Education's Promise, Laurel Oates, Sam Wineberg Jan 1997

Education's Promise, Laurel Oates, Sam Wineberg

Faculty Articles

This is a story with at least two parts. In the first part, Sam Wineburg, a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Washington, tells his story, the story of instruction in the United States, beginning with one revolution, the scientific revolution, and ending with another, the cognitive revolution. In the second part, Laurel Oates, the Director of Legal Writing at Seattle University School of Law, tells our story, the story of legal education and, in particular, legal writing, and how both have been affected by these revolutions.

The Effects Of Adrenergic And Cholinergic Stimulation On Skin Gland Secretions In The Dwarf African Frog Hymenochirus Curtipes, Daniel H. Gong Jan 1997

The Effects Of Adrenergic And Cholinergic Stimulation On Skin Gland Secretions In The Dwarf African Frog Hymenochirus Curtipes, Daniel H. Gong

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have been done on the neural control of serous gland secretion in the skin of frogs and newts. However, no studies have been published on the effects of adrenergic and cholinergic neurotransmitters on the sexually dimorphic breeding glands of male frogs. The present study examined the effects of neurotransmitters on the serous and breeding glands of Hymenochirus curtipes. Explants of dorsal skin and postaxial skin (containing whole breeding glands) were incubated in vitro with epinephrine, norepinephrine or acetylcholine for 30 minutes. The explants were then preserved and examined histologically for signs of secretion. The area and perimeter of …

The U.S. National Marine Sanctuary Program: Effectiveness Of Diver Education In The Florida Keys, Rebekah Resnick Padgett Jan 1997

The U.S. National Marine Sanctuary Program: Effectiveness Of Diver Education In The Florida Keys, Rebekah Resnick Padgett

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines the educational program of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), and its effectiveness for divers and snorkelers. It was hypothesized that intended educational messages were not reaching divers and snorkelers at the sanctuary. Between late December 1996 and early January 1997, 194 surveys were conducted in person in the Key Largo region. Data was collected regarding the demographics of the divers and snorkelers and their purposes for coming to dive in the Keys. In particular, information was accumulated regarding whether they learned anything about the marine environment of the Florida Keys, what they learned, and how …

Teaching Electronically: The Chicago-Kent Experiment, Richard Warner Jan 1997

Teaching Electronically: The Chicago-Kent Experiment, Richard Warner

Seattle University Law Review

Certain basic goals are widely shared, relatively uncontroversial, and sufficiently important that it makes sense to ask whether computer technology can improve our ability to achieve those goals. Consider the following four goals. This Review will focus primarily on the second goal (understanding the rationales behind the rules). Of course, to improve students' abilities to achieve this goal may also improve their abilities to achieve the first goal (knowledge of black letter rules) as a knowledge of a rule is obviously a precondition of understanding its purpose. Improving students' abilities to understand the rationale behind a rule may also improve …

Bridging The Analogy Gap: The Internet, The Printing Press And Freedom Of Speech, Jonathan Wallace, Michael Green

Seattle University Law Review

The Supreme Court will bring the highest degree of clarity to the Internet freedom of speech debate if, in ACLU v. Reno, it sets forth the operative metaphor for freedom of speech and applies the metaphor in conjunction with an appropriate analogy for the technology.Part I of this Article discusses judicial decision-making tools with an emphasis on the use of analogy and the importance of applying legal precedents in a manner which is consistent and logical. Part I also discusses the use of metaphor in judicial decisionmaking and illustrates how operative metaphors for free speech have served to provide …

Role Of Calcium And Other Cations On Contractile Vacuole Activity Of Tetrahymena Thermophila, Robert William Bird Jan 1997

Role Of Calcium And Other Cations On Contractile Vacuole Activity Of Tetrahymena Thermophila, Robert William Bird

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The contractile vacuole (CV) of Tetrahymena removes fluids from the cell and maintains cellular integrity. Although many studies have been done, it is not fully understood what controls its function. Therefore, this study sought to further elucidate an understanding of what controls the activity of the CV. The effect of calcium on CV activity was studied. Twenty-four hour cultures of Tetrahymena were centrifuged, washed in an experimental solution and isolated. Single cells were measured and analyzed using computer video imaging and analysis programs. Compared to control cells, cells treated with calcium have statistically significant differences (P < 0.00001) in the following parameters: smaller overall cell volume, CV volume, and the interval between contractions. Calcium has an effect on CV activity. Increases in calcium result in decreases in cell volume and CV volume. Cadmium treated cells differed (P < 0.00001) from control cells in cell volume, CV volume, kinetics (slope) of contraction, and the interval between contractions. Increases in cadmium, relative to calcium, result in increased cell and CV volumes. Taken together, these results indicate that the control of CV activity in Tetrahymena is through stretch-activated ion selective calcium channels.

