Effectiveness Of Grid Systems For Pheromone-Trapping Sparse Gypsy Moth Populations In Mountainous Terrain In The Intermountain West, Colleen Keyes May 1997

Effectiveness Of Grid Systems For Pheromone-Trapping Sparse Gypsy Moth Populations In Mountainous Terrain In The Intermountain West, Colleen Keyes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two field experiments determined an effective intertrap distance (ITD) for early detection and delimitation sparse gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae, Lymantria dispar L.) populations in mountainous terrain. This study found that current Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service trapping guidelines are not sufficient for early detection of small gypsy moth populations in mountainous terrain. Detection trapping in mountainous terrain should have an ITD of not more than 804 m. Delimiting trapping should use a grid design with an ITD of 152 m.

A related study determined natural adult male mortality in the climate of the intermountain West, which includes Utah, Nevada, …

Evolutionary Genetics Of Canyon Treefrogs (Hyla Arenicolor), Roy A. Murray May 1997

Evolutionary Genetics Of Canyon Treefrogs (Hyla Arenicolor), Roy A. Murray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Population genetics is the study of the mechanisms that cause genetic change in populations over time. Genetic changes may lead to both adaptive evolution and speciation. While the former process is fairly well understood, many questions remain unanswered with regard to the process of speciation. How important is population isolation in the process of speciation? How long must populations be isolated before speciation is complete? Are the genetic changes that take place during speciation caused mainly by natural selection or does genetic drift play a substantial role? Can genetic drift alone lead to reproductive isolation? These types of questions have …

The Cultural Perspective Of Albert Wendt's Novel Pouliuli, Fa'alafua L. Auva'a

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wendt's accomplishments as an artist of Polynesia and positions he held at different universities are presented in Chapter I. This marks the significant contributions he has made in different genres in which he has written, like novels, short stories, and poetry, that make him a major influence in the Pacific.

Chapter II analyzes the theoretical framework within the fa'a-Samoa in which a matai (chief) is presented, a revered office filled by respectable individuals. To make this point clear, I present the theoretical groundwork in Appendix A of how an individual becomes a matai.

Chapter III explores how Faleasa Osovae, …

Homology Among The Autosomal Chromosomes Of Boophilus Annulatus (Say) And B. Microplus (Canestrini), Bonnie S. Gunn May 1997

Homology Among The Autosomal Chromosomes Of Boophilus Annulatus (Say) And B. Microplus (Canestrini), Bonnie S. Gunn

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Autosomes of Boophilus annulatus and B. microplus were compared using C- and G-bands to establish the degree of homology. Karyotypes of both species consisted of 20 autosomes and an XX:XO sex determination system with the X being the largest chromosome. All chromosomes of B. annulatus were acrocentric with heterochromatin limited to centromeric regions. The B. microplus karyotype was acrocentric with one band of noncentromeric heterochromatin occurring in three chromosome pairs. Interspecific comparisons indicated seven pairs of G-band homologous autosomes and three G-band homologous pairs when added interstitial heterochromatin was considered. The number three chromosome of both species showed variation in …

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of Rio Grande Delta Ponds, Anna Maria Navarro May 1997

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of Rio Grande Delta Ponds, Anna Maria Navarro

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this study was to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates living in the vegetated margins of local ponds, to determine their relative abundances, and to construct a rapid bioassessment model. I collected macroinvertebrates seasonally from seven ponds in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Collection sites included: Moore Airfield, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Olmito Fish Hatchery. Twenty-eight samples were sampled and preserved at the University of Texas-Pan American. Seventy-six taxa were identified and were stored as a reference collection. Cluster analysis of the taxa and their relative abundances showed three distinct geographic patterns or regions. These patterns were verified …

Habitat Use And Activities Of The Piping Plover, Charadrius Melodus, Wintering On South Padre Island, Texas, Humberto Garza Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The Piping Plover, Charadrius melodus, is endangered in its breeding sites and threatened in its wintering sites. This migratory shorebird spends 3 to 4 months on northern U.S. and southern Canadian breeding sites and the remainder of the year in Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and southern U.S. wintering sites. Up to 2.4% of the estimated Piping Plover population remains for the 9 to 10 month non-breeding season on South Padre Island (S.P.I.). During the non-breeding season, I conducted censuses at 15 sites in the southern portion of South Padre Island to determine Piping Plover habitat preferences. Piping Plovers prefer bay …

"Freedom Of Assembly" And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History, Rachel Vorspan May 1997

"Freedom Of Assembly" And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History, Rachel Vorspan

San Diego Law Review

This Article explores the "right to passage" and its corollary, the nuisance doctrine of "obstruction of the highway" in modern English legal history. The author traces the origins of these doctrines and examines critical periods in history when the right to passage was used to cope with street demonstrations. She argues that the general pattern throughout history of under-enforcing obstruction law nourished a popular belief in a right to assemble that was inconsistent with the formal legal status of meetings. She concludes that since the 1960s, this has prompted increasing calls for formal recognition of "freedom of assembly."

