Environmental And Outdoor Education For The 21st Century, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

As we rapidly approach a new century it seems appropriate to assess the status of environmental and outdoor education and seek direction for the future. One way to do this is to ask counsel of professionals in the field. Taproot editor Charles Yaple interviewed one of the nation's leading environmental and outdoor educators: Dr. Clifford Knapp, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Outdoor Teacher Education at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Knapp has authored more than 100 articles and several books including Just Beyond the Classroom and Lasting Lessons: A Teachers Guide to Reflecting on Experience. His teaching and scholarly …

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard May 1997

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability for wetlands to purify contaminated water is not a new concept. Natural wetlands have been cleansing water within our environment for ages. After studying the process of natural wetlands the same concept was applied to municipal waste. It is the success of constructed wetlands treating municipal waste that created the new idea for the application of a wetland system to treat wastewater from livestock facilities. Through proper design and management, constructed wetlands may be useful for reducing the nutrient concentration of waste (Rieck el al., 1996). Taking into consideration the higher nutrient loads of livestock waste, the same …

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

The Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (CCWHC) was established in 1992 as an organization among Canada's 4 veterinary colleges, with a mandate to apply veterinary medicine to wildlife management and conservation in Canada. A major function of the CCWHC is nation-wide surveillance of wild animal diseases. Disease surveillance is conceived as consisting of 4 different activities: detection, diagnosis, information management, and use of information. In the CCWHC surveillance program, detection of disease is carried out by a wide range of professional and avocational field personnel, and much effort is expended to stimulate and support this activity. Diagnosis is done by …

Polar Distribution Of Neurofilaments In A Nonspiking Central Nervous System Neuron, David Dale Cole May 1997

Polar Distribution Of Neurofilaments In A Nonspiking Central Nervous System Neuron, David Dale Cole

Biology

Immunolabelling of phosphorylated and nonphosphorylated neurofilaments in teleost retinal horizontal cells, which are nonspiking neurons, is described. Light microscopy (postembedding immunolabelling) of retinal tissue sections revealed nonphosphorylated neurofilaments localized to regions where horizontal cell axon terminals, dendrites, and somata are located. In contrast, phosphoneurofilaments were localized to regions where axons and axon terminals of various retinal neurons, including horizontal cells, are found, as in typical spiking central nervous system neurons. Electron microscopy (preembedding immunolabelling) demonstrated that phosphoneurofilaments were localized to cone horizontal cell axons and axon terminals. Immunolabelling of primary cell cultures, however, revealed that axon-specific distribution of phosphoneurofilaments in …

Effects Of Plant Architecture On The Foraging Behavior And Prey Capture Success Of Two Generalist Predators Attacking The Russian Wheat Aphid, Teresa L. Clark May 1997

Effects Of Plant Architecture On The Foraging Behavior And Prey Capture Success Of Two Generalist Predators Attacking The Russian Wheat Aphid, Teresa L. Clark

Biology

This research investigated the effects of plant architecture on the foraging behavior and prey capture success of two generalist predators of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko). One study examined plant architectural effects on the behavior of a native predator, the common green lacewing, Chrysoperla plorabunda Fitch; a second study examined host plant effects on larvae and adults of the fourteen-spotted ladybird beetle, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.), which is native to Eurasia and has been released in the United States for potential control of D. noxia. Behavioral observations of each of these predators were conducted on two architecturally diverse …

Hnk-1 Immunoreactivity In In Situ Adult Teleost Retina, Kie Hoon Jung May 1997

Hnk-1 Immunoreactivity In In Situ Adult Teleost Retina, Kie Hoon Jung

Biology

To identify HNK-1 bearing molecules, anti-HNK-1 was used to probe adult hybrid bass retina, including mature, central retina and the circumferential germinal margin (CGM), where new cells are constantly added to the neural circuitry. The HNK-1 antigen was heavily distributed in both of the plexiform (synaptic) layers, in tufts of Müller cell microvilli at the outer limiting membrane, throughout the optic fiber layer, and in tubular processes surrounding cone horizontal cells in the inner nuclear layer. A differential fixation scheme suggested that the Müller cell microvillar and tubular process HNK-1 immunoreactivity was due primarily to glycoproteins, with the remainder possibly …

Hybrid Bass Retinal Cells In Situ And In Vitro: Structure And Immunocytochemistry, Kyeongsuk Ki May 1997

Hybrid Bass Retinal Cells In Situ And In Vitro: Structure And Immunocytochemistry, Kyeongsuk Ki

Biology

The morphologies of intact retina and acutely isolated retinal neurons are described for a relatively newcomer model for studies of visual physiology, the hybrid bass (Morone chrysops x M. saxatilus). These features are indistinguishable from the white bass (M. chrysops) at the light microscopic level. In situ immunolocalization patterns for several glial and neuronal markers also match previous work in the white bass. Carbonic anhydrase is found in retinal layers corresponding to Müller (glial) cells and horizontal cells; glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and glutamine synthetase are found in Müller cells only; and the intermediate M, …

Secondary Reproductive Strategies Of The Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Assessed By Dna Fingerprinting And Egg Physiognomy, Diane L. Rowe May 1997

Secondary Reproductive Strategies Of The Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Assessed By Dna Fingerprinting And Egg Physiognomy, Diane L. Rowe

Biology

Extra-pair fertilization, a secondary breeding strategy, was detected in the eastern kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus) using multi-locus DNA fingerprinting. I assessed the genetic parentage of 20 broods in a population of kingbirds in central New York. Two DNA probes were used to test for exclusion of nestlings as true offspring of one or both social parents. Band-sharing coefficients and the number of novel bands were used to discern which parent was not a first-degree relative of the nestling in question. No cases of conspecific brood parasitism or quasi-parasitism were documented. However, extra-pair paternity was found to be very common, …

