Nebraska Bird Review

The Official List of the Birds of Nebraska was last published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988). That list included 406 species whose occurrence in Nebraska had been documented to the satisfaction of the NOU Records Committee at that time, following the sequence and nomenclature as outlined by the American ornithologists' Union (1983, 1985, 1987). The present list includes 427 species based on all changes to the Official List of the Birds of Nebraska as determined by the NOU Records Committee (Mollhoff 1989; Grenon 1990,1991; Gubanyi 1996a, 1996b, 1997; Brogie 1997), as well as sequence and taxonomic changes made by …

Consideraciones Sobre El Género Opatrinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Pedinini) En Cuba, Puerto Rico, Y Jamaica., Orlando H. Garrido, Esteban Gutierrez Mar 1997

Consideraciones Sobre El Género Opatrinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Pedinini) En Cuba, Puerto Rico, Y Jamaica., Orlando H. Garrido, Esteban Gutierrez

Insecta Mundi

After obtaining fresh material of Opatrinus puertoricenis P uerto Rico a cornparison was done with a large series of . armasi. This latter taxon had been previously compared with Marcuzzi's original description, mainly based on his illustration of male genitalia from Jamaica reckoned to be O. puertoricenis. Genitalia from 0. p. puertoricenis (from Puerto Rico) and 0. armasi, proved to be quite alike. Also morphological characters of the two populations are not very distinct, offering differentiations better considered under subspecific rather than specific level. Therefore, we propose considering 0. arrrzasi Garrido and Gutiérrez, 1994, as a subspecies associated …

Revisión Del Género Endémico Cubano Trimytantron (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Trimytini),Con La Descripción De Ocho Nuevas Especies, Orlando H. Garrido, Esteban Gutierrez Mar 1997

Revisión Del Género Endémico Cubano Trimytantron (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Trimytini),Con La Descripción De Ocho Nuevas Especies, Orlando H. Garrido, Esteban Gutierrez

Insecta Mundi

A revision is provided for the Cuban endemic tenebrionid genus Trimytantron. Material of Ardoin's five previously described species (Trimytantron decui, poeyi, cubanum, vinai, and negrai) is compared with the extensive series of the senior author's collection (O.H.G). Eight new species are herein described and illustrated. Also their genitalia are illustrated, as well as some of the previously described species not illustrated by Ardoin in his original descriptions. Material from several eastern localities assigned to T. decui are not exactly identical, showing some variations at subspecific level. Although these variations are mentioned, they are not described. The …

Adjudication As Representation, Christopher J. Peters Mar 1997

Adjudication As Representation, Christopher J. Peters

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article sets forth an interpretive theory of adjudicative lawmaking according to which, under certain conditions, such lawmaking ensures constructive participation through interest representation and thus is not inherently nondemocratic. The author contends that the idea of ‘judicial activism,‘ courts deciding issues better left to political processes or substituting the personal ‘values‘ of judges for law, is based on the incorrect assumptions that courts are unconstrained and nonrepresentative. Instead, when adjudication operates in an archetypal way, it produces law in a manner similar to the parliamentary legislation process. Courts making law are constrained by the process of participatory decisionmaking--the production …

Characterization Of An Atp-Dependent Dna Ligase Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, C. Kiong Ho, James L. Van Etten, Stewart Shuman Mar 1997

Characterization Of An Atp-Dependent Dna Ligase Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, C. Kiong Ho, James L. Van Etten, Stewart Shuman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

We report that Chlorella virus PBCV-1 encodes a 298-amino-acid ATP-dependent DNA ligase. The PBCV-1 enzyme is the smallest member of the covalent nucleotidyl transferase superfamily, which includes the ATP-dependent polynucleotide ligases and the GTP-dependent RNA capping enzymes. The specificity of PBCV-1 DNA ligase was investigated by using purified recombinant protein. The enzyme catalyzed efficient strand joining on a singly nicked DNA in the presence of magnesium and ATP (Km, 75 μM). Other nucleoside triphosphates or deoxynucleoside triphosphates could not substitute for ATP. PBCV-1 ligase was unable to ligate across a 2-nucleotide gap and ligated poorly across a 1-nucleotide …

Differences In Reading Comprehension Between Learning Disabled And Non-Learning Disabled College Students On The Nelson-Denny Reading Test As Related To Question And Length Of Test, Heidi K. Jensen Mar 1997

Differences In Reading Comprehension Between Learning Disabled And Non-Learning Disabled College Students On The Nelson-Denny Reading Test As Related To Question And Length Of Test, Heidi K. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of unlimited time on the ability of college students with learning disabilities (LD) and without learning disabilities (NLD) to complete the comprehension subtest of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT), which under standard instructions is timed. Time effects were examined with relationship to question type (literal vs. implicit), total number correct, and reading time. The subjects were 12 NLD and 10 LD college, all attending the University of North Dakota. Computerized versions of the NDRT, Forms G and H recorded subjects’ reading rates, response times to questions, and question answers. The two tests were randomized …
