Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We suggested that food preference depends on the interplay between flavour and post-ingestive effects, and we predicted that protein-restricted lambs would acquire preferences for foods paired with supplemental sources of N, including urea (Expts 1 and 2), casein (Expt 3), and gluten (Expt 4). In each experiment, twenty lambs, in two groups of ten, were conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received wheat straw (Expts 1, 3, and 4) or ground barley (Expt 2) flavoured with a distinctive flavour, and lambs in group 2 received the same food but with a different flavour. On even-numbered days, …

Preference For Wheat Straw By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Infusions Of Starch, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We hypothesized that feed preference depends on the interplay between flavour and postingestive effects, and we tested two predictions based on this hypothesis: (1) lambs acquire preferences for poorly nutritious feeds paired with starch; and (2) preferences persist when starch is no longer administered. Twenty lambs were randomly allocated to two groups and conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received onion-flavoured wheat straw and lambs in group 2 received oregano-flavoured wheat straw. On even-numbered days, the flavours were switched and starch (2.5-9.4% of the digestible energy received/d) was infused into the rumen of all animals during …
Fourmile Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service
Fourmile Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service
Final Environmental Impact Statements (ID)
This Final Environmental Impact Statement documents the analysis of four alternatives, including a "no action" alternative, that were developed for the proposed Fourmile timber sale. The sale area is on the New Meadows Ranger District of the Payette National Forest. The alternatives respond differently to the major issues and resources that were identified for this project. The purpose of the project is to improve the silvicultural conditions of timber stands in the area. Harvest emphasis to accomplish this would include removing dead, dying, and high-risk trees to improve the long term health and vigor of timber stands.

Shirley Mountain Planning Review Travel Management Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessments (WY)
The purpose of conducting the planning review is to analyze and weigh the benefits/consequences of changing the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) designation for the Shirley Mountain Planning Review Area from "limited to all existing roads and trails" to "limited to designated roads and trails only." Recommendations to reduce road density in the planning review area were made in the Shirley Mountain Habitat Management Plan, written in 1985 and also in the Wyoming Game and Fish (WGFD) Shirley Mountain Habitat Analysis, written in 1994. The BLM, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and the private land owners on Shirley Mountain formed a …
Lavinia Dock: Adams County Suffragette, Mary Lou Schwartz
Lavinia Dock: Adams County Suffragette, Mary Lou Schwartz
Adams County History
In the aftermath of the anniversary celebrations held to commemorate women's right to vote, it is fitting to remember an Adams county resident who figured prominently in the most militant phase of the suffrage campaign-Lavinia Lloyd Dock.
Lavinia Dock was born February 26, 1858, the second child of Gilliard and Lavinia Lloyd Bombaugh Dock. Gilliard, who had attended Gettysburg College, was a well-to-do engineer and machinist. Both parents were liberal in their views. Lavinia said that "Father had some whimsical masculine prejudices, but Mother was broad on all subjects and very tolerant and charitable towards persons." Although the family, eventually …

Environmental Malthusianism: Integrating Population And Environmental Policy, Robert M. Hardaway
Environmental Malthusianism: Integrating Population And Environmental Policy, Robert M. Hardaway
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
In his Article, Professor Hardaway argues that while Thomas Malthus may have been incorrect in his assertion that the growing population would deplete food supplies causing starvation and disease, Malthus accurately assessed the environmental impact of population. Professor Hardaway argues that overpopulation depletes natural resources and degrades the environment. He urges environmentalists to focus on population growth, rather than short term and remedial solutions, to solve environmental problems. In order to focus on population growth, society must face tough issues such as abortion, family planning, immigration, and economic growth policies.

A Request To The High Court: Don't Let The Patent Laws Be Distracted By A Flashy Trade Dress, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 323 (1997), Manotti L. Jenkins
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, in Vornado Air Circulation Systems Inc. v. Duracraft Corp., held in the negative the issue of "whether a product configuration is entitled to trade dress protection when it is or has been a significant inventive component of an invention covered by a utility patent." The court viewed the case involved as an issue of the "intersection of the Patent Act and the Lanham Trade-Mark Act," and reasoned that "patent policy dictates" that the Patent Act should prevail in these situations. The United States Supreme Court denied certiorari upon appeal by …
Personal Jurisdiction In Cyberspace: The Constitutional Boundary Of Minimum Contacts Limited To A Web Site, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 819 (1997), David L. Stott
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
This comment analyzes the limits of personal jurisdiction arising from cyberspace contacts through a discussion of the traditional framework of personal jurisdiction, including a minimum contacts analysis. It examines pertinent decisions wherein the courts apply the personal jurisdiction framework to contacts limited to the Internet, such as CompuServe v. Patterson, Zippo Manufacturing v. Zippo Dot Com, Bensusan v. King, and Hearst v. Goldberger. The comment further analogizes the minimum contacts involved in cyberspace transactions by using the narrow "stream of commerce" analysis adopted by Justice O'Connor in Asahi requiring additional activity within a jurisdiction for personal jurisdiction to exist within …

The West German Smorgasbord Approach To Intellectual Property Protection Of Computer Software, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 883 (1997), Larry N. Woodard
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
There is a lack of efficient protection for intellectual property within the computer software medium. Intellectual property of computer software has traditionally been protected by copyrights and relatively recently has been afforded protection of its intellectual property via patents. The distinction between a computer's hardware and a computer's software is decreasing; likewise, the distinction for such protection, namely patents and copyrights, respectively, should be decreased or eliminated, as well. After a brief comparative analysis of patent and copyright protection for computer software, an alternative to the current system of protection for software intellectual property exists. The nature of the software …

