The Sickness Unto Death: Søren Kierkegaard's Categories Of Despair, Michael A. Harsh May 1997

The Sickness Unto Death: Søren Kierkegaard's Categories Of Despair, Michael A. Harsh

Student Work

This dissertation examines and explicates S0ren Kierkegaard's categories of despair as found in The Sickness Unto Death, in order to clarify his psychological framework and make his analysis more accessible to practitioners of psychotherapy. In so doing, this dissertation deciphers Kierkegaard's theory in depth and presents and critiques the views of other theorists who have referenced Kierkegaard's categories of despair. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the role and limitations of a therapist who operates using Kierkegaard's schema.

Native Vegetation On Farms Survey 1996 : A Survey Of Farmers Attitudes To Native Vegetation And Landcare In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Suzanne Jenkins

Resource management technical reports

The Native Vegetation on Farms survey 1996 was performed to assess the attitudes of farmers to a number of issues related to existing native vegetation on farmland, the replanting of vegetation on farms and land degradation. Research has shown that it is important for a proportion of all farmland to have some native vegetation for ecological stability, to regulate hydrological processes and for long-term sustainability of farm production.

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery May 1997

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Most extant studies of organizational ethical decision making have been remiss in doing one or more of the following: (a) building theoretical foundations; (b) encompassing the individual. contextual, and issue-specific determinants impacting ethical judgments; (c) offering testable hypotheses; and/or (d) establishing methodological rigor. This study confronted those challenges aiming to understand the decision intentions of top managers in the metal finishing industry concerning the treatment of hazardous wastewater.

This study employed an extended version of Ajzen's (1988) theory of planned behavior. The theory accommodatingly modeled the individual (i.e., attitudes, self-efficacy. personal moral obligation), contextual (subjective norms, organizational climate, and financial …

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection Of Cells And Tissues From The Upper And Lower Human Female Reproductive Tract, Alexandra L. Howell, Robert D. Edkins, Sherry E. Rier, Grant R. Yeaman, Judy E. Stern, Michael W. Fanger, Charles R. Wira

Dartmouth Scholarship

Viable tissue sections and isolated cell cultures from the human fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, and vaginal mucosa were examined for susceptibility to infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). We examined infectivity by using the monocytotropic strain HIV-1JR-FLand several primary isolates of HIV-1 obtained from infected neonates. HIV-1 infection was measured by p24 production in short-term culture and by immunofluorescence detection of HIV-1 Nef and p24 proteins by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Three-color immunofluorescence was used to phenotype HIV-infected cells within tissue sections from each site. Our findings indicate that epithelial, stromal, and dendritic cells and cells …

The Relationship Between Observation And Total Aircraft And Simulator Training Times In Aviation Instruction, Scott P. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This study takes an initial examination of the paired student flight training methodology used by the Aviation Department of the University of North Dakota's Center for Aerospace Sciences from the standpoint of observational learning. An analysis was performed on the relationship between observation time and total flight and simulator time logged by students in the completion of particular flight courses. The study involved student flight records from four flight courses ranging from primary to advanced pilot training, over a time period from the Fall of 1994 to the Spring of 1996.

It was found that only one of the relationships …

Cultural Criticism Of Law, Guyora Binder, Robert Weisberg May 1997

Cultural Criticism Of Law, Guyora Binder, Robert Weisberg

Journal Articles

Professors Binder and Weisberg expound a "cultural criticism" of law that views law as an arena for composing, representing, and contesting identity, and that treats identity as constitutive of the interests that motivate instrumental action. They explicate this critical method by reference to "New Historicist" literary criticism, postmodern social theory, and Nietzchean aesthetics. They illustrate this method by reviewing recent scholarship of two kinds: First, they explore how legal disputes take on expressive meaning for parties and observers against the background of legal norms regulating or recognizing identities. Second, they examine "readings" of the representations of character, credit, and value …

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Information And Intervention Strategies For School, Home, And Therapeutical Settings, Mindy Dawn Anderson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I was introduced into the world of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome winter quarter, 1996. My goals for that year included researching this topic in order to understand what it was physically, behaviorally, and on a cognitive level. My assignment involved writing a research paper around those characteristics, along with the development of their speech and language, presenting my findings to my classmates, and competing at the USU Scholar's Day competition in May of 1996. I received 2nd place at this competition. During the summer of that year, I researched FAS more to receive the needed resources to compile an annotated bibliography …

Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In The Intestines Of Neonatal Calves, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Brad T. Bosworth, William C. Cray Jr., Harley W. Moon

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Cattle are an important reservoir of Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 strains, foodborne pathogens that cause hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. EHEC O157:H7 strains are not pathogenic in calves >3 weeks old. Our objective was to determine if EHEC O157:H7 strains are pathogenic in neonatal calves. Calves(A/E) lesions in both the large and small intestines by 18 h postinoculation. The severity of diarrhea and inflammation, and also the frequency and extent of A/E lesions, increased by 3 days postinoculation. We conclude that EHEC O157:H7 strains are pathogenic in neonatal calves. The neonatal calf model is …

