Vcu Voice (1997-05-05)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
Painting Meditation On The Human Form, Hillary Ellen Kane
Painting Meditation On The Human Form, Hillary Ellen Kane
Senior Scholar Papers
The arching limb of a tree defined a periphery of space from which the gentle curve of a sleeping figure arose in my mind, barely emerging from the surrounding atmosphere (fig. 1). This painting, painted in the fall of 1995, marked my initial interest in the human figure as a subject of formidable intrigue, challenge and inspiration. The human form, by its immediate relationship to a human audience, posed a source of emotive expression and psychological introspection that I felt could strike a resonant cord -in the sensitivity of the viewers. Admiringly poring over the works of Kathe Kollowitz, Gustav …

Law Libraries And The Layperson: A Bibliography Of Self-Help Books, Kristen M. Mckeaney
Theses and Dissertations
Although the goal of a comprehensive legal library is to be a resource to professionals and the general public, the issue of providing legal assistance to laypersons via the library is a complex one. Compiling the legal resources to benefit the lay public is challenging. This paper attempts to systematically identify and suggest resources following pre-set criteria of affordability, content usefulness, timeliness and reasonableness of management.
The primary form of this paper is a bibliography following a subject specific format. The bibliography is further defined into sections of legal reference books, internet sites, legal directories, general references and agencies. The …

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin
Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin
Honors Theses
The green alga Volvox carteri exhibits a virtual absence of protein synthesis in the dark, but begins synthesizing proteins necessary for growth and development almost immediately after exposure to the light. The regulation of protein synthesis in this system is known to be translational since extracts prepared in the dark have identical pools and quantities of mRNA as extracts prepared in the light (Kirk and Kirk, 1983). Exploration of the mechanism of translational regulation has led us to consider the importance of signal transduction pathways. By using a variety of commercially available drugs that affect specific components of known signaling …

Celluloid Blackness : Race, Modernity, And The Conflicted Roots Of American Cinema (1915-1939), Lincoln Farr
Honors Theses
Introduction: "The Problem of the Twentieth Century" In a full page interview in the New York Times on May 29, 1912, the Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Carl G. Jung told the American people, "It seems to me that you are about to discover yourselves. You have discovered everything else-all the land of this continent; all the resources, all the hidden things of nature."Jung used the interview to address the American people, at a moment which he somehow recognized as crucial in the development of human civilization. America, the "tragic" country which he struggled to comprehend, would soon become the harbinger of …

A Study Of The N-Body Problem In Celestial Mechanics For College Students, John Atsu-Swanzy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study is to investigate simple solutions of the many-body problem otherwise known as the n-body problem. The study focuses on elementary solutions of the n-body problem that can be understood by undergraduate students and college preparatory students of applied. mathematics.
Historical origins of the problems were traced to the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks. Further development and interest dated back to the time of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and finally to Newton who proposed its modern form.
Analytical and numerical solutions of specific n-body problems were solved to demonstrate solvability of certain types of n-body problems. Analytical …

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine
Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system which serves as a model for the human disease multiple sclerosis. We demonstrate here that encephalitogenic T cells, transduced with a retroviral gene, construct to express interleukin 4, and can delay the onset and reduce the severity of EAE when adoptively transferred to myelin basic protein-immunized mice. Thus, T lymphocytes transduced with retroviral vectors can deliver "regulatory cytokines" in a site-specific manner and may represent a viable therapeutic strategy for the treatment of autoimmune disease.

