Steffen

Visions in Leisure and Business

Communication and work with members of other cultures is essential, especially in the tourist industry. Individuals have their own customs, values, and traditions and it is difficult to overcome them to see the importance of other cultures. This judgmental view is the root of difficulties in relating on equal terms with people of another culture. Cross-cultural awareness and communication skills are useful in helping to overcome cultural differences and to develop tourism as an instrument of education and peace.

Trends In Taiwan's Tourism Market, Kuan-Chou Chen Jan 1997

Trends In Taiwan's Tourism Market, Kuan-Chou Chen

Visions in Leisure and Business

In 1979, Taiwan's government relaxed the outbound travel market. The situations of inbound and outbound travel market are gradually changing. The number of outbound travelers exceeded inbound travelers for the first time in 1989. With one of Asia's highest economic growth rates, a huge accumulation of foreign exchange and appreciation on outbound travel, Taiwan has become a source of outbound tourists second in Asia only to Japan. From 1981 to 1995, the average growth rate of outbound travelers was 18% per year.

This study examines the recent trends in Taiwan's inbound and outbound travel markets, analyses the structure of the …

Influence (Or The Lack Of It) In The Economics Profession: The Case Of Lucien Albert Hahn, Robert Leeson Jan 1997

Influence (Or The Lack Of It) In The Economics Profession: The Case Of Lucien Albert Hahn, Robert Leeson

Business Papers and Journal Articles

This article provides information on economist Lucien Albert Hahn's influence on economics, and highlights similarity between Hahn and A.W. Phillips. Hahn's work was, in some important circles, fairly central to what Gottfried Haberler called the last great debate on inflation in the 1950s. The great debate in the 1970s was over the Phillips curve trade-off; in the 1950s, economist Sumner H. Slichter advocated the proposition that creeping inflation could be permanently tolerated. The context was the Delphic Oracular quality of the 1946 U.S. Employment Act, and the apparent incompatibility of the pursuit of full employment with price stability. Hahn was …