Classroom 'Role-Playing': Performance Approaches To Characterization, Gerald Lee Ratliff Jan 1997

Classroom 'Role-Playing': Performance Approaches To Characterization, Gerald Lee Ratliff

Iowa Journal of Communication

Successful classroom role-playing that promotes imaginative performance approaches to characterization initially depend upon a student performer's ability to analyze literature to determine what the author has suggested about character actions and events; and a student performer's ability to cultivate critical skills of analysis and interpretation that ultimately give voice and body to a representative character portrait in classroom performance. Careful analysis of the selected literature includes reading with a critical eye, isolating mental symbols that clearly define character intention or motivation, and a classroom performance blueprint that encourages creative self-expression and exploration of role-playing strategies and techniques. The creative extent …

Serologic And Molecular Detection Of Granulocytic Ethrlichiosis In Rhode Island, Min-Tsung Yeh, Thomas N. Mather, Richard T. Coughlin, Cindy Gingrich-Baker, John W. Sumner, Robert F. Massung

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

A new indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA) assay with antigen produced in vitro in the human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL60 was used to identify the first recognized case of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in Rhode Island. This IFA assay was used to detect granulocytic ehrlichiae in white-footed mice and in a dog inhabiting the area surrounding the patient’s residence. Host-seeking Ixodes scapularis ticks found in the same habitat also were infected. I. scapularis ticks collected from other locations were fed on dogs and New Zealand White rabbits to assess the competency of these species as hosts of granulocytotropic Ehrlichia. Tick-induced …

Duration Of Immunity To Reinfection With Tick-Transmitted Borrelia Burgdorferi In Naturally Infected Mice, Joseph Piesman, Marc C. Dolan, Christine M. Happ, Benjamin J. Luft, Sean E. Rooney, Thomas N. Mather, William T. Golde

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The ability of naturally infected and cured mice to resist reinfection with tick-transmitted Borrelia burgdorferi was tested over a 1-year period. All of the mice were resistant to reinfection when they were challenged at 1.5 months after cure. The majority of animals were resistant to reinfection for up to 10.5 months after cure, but this resistance was lost at 1 year after cure. Both protected and unprotected animals showed a diverse array of antibodies on Western immunoblots. Protection was not associated with the killing of spirochetes in ticks, and naturally infected mice produced no antibodies to outer surface protein A …

Akhnai, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 1997

Akhnai, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In the Talmudic story of the Oven of Akhnai, Rabbi Eliezer - symbol of unchanging law and original intent - decides a disputed issue of law, supporting his claim with all the arguments in the world and then with miracles including a voice from the Author proclaiming his interpretation correct. Nonetheless, his interpretation is rejected.

The Akhnai story is a complicated commentary on the problems of democracy and justice, with insights into the majoritarian (and counter-majoritarian) difficulties, the status of ancient law, and the meaning of originalist interpretation. I draw out lessons for those who seek to create a single …

Understanding Of Wetlands As Expressed By Selected Community Leaders, Donald Nathan Bardole Jan 1997

Understanding Of Wetlands As Expressed By Selected Community Leaders, Donald Nathan Bardole

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study focuses on ascertaining the understanding of wetlands by selected community and state leaders and determining the source of that knowledge. Because of the subjects' positions of influence, this information may become an important element in understanding the decisions made by those community and state leaders. An interview survey was designed and piloted for this study. Community and state leadership positions were first delineated and then individuals selected from each category. The subjects varied considerably in their knowledge of wetlands, showed the presence of professional expediency, and agreed that regulation in some form is necessary. The wetlands knowledge held …

The Roles Of Harsh And Fluctuating Conditions In The Dynamics Of Cological Communities, P Chesson, Nancy J. Huntly Jan 1997

The Roles Of Harsh And Fluctuating Conditions In The Dynamics Of Cological Communities, P Chesson, Nancy J. Huntly

Biology Faculty Publications

Harsh conditions (e.g., mortality and stress) reduce population growth rates directly; secondarily, they may reduce the intensity of interactions between organisms. Near-exclusive focus on the secondary effect of these forms of harshness has led ecologists to believe that they reduce the importance of ecological interactions, such as competition, and favor coexistence of even ecologically very similar species. By examining both the costs and the benefits, we show that harshness alone does not lessen the importance of species interactions or limit their role in community structure. Species coexistence requires niche differences, and harshness does not in itself make coexistence more likely. …
