Protection Of Famous Trademarks In Japan And The United States, Kenneth L. Port Jan 1997

Protection Of Famous Trademarks In Japan And The United States, Kenneth L. Port

Faculty Scholarship

The concepts of trademark jurisprudence in Japan and the United States differ drastically. This difference is apparent in many aspects of trademark protection in both countries and is most evident in the treatment of famous marks. Although Japan and the United States share elements of trademark law that cause some observers to claim that Japan is legally the fifty-first State, the conceptual differences at the foundation of trademark law in each country are so significant that such a claim seems inaccurate and misleading.

Cooperative Control Of Dual Arm Manipulator, Manoharan Selvarajan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research focuses on the development of a controller for the cooperation control of dual arm mechanical manipulator. A controller for the position control of unconstrained robot arm without velocity measurements is also presented; The experimental set-up consists Remotec's RM-10A dual arm manipulator. Each arm has six separate motorized motions with position sensors. The arm has also an end effector and is provided with a six axes Force/Torque sensor. The manipulator is controlled by two TMS320C40 parallel Digital Signal Processors. The control software which is embedded on the Digital Signal Processor is developed using C language. A Graphical User Interface …

Landscape Change And Livestock In Sixteenth-Century New Spain: The Archival Data Base, Andrew Sluyter Jan 1997

Landscape Change And Livestock In Sixteenth-Century New Spain: The Archival Data Base, Andrew Sluyter

Faculty Publications

Despite the wealth of Mexican archival data pertinent to understanding the ecological interaction between livestock and landscape during the sixteenth century in New Spain, some fundamental methodological issues persist in the use of the mercedes, or land grants. The degree of completeness of the extant mercedes record and the de facto areal extents of the cattle and sheep estancias both remain uncertain. A cartographic method applied to mercedes for the central Veracruz lowlands addresses those issues and suggests a general method for rigorous analysis of the data base. That method demonstrates that the extant mercedes provide a nearly complete record …

Transgenic Dairy Cattle: Genetic Engineering On A Large Scale, R. J. Wall, D. E. Kerr, K. R. Bondioli Jan 1997

Transgenic Dairy Cattle: Genetic Engineering On A Large Scale, R. J. Wall, D. E. Kerr, K. R. Bondioli

Faculty Publications

Amid the explosion of fundamental knowledge generated from transgenic animal models, a small group of scientists has been producing transgenic livestock with goals of improving animal production efficiency and generating new products. The ability to modify mammary-specific genes provides an opportunity to pursue several distinctly different avenues of research. The objective of the emerging gene "pharming" industry is to produce pharmaceuticals for treat-ing human diseases. It is argued that mammary glands are an ideal site for producing complex bioactive proteins that can be cost effectively harvested and purified. Consequently, during the past decade, approximately a dozen companies have been created …

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell Jan 1997

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Much of the scholarly debate about hate crime laws focuses on a discussion of their constitutionality under the First Amendment. Part of a larger empirical study of police methods of investigating hate crimes, this Note attempts to shift thinking in this area beyond the existing debate over the constitutionality of hate crime legislation to a discussion of how low-level criminal justice personnel, such as the police, enforce hate crime laws. This Note argues that, since hate crimes are an area in which police have great discretion in enforcing the law, their understanding of the First Amendment and how it relates …

Race-Conscious Diversity Admissions Programs: Furthering A Compelling Interest, Marty B. Lorenzo Jan 1997

Race-Conscious Diversity Admissions Programs: Furthering A Compelling Interest, Marty B. Lorenzo

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article argues that narrowly tailored, race-conscious admissions programs can be employed to achieve a more diverse student body and consequently a more enlightened and egalitarian society. An admissions body which looks beyond traditional academic indicators and explores the whole person of each applicant will matriculate a group of students with a wide variety of race, gender, class and other backgrounds, thereby fostering a robust exchange of ideas among these students. Pointing to the enduring precedential value of Bakke as well as the ideological makeup of the Supreme Court, this Article asserts that the Courts would likely uphold a program …