Reflections On A Third Grade Social Studies Curriculum, Laura E. Gerrity May 1997

Reflections On A Third Grade Social Studies Curriculum, Laura E. Gerrity

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This curriculum study is a narrative account of a teacher and the social studies curriculum she uses with her third grade class. The curriculum is divided into two main parts. One is a study of the students' culture and family history which involves interviews with the children's parents, an examination of maps and literature from those cultures, and a description of the way the students experience the study through their writings, drawings, and conversation.

The second part of the study is an investigation of the students' neighborhood and community. Through interviews with community members, neighborhood walks, and their own observations, …

The Hole In The Code: Good Faith And Morality In Chapter 13, Bradley M. Elbein May 1997

The Hole In The Code: Good Faith And Morality In Chapter 13, Bradley M. Elbein

San Diego Law Review

Chapter 13 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code offers individuals an opportunity to discharge their indebtedness when faced with a catastrophic financial situation. This Article examines the Chapter 13 discharge through what the author finds to be its most important element: good faith. The author concludes that courts' focus on the good faith doctrine causes courts to defy the plain meaning of the Bankruptcy Code. This "hole in the Code" renders the Code unpredictable, and the author argues against courts that take on a moral analysis by applying good faith rather than strictly adhering to the plain meaning of the Bankruptcy …

The Chosen People In Our Wilderness, Susan P. Koniak May 1997

The Chosen People In Our Wilderness, Susan P. Koniak

Faculty Scholarship

Strangers there are among us, practicing with weapons for something they believe might come - something some of them believe should come. Militia men, patriots, self-proclaimed true Americans. Chosen people. What are we, members of the power elite, the academy, the legal intelligentsia - the other chosen people - to make of them? Sideshow freaks may titillate even a scholar, but they rarely, if ever, inform. Is there more here?

Along with the authors of Gathering Storm and Rural Radicals, I believe there is. Neither of these books sets out to convince lawyers or law professors in particular that …

Human Cloning — Should The United States Legislate Against It, George J. Annas, John Robertson May 1997

Human Cloning — Should The United States Legislate Against It, George J. Annas, John Robertson

Faculty Scholarship

Two weeks after Scottish researcher Ian Wilmut told the world in February that he had cloned an adult sheep, he went before the U.S. Senate to say that cloning humans would be unethical and "quite inhumane." He warned Congress, however, against acting rashly to adopt legislation that might stifle biological research.

Unlike Britain, Spain, Germany and Denmark, the United States has no national law that bans the cloning of humans, although President Clinton has ordered a ban on federal funding for human-cloning experiments. Whether there should be a legal ban is one issue before a presidential advisory panel.

As a …

Microevolution In Island Water Snakes, Richard B. King, R. Lawson May 1997

Microevolution In Island Water Snakes, Richard B. King, R. Lawson

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Examples presented demonstrate that evolutionary outcomes depend not only on those processes that operate within populations(e,g.,selection) but also on interactions (via gene flow) among populations. Factors affecting rates of gene flow are likely to produce evolutionary change even when within-population processes remain constant. These examples also illustrate that the combined effects of selection and gene flow are not restricted to organisms found on islands like those in western Lake Erie but may be important in any organism whose distribution spans a range of habitat types. As human activities produce changes in habitat characteristics and distribution (e.g., by fragmenting formerly continuous …

Paper Session Ii-C - Automated Military Space System Development And Technology Effectiveness, A. N. Sorensen Ph.D. Apr 1997

Paper Session Ii-C - Automated Military Space System Development And Technology Effectiveness, A. N. Sorensen Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Not since the end of World War II has the United States military experienced such major changes. The changes are being driven by both internal national factors, and external international Cold War downsizing. The specifics of what the changes are and the explicit forcing factors have been understood for some time. What has not been understood thoroughly, is how the United States military will continue to maintain personnel and hardware effectiveness in such a dynamic environment, specifically amidst a steadily diversifying threat base and declining acquisition budget.

Recently, there have been several efforts directly concerned with how the U.S. military …

Annotated Bibliography Of Asian Literature, Lisa Brownback Apr 1997

Annotated Bibliography Of Asian Literature, Lisa Brownback

Theses and Dissertations

Many changes have happened in the world. One change is the growing curiosity of other cultures. One way to learn about other cultures is through literature. The purpose of this thesis is to present an annotated bibliography of Asian literature for the public library. Since Asia covers a large area, this thesis will only view literature from India, China, and Japan.

Two public libraries, two college libraries, and reference books were examined to get an impression of books that should be in a public library. To be able to pick constantly the best books, a library needs a selection policy. …