Superoxide Dismutase And Catalase In Trichoderma Harzianum, A Biological Control Fungus Of Rhizoctonia Solani Disease Of Sugar Beet, June Inez Pounder May 1997

Superoxide Dismutase And Catalase In Trichoderma Harzianum, A Biological Control Fungus Of Rhizoctonia Solani Disease Of Sugar Beet, June Inez Pounder

Biology

A strain of Trichoderma harzianum (referred to as Tex) and its chemically generated mutant, T95, produced antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and catalase. The mutant and wild type had similar enzyme activity levels but differed in isozyme patterns and response to exogenous activated oxygen species. Superoxide dismutases had manganese and copper-zinc prosthetic groups, determined by selective inactivation with sodium azide, potassium cyanide, diethyldithiocarbamate, and hydrogen peroxide. Catalases from Tex and T95 were inhibited by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. Antioxidant enzymes may be important in survival of T. harzianum and its effective biocontrol of root diseases. In its role as a biocontrol agent, T. harzianum …

Plant- Versus Predator-Mediated Interactions Between Cereal Aphids On A Shared Host Plant, Erin Bergeson May 1997

Plant- Versus Predator-Mediated Interactions Between Cereal Aphids On A Shared Host Plant, Erin Bergeson

Biology

This research investigates plant- and predator-mediated effects of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) on the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko). I combined a suite of population-level experiments with behavioral observations to determine whether the two aphids interacted principally through a common host, crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum [Fisher ex Link] Schultes), or a common predator, larvae of the green lacewing (Chrysoperla plorabunda [Fitch]). The population-level experiments revealed some evidence of host-mediated interspecific competition but only at extremely high aphid densities (>2000 individuals per greenhouse seedling). In addition, some of these experiments suggested that the bird …

Farmsteads As Mirrors Of Cultural Adjustments And Change: The Ukrainian Canadian Experience, James W. Darlington May 1997

Farmsteads As Mirrors Of Cultural Adjustments And Change: The Ukrainian Canadian Experience, James W. Darlington

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Farmsteads reflect more than the nature and health of agricultural activity on individual farms and across geographic regions; they provide a reliable record of other aspects of cultural and economic adjustment and change. This paper considers the farmsteads constructed by the Ukrainian immigrants and their descendants who settled in one district of the Canadian prairies beginning in 1896. A field survey of four townships reveals that between the time of initial settlement and the present four distinct generations of farm structures were erected. These generations of buildings-labeled here pioneer, traditional, transitional, and modern provide clear evidence of the economic progress …

Review Of Amphibians And Reptiles Of New Mexico By William G. Degenhardt, Charles W. Painter, And Andrew H. Price, Jeffrey R. Parmalee

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Each year field guides and regional books with varying degrees of usefulness and new information are published. Such books can be ranked on a continuum between made-for-the-public identification guides to true scientific contributions. This massive work on the reptiles and amphibians of New Mexico certainly fits into the latter category. It is a summation of a tremendous amount of the authors' research, which will be useful for biologists looking for complete information concerning the 123 species of reptiles and amphibians from this state and throughout the Southwest. It follows in the tradition of data-rich guides such as The Salamanders of …

Review Of Retracing Major Stephen H. Long's Expedition: The Itinerary And Botany By George J. Goodman And Cheryl A. Lawson, Robert B. Kaul May 1997

Review Of Retracing Major Stephen H. Long's Expedition: The Itinerary And Botany By George J. Goodman And Cheryl A. Lawson, Robert B. Kaul

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Earlier expeditions made incidental collections of plants and animals in Louisiana Territory, but the Long Expedition of 1820 was the first deliberately staffed with scientists assigned to that task. Authorized by President Monroe and Secretary of War Calhoun, the Expedition was directed to document plant and animal life and geology in the intimidating country between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains and to find the source of the Platte and Red Rivers in the mountains. All this was to be done quickly and, in fact, took only 100 days, June 6-September 13, 1820. Starting near present-day Omaha, the Expedition …

Glide Path To An "Inclusionary Rule": How Expansion Of The Good Faith Exception Threatens To Fundamentally Change The Exclusionary Rule, James P. Fleissner May 1997

Glide Path To An "Inclusionary Rule": How Expansion Of The Good Faith Exception Threatens To Fundamentally Change The Exclusionary Rule, James P. Fleissner

Mercer Law Review

During recent political debates over the federal budget deficit, it became fashionable to speak of a "glide path" to a balanced budget. Advocates of a budget plan would plan certain tax rates and spending limits, factor in a set of economic assumptions, and graph a swooping path of declining deficits over several years. Needless to say, that sort of exercise in prediction does not involve the sort of odds that would inspire confidence in a gambler. The accuracy of the beguiling graph, of course, depends on whether tax and spending commitments are kept and whether a host of economic assumptions …

Legal Writing As A Kind Of Philosophy, Joel R. Cornwell May 1997

Legal Writing As A Kind Of Philosophy, Joel R. Cornwell

Mercer Law Review

Post-structuralist theories of textual meaning have been integrated into legal education in various ways, notably through the influence of the Critical Legal Studies movement. Ironically, legal writing courses, the portion of the first-year curriculum ostensibly allotted to techniques of dissecting and manipulating language, have largely ignored the insights of analytical philosophy and literary deconstruction indirectly appropriated in other courses. The standard models remain algorithmic, reinforcing a conservative view of writing as an applied lexigraphic skill, essentially void of the substance taught in nonwriting courses. This conceptual disjunction between writing and thought engenders and feeds the attitude that legal writing courses …