Tnt-Contaminated Soils Remediation For Volunteer Army Ammunitions Plant, Janice Tevonia Russell Horn May 1997

Tnt-Contaminated Soils Remediation For Volunteer Army Ammunitions Plant, Janice Tevonia Russell Horn

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Many facilities involved in the production of munitions, or with a history of munitions production or storage, are faced with the remediation of residual explosives in soil, groundwater and process wastewater. This requirement has become particularly prevalent with the closing of many military installations across the country. The Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (V AAP) is a 6,681 acre Government owned and contractor-operated facility for the production and storage of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Two (2) technologies were investigated for TNT (nitroaromatic explosive) contaminated soils remediation. The technologies are phytoremediation and thermal incineration. Phytoremediation is an in-site wetlands-type remediation which uses plants. Thermal …

Developmental Taxonomy And Distribution Of Paralarval Squid From The Florida Current, Carrie Leeonne Adams May 1997

Developmental Taxonomy And Distribution Of Paralarval Squid From The Florida Current, Carrie Leeonne Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Distribution patterns of paralarval squid across the continental shelf of Florida were examined based on five years of collections. Squid occurrence patterns were described in relation to coastal, intermediate, and Florida Current (Gulf Stream) water masses by comparing horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of squid species to physical-chemical distribution patterns Twenty-six squid taxa were collected in this study. Representative taxonomic descriptions and illustrations of all taxa were produced to serve as an identification aid for the paralarval squid from the Florida shelf. Patterns of species composition among stations were analyzed with cluster analysis based on four sampling approaches. Species distribution …

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman May 1997

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is a multicultural place. With its ever increasing cultural and ethnic diversity, multicultural education is important. Since the visual arts have always been produced and perceived within cultures and offer students unique opportunities to explore human expression and experience, the analysis of an introductory art course taught within a multicultural context at a Midwestern university was a sensible starting point. This was especially timely since little research exists in relation to the visual arts taught from a multicultural perspective at the higher education level, and more theoretical works regarding multicultural visual arts exist than do actual studies. …

Distribution And Success Of Galling Insects On Upland Willow (Salix Humilis) In Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Erik J. Harris May 1997

Distribution And Success Of Galling Insects On Upland Willow (Salix Humilis) In Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Erik J. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

A comparison was made of the distribution of six galling insects on varying-sized shoots and different ages of their host plant, Salix humilis. Survivorship of the most numerous galler, Iteyomia salicifolia, was used to determine if host use patterns were correlated with galler success. In northern Minnesota, all six gallers were non-randomly distributed among shoots of different length; each occurred at greater numbers than expected on the longest shoots. Two of the six gallers were at higher densities on juvenile ramets of S. humilis, than on mature ones. Densities did not vary between juvenile and mature clones.

A comparison was …

The Benefits And Costs Of Regulatory Reforms For Superfund, W. Kip Viscusi, James T. Hamilton May 1997

The Benefits And Costs Of Regulatory Reforms For Superfund, W. Kip Viscusi, James T. Hamilton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The current policy approach used in the Superfund program is a peculiar halfway house. EPA devotes substantial effort to identifying chemicals at a site and ascertaining their potential risks. It also assesses the costs of a range of remedies in considerable detail. However, many key elements are missing in the agency's analyses. There is no explicit consideration of the size of the population at risk. Risks to a single individual have the same weight as risks to a large exposed population. Actual and hypothetical exposures to chemicals receive equal weight so that risks to a person who, in the future, …

Harrison County, Iowa: Aspects Of Life From 1920 To 1930, Gary D. Dixon May 1997

Harrison County, Iowa: Aspects Of Life From 1920 To 1930, Gary D. Dixon

Student Work

This is an examination of Harrison County, Iowa, during the decade from 1920 to 1930. Because farming was the major source of income, agricultural conditions are a major part of this story . So too are the changes which the 1920s brought to the towns of Harrison County. The thesis will also look at the social activities and political issues of the county’s citizens, and how these disparate elements of life interacted to form a more complex picture than one might at first think likely. The 1920s was a time of profound change in the nation, and Harrison County was …

Batuko And Funana: Musical Traditions Of Santiago, Republic Of Cape Verde, Susan Hurley-Glowa

School of Music Dissertations and Theses

"Batuko and Funana: Musical Traditions of Santiago, Cape Verde Islands" is primarily based on an ethnographic survey emphasizing music and culture I conducted with a people of African descent living in Santiago, one of the Cape Verdean islands. This group of people is informally referred to as the Badius. I undertook the field research for the project in Cape Verde in June and July, 1991 and from October 1992 through August 1993. Before, between, and after those trips I did additional field research with people from Santiago living in the extensive Cape Verdean communities of Southern New England.

In this …