Paper Session Iii-B - Measurements Of Oxygen In Biological & Medical Experiments, Glenn M. Cohen Ph.D., Fredric M. Ham, David L. Grisell
Space Congress® Proceedings
Since the maintenance of the appropriate levels of oxygen is essential for ensuring the success of many of the specialized experiments in space missions, such as tissue culture experiments, the continuous monitoring of partial pressures of oxygen provides important data. We are developing optical methods of monitoring not only oxygen but also many dissolved constituents in blood and tissue culture solutions. The optical system uses tiny optical fibers, which easily fit inside a fine-gauged needle, for monitoring each specimen. Moreover, the beam can be split so that multiple specimens can be monitored simultaneously. The same optical technology can also be …

Paper Session Iii-D - Physiological And Genetic Changes To E. Coli Induced By Exposure To Lead - A Two Year Study, Ashley M. Cimino
Space Congress® Proceedings
It’s been proven that concentrations of lead severely harm people - primarily children. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not continuous exposure to lead nitrate concentrations of 100 parts per billion (ppb), 200 ppb, or 300 ppb will produce mutation in Escherichia coli DNA over many generations. The hypothesis formulated was that, over time, continuous exposure to lead nitrate concentrations will produce a harmful mutation in Escherichia coli and reduce the amount of square centimeters of bacterial growth.
Lead is a bluish - gray element found underground that can be obtained by mining the ore. Pure …

Isolation Of A Cdna Encoding A Kex2-Like Endoprotease With Homology To Furin From The Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans, Eduardo Gomez-Saladin, Anne E. Luebke, David L. Wilson, Ian M. Dickerson
Biology Articles and Papers
A cDNA was isolated from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans that encodes an endoprotease which is a member of the Kex2 family of serine endoproteases. Degenerate oligonucleotide primers were designed based on conserved regions within the active sites of known Kex2-like endoproteases, and were used for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of poly(A)+RNA isolated from C. elegans. A PCR product was isolated that had homology to the active sites of known furin endoproteases, and was used as a probe to screen a C. elegans cDNA library. A Kex2-like endoprotease (CelfurPC) which encoded a 692-amino-acid preproendoprotease, was identified. The …

Beyond The Threshold: Life In The New Russia, Amanda Sprang
Senior Scholar Papers
Amanda Sprang spent nine months, from September of 1995 to May of 1996, studying at Colby College's program in St. Petersburg, Russia. Through contacts made during previous trips to Russia in middle and high school, Amanda was able to quickly rekindle her old friendships and make new ones with many young Russians from different backgrounds. The following work is a collection of twelve essays about life in the New Russia. The essays are framed by a foreword and an epilogue that help place the entire work in a historical context. Although the theme of each essay emerges from a particular …
Amos 5:21-24: Religion, Politics, And The Latino Experience, C. Gilbero Romero
Amos 5:21-24: Religion, Politics, And The Latino Experience, C. Gilbero Romero
Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology
Pursuing insights from his book Hispanic Devotional Piety: Tracing the Biblical Roots, (1991), the author offers insights into ways in which connections between religion and politics, between acts of worship and deeds of justice, set forth in the book of the eighth-century B.C.E. prophet Amos, might nourish an understanding of the links between religion and politics in the contemporary experience of Latina/os. He stresses the positive function of Latino popular religion as a resource for self- determination and empowerment in the face of the oppression and marginalization that are the daily experience of so many Latinas and Latinos.

The Collotype: History, Process & Photographic Documentaion, Denis Defibaugh
Theses
Historically the producers of collotype printing have been secretive and taken a proprietary attitude toward the production of collotype prints. Therefore, knowledge about and information on the growth of the collotype industry has been minimal. Although the collotype process produces prints that are amoung the most beautiful and delicate of any graphic arts medium, collotypes presently are rarely produced commercially or even as an artistic medium. Eventually, the making of collotypes will be a lost art. The primary objective of this thesis was to produce a portfolio of photographic images which illustrates all of the production steps in the making …
Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Theses
Nowhere is there a single, exclusive publication containing biographies, type specimens, and photographs of the many women typeface designers. From source to source, one will usually find the same names of male typeface designers repeated. However, one must refer to many sources to compile a list of women typeface designers. In an age of rapid access to all sorts of reference information, it seems silly that one must be forced to search many sources and possibly never find all they are looking for. This thesis project provides a single reference source of women typeface designers and samples of their typefaces …