Many public libraries provide patrons with free public-access Internet terminals, largely for accessing information available on the World Wide Web. However, public concern exists over the ability of children who browse the Web without adult supervision to view sexually explicit materials and other inappropriate items. This concern has led to the development of various Internet filtering software programs. Some filtering programs operate by blocking access to documents containing certain words or phrases or combinations thereof. However, more common programs permit access only to documents or sites that appear in a pre-selected, "safe" database or that block access to documents that …

Private Financing Of Criminal Prosectuions And The Differing Protections Of Liberty And Equality In The Criminal Justice System, Joseph E. Kennedy
Private Financing Of Criminal Prosectuions And The Differing Protections Of Liberty And Equality In The Criminal Justice System, Joseph E. Kennedy
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Government prosecutors have begun accepting, and in some cases soliciting, voluntary contributions from the private sector in order to finance certain types of criminal prosecutions. Such private financing introduces a new tension between society's interest in punishing the guilty and society's interest in equal treatment by government. Private financing of criminal prosecution also raises interesting questions as to whether institutions, as opposed to individuals, can be biased by money.
This Article concludes that private financing in any of its likely forms threatens important equality interests. Part I argues that conflict-of-interest rules provide the only protection for important equality interests implicated …

G97-1315 Composting Manure And Other Organic Residues, Bahman Eghball
G97-1315 Composting Manure And Other Organic Residues, Bahman Eghball
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Composting is becoming more common in Nebraska because of the many advantages it offers. This NebGuide provides information on the composting process and its management and related issues.
The Composting Process
Composting is the aerobic decomposition of manure or other organic materials in the thermophilic temperature range (104-149°F). The composted material is odorless, fine-textured, and low-moisture and can be bagged and sold for use in gardens, or nurseries or used as fertilizer on cropland with little odor or fly breeding potential. Composting improves the handling characteristics of any organic residue by reducing its volume and weight. Composting can kill pathogens …

Ec97-2505 Signs And Symptoms Of Pesticide Poisoning, Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg, Edward F. Vitzthum
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Accidental exposure or overexposure to pesticides can have serious implications. The potential for pesticide accidents is real. It has been estimated that more than 36 million pounds of pesticide active ingredients are used annually in Nebraska. While most of these pesticides can be used with relatively little risk (as long as label directions are followed), some are extremely toxic and require special precautions.
The Poison Center, at the Children's Hospital in Omaha, reports that agricultural pesticides are responsible for 4.6 percent of all accidental exposures reported. A recent study surveyed callers to The Poison Center who were exposed to agricultural …
Ec97-1874 Diseases Affecting Grain And Seed Quality In Wheat, John E. Watkins, Larry J. Prentice
Ec97-1874 Diseases Affecting Grain And Seed Quality In Wheat, John E. Watkins, Larry J. Prentice
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Seed-associated diseases of wheat draw considerable attention because they often reduce both grain quality and yield. In addition ergot and scab diseases bring in a third dimension because toxins associated with each present a potentially serious health risk to humans and animals. Yield losses caused by smuts are roughly equal to the percentage of smutted heads in the field; however, losses from black point, scab or ergot are less easily measured. For example, wheat in the soft dough stage that is infected by one of the scab pathogens may still produce plump, good test weight kernels resulting in minimal yield …
G97-1314 Medication Withdrawal In Beef Cattle, Dicky D. Griffin, Dale Grotelueschen
G97-1314 Medication Withdrawal In Beef Cattle, Dicky D. Griffin, Dale Grotelueschen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide lists the current withdrawal times for medications used in beef cattle.
Using proper livestock medications is very important. Proper use not only ensures maximal benefits from the medication but minimizes the chances of an unwanted residue. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has worked hard to develop a premiere quality assurance program. In conjunction with other national and state beef and veterinary associations, the Beef Quality Assurance program now extends to almost every state in the nation. As a result, the safety and quality of beef has never been better. The outstanding record includes having an extremely low rate …

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead
Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
Over the past few decades our focus on learning science has evolved (Aikenhead, 1996; Cobern, 1993, 1994; Solomon, 1994). The psychological perspectives on the individual learner of earlier years, such as Piaget, Ausubel, and personal constructivism (West and Pines, 1985), have expanded to encompass sociological perspectives that contextualize learning in social settings; for instance, social constructivism, science for specific social purposes, and situated cognition (Goodnow, 1990; Hennessy, 1993; Layton, Davey and Jenkins, 1986; O'Loughlin, 1992; Solomon, 1987; Tharp and Gallimore, 1988). This chapter addresses the next stage in the evolution of our focus on learning science—an anthropological perspective that contextualizes …

Price Dispersions In Auction Markets: A Case Study Of The Cattle Auction Markets, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder, Deevon Bailey
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This study investigated the different factors affecting selected cattle auction prices and their dispersions to establish the market structure and nature of price equilibria. Overall, price dispersions were influenced by the season, type of cattle, breed, sex, geographical location, total number of lots auctioned, price slides, proportions of different cattle classes, lot size, base weight, type of flesh and type of frame. Prices were highest in winter and lowest in fall. Prices variations were lowest in winter and highest in fall. Price dispersions were more peaked in fall and least peaked in summer. Price equilibria were monopolistically competitive, monopsonistically competitive, …
