Mari Sandoz: Portrait Of A Swiss American Author, Laura Villiger Feb 1997

Mari Sandoz: Portrait Of A Swiss American Author, Laura Villiger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Land of Promise, where the gold flows, where buffaloes roam in big herds attracting adventurous hunters, where Redskins are chased and defeated by cowboy heroes-these are some of the ideas people in the 19th century commonly held about the American West. Even today, the Old West is often associated with the same pictures. But we also know today that these pictures largely belonged to a myth--a myth propagated in Europe as well as in the so-called 'civilized' East of the American continent. It helped to take hold of the Western territory not only in people's minds, but also in reality.

Critical Race Praxis: Race Theory And Political Lawyering Practice In Post-Civil Rights America, Eric K. Yamamoto Feb 1997

Critical Race Praxis: Race Theory And Political Lawyering Practice In Post-Civil Rights America, Eric K. Yamamoto

Michigan Law Review

At the end of the twentieth century, the legal status of Chinese Americans in San Francisco's public schools turns on a requested judicial finding that a desegregation order originally designed to dismantle a system subordinating nonwhites now invidiously discriminates against Chinese Americans. Brian Ho, Patrick Wong, and Hilary Chen, plaintiffs in Ho v. San Francisco Unified School District, represent "all [16,000] children of Chinese descent" eligible to attend San Francisco's public schools. Their high-profile suit, filed by small-firm attorneys, challenges the validity of a 1983 judicial consent decree desegregating San Francisco's schools. Approved in response to an NAACP class action …

The deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) gene, a candidate tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 18q21, encodes a neural cell adhesion molecule family protein that is most highly expressed in the nervous system. To address the hypothesis that DCC may play a role in glioma development and/or progression, we examined DCC expression by immunohistochemistry in 57 resected human astrocytic tumors. Overall, low-grade astrocytomas were predominantly DCC positive (15 of 16, or 94%), whereas high-grade tumors significantly less often expressed the DCC protein (27 of 41, or 66%; P = 0.03). We were able to directly assess the relationship between DCC expression …

The Fate And Disposition Of Metolachlor And 2, 4-D Under Irrigated Corn And Turf, Ghassan R. Musharrafieh, Richard C. Peralta, Robert W. Hill, Howard M. Deer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A field lysimeter experiment was conducted during the summers of 1993 and 1994, at the River Laboratory, Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The intent was to study the fate and disposition of metolachlor and 2,4-D in a one dimensional soil system. Metolachlor was applied to corn and 2,4-D was applied to turf. The mobility, persistence, and degradation of these herbicides were investigated in the field lysimeters using four irrigation treatment levels on corn and two irrigation levels on turf. The four irrigation levels applied to corn were 0, 30, 60, and 120 percent of potential evapotranspiration. The two irrigation levels …

The Quintessential Best Case For "Takings" Compensation - A Pragmatic Approach To Identifying The Elements Of Land-Use Regulations That Present The Best Case For Government Compensation, Paul J. Boudreaux Feb 1997

The Quintessential Best Case For "Takings" Compensation - A Pragmatic Approach To Identifying The Elements Of Land-Use Regulations That Present The Best Case For Government Compensation, Paul J. Boudreaux

San Diego Law Review

What types of land use regulation require compensation to land owners continues to bedevil trial judges, landowners and agents of government. This article proposes a "best case" model for compensation focusing on fairness. The best case for compensating a landowner whose property value is diminished by a land use regulation is where the regulation imposes adverse effects on a small number of landowners; entails widely distributed benefits to the community; the landowner appears relatively "innocent" with regard to public harms associated with the land use. The author applies his proposal to such common land use regulations as zoning, Wetland regulation, …

Reaching A New Audience, John Cobourn, Sue Donaldson Feb 1997

Reaching A New Audience, John Cobourn, Sue Donaldson

Journal of Extension

The challenges of reaching a new audience can be met by creating a flexible program with a many-pronged approach, including a variety of teaching techniques. The Small Ranch Water Quality Program, to teach suburban residents how to manage their property to decrease non-point source pollution, is presented as an example of a successful attempt to reach a diverse audience. Key elements include identification of the idiosyncrasies, needs and desires of the new audience, development of curriculum to meet those specific needs, using the audience to help develop the program, and providing many different types of learning opportunities.

Counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Device Controller Defection Filter Simulation And Canine Experiments, Carl Edward Werner Jan 1997

Counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Device Controller Defection Filter Simulation And Canine Experiments, Carl Edward Werner

Dissertations

Electronic control systems for counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Devices (CADs) are an essential part of cardiac assistance. Synchronization of the counterpulsation CAD controller with the cardiac cycle is critical to the efficacy of the CAD. The robustness of counterpulsation CAD controllers varies with the ability of the CAD controller to properly trigger on aortic pressure (Pa) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals for sinusoid rhythms, non-sinusoid rhythms and non-ideal signals resulting from surgical intervention. An analog-to-digital converter and digital-to-analog converter based CAD controller development platform was devised on a 33Mhz PC-AT.

Counterpulsation Pa systolic rise and dicrotic notch detectors were demonstrated with a …

Massively Parallel Reasoning In Transitive Relationship Hierarchies, Yugyung Lee Jan 1997

Massively Parallel Reasoning In Transitive Relationship Hierarchies, Yugyung Lee

Dissertations

This research focuses on building a parallel knowledge representation and reasoning system for the purpose of making progress in realizing human-like intelligence. To achieve human-like intelligence, it is necessary to model human reasoning processes by programs. Knowledge in the real world is huge in size, complex in structure, and is also constantly changing even in limited domains. Unfortunately, reasoning algorithms are very often intractable, which means that they are too slow for any practical applications. One technique to deal with this problem is to design special-purpose reasoners. Many past Al systems have worked rather nicely for limited problem sizes, but …

Oxidative Response Of Immobilized Bovine Blood To The Model Pollutant Phenol, Michael George Nickey Jan 1997

Oxidative Response Of Immobilized Bovine Blood To The Model Pollutant Phenol, Michael George Nickey

Theses

The primary purpose of this work is to determine if bovine blood can be studied in an immobilized cell bioreactor to determine if a phenol induced oxygen releasing optimum exists. This method of study has the potential to be used to determine what effects xenobiotics have on the oxidative activities of blood.

Three blood fractions containing approximately 21, 44, and 70% red blood cells (RBCs) were immobilized and placed in a recirculating bioreactor. These fractions were exposed injections of 0 ml, 3 ml, or 10 ml amounts of 2000 ppm phenol. The most active fraction was the 21% red cell …

Catalytic Control Of Nitric Oxide With Gaseous Or Solid Reducing Materials, Xiaoyong Tang Jan 1997

Catalytic Control Of Nitric Oxide With Gaseous Or Solid Reducing Materials, Xiaoyong Tang

Theses

Air pollution from mobile sources is an increasingly serious problem throughout most of the industrialized would. Diesel powered vehicles, because of their higher thermal efficiency, tend to emit less carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons than gasoline vehicles, but emit significant quantities of NOx. Therefore, it is essential to develop improved emission control equipment in diesel engines. A fixed bed catalytic reactor was used to study the decomposition of NO and the reduction of NO to N2 by different reductants that can be found in diesel exhaust, such as hydrocarbons, CO and elemental carbon over different catalysts. The …

Safety Guidelines For Occupational Hazards To The Reproductive System, Laverne Raquel Ogieste Jan 1997

Safety Guidelines For Occupational Hazards To The Reproductive System, Laverne Raquel Ogieste

Theses

Most workers are unaware of the hazards to the reproductive system that surround them in the workplace, and therefore, few if any precautions are taken to avoid unnecessary exposures. In this research, safety guidelines were developed in order to eliminate such dangers from occurring or reoccurring.

These guidelines were developed by reviewing case studies of occupational hazards to the reproductive system, including federal laws and regulations related to safety within the workplace. The following forms were also developed in order to formulate suitable safety guidelines for occupational hazards to the reproductive system. They are: an occupational reproductive survey, a reproductive …
