Insurance, Ralph F. Simpson Dec 1997

Insurance, Ralph F. Simpson

Mercer Law Review

The volume of cases that reached the appellate courts of Georgia during this survey period was greater than last year. The courts decided slightly over fifty cases this year that dealt with insurance issues. Most of these cases originated from the trial courts on declaratory judgment actions. Indeed, over twenty of the cases reviewed in this Article are declaratory judgment actions. The current trend seems to be for the insurer to file a declaratory judgment action to determine coverage issues while attempting to stay the case on the merits that gave rise to those issues. The reason for this is …

Inhalation Toxicity Of (1→3)-Β-D-Glucan: Recent Advances, Birgitts Fogelmark, Margarets Sjöstrand, David Williams, Ragnar Rylander Dec 1997

Inhalation Toxicity Of (1→3)-Β-D-Glucan: Recent Advances, Birgitts Fogelmark, Margarets Sjöstrand, David Williams, Ragnar Rylander

ETSU Faculty Works

To investigate the effects of (1→3)-β-D-glucan after inhalation, animals were exposed to different forms of glucan and the number of lung lavage cells was determined 24 h after exposure. None of the different forms assayed caused any increase in cell numbers. In animals exposed to endotoxin, all types of cells were increased after 24 h. A simultaneous exposure to curdlan reduced this increase in a dose-related fashion. The results suggest that (1→3)-β-D-glucan-related acute injury to the lung is induced by mechanisms other than those induced by inflammagenic agents such as endotoxin.

Direct Demonstration Of Retroviral Recombination In A Rhesus Monkey, Dawn P. Wooley, Randall A. Smith, Susan Czajak, Ronald C. Desrosiers Dec 1997

Direct Demonstration Of Retroviral Recombination In A Rhesus Monkey, Dawn P. Wooley, Randall A. Smith, Susan Czajak, Ronald C. Desrosiers

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Recombination may be an important mechanism for increasing variation in retroviral populations. Retroviral recombination has been demonstrated in tissue culture systems by artificially creating doubly infected cells. Evidence for retroviral recombination in vivo is indirect and is based principally on the identification of apparently mosaic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 genomes from phylogenetic analyses of viral sequences. We infected a rhesus monkey with two different molecularly cloned strains of simian immunodeficiency virus. One strain of virus had a deletion in vpx and vpr, and the other strain had a deletion in nef. Each strain on its own induced low virus …

Layout For Visualizing Large Software Structures In 3d, Colin Ware, Glenn Franck, Monica Parkhi, Tim Dudley

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

There is increasing evidence that 3D visualization of complex structures has advantages over 2D visualization. While nested directed graphs are an important method of representing information in 2D or 3D, they must be effectively organized in order to be understood. Most work on graph layout has assumed that fully automatic layout is desirable. Through our work with graphs representing large software structures, we have found that, due to the importance of the semantic content, it is necessary to combine automatic layout with manual layout. This paper describes a system called GraphVisualizer3D, which was designed to help people understand large nested …

Calculation Of Breed Direct And Maternal Genetic Fractions And Breed Specific Direct And Maternal Heterozygosity For Crossbreeding Data, L. Dale Van Vleck Dec 1997

Calculation Of Breed Direct And Maternal Genetic Fractions And Breed Specific Direct And Maternal Heterozygosity For Crossbreeding Data, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Teaching, research, and herd breeding applications may require calculation of breed additive contributions for direct and maternal genetic effects and fractions of heterozygosity associated with breed specific direct and maternal heterosis effects. These coefficients can be obtained from the first NB rows of a pseudo numerator relationship matrix where the first NB rows represent fractional contributions by breed to each animal or group representing a specific breed cross. The table begins with an NB x NB identity matrix representing pure breeds. Initial animals or representative crosses must be purebreds or two-breed crosses. Parents of initial purebreds are represented by the …

Self-Love And Social Are The Same: Reflections On Autonomy, Autobiography, And The Responsible Self, Eugene R. August Dec 1997

Self-Love And Social Are The Same: Reflections On Autonomy, Autobiography, And The Responsible Self, Eugene R. August

University of Dayton Review

I begin with this question for a specific, local reason. When the Humanities Base theme of autonomy and responsibility is raised in the classroom, students frequently misperceive the terms as opposites: they see autonomy vs. responsibility. As a result, classroom discussions of this theme often go nowhere because the discussants have defined autonomy as one's right to do as one pleases and responsibility as a restriction imposed by those in power. Attempts to explore issues such as abortion, gun control, same-sex marriage, and physician-assisted suicide quickly become mired in the mono-theme of a debate between individual rights and social repression. …

Jane Addams On Autonomy And Responsibility, Marilyn Fischer

University of Dayton Review

In 1889 with her college friend, Ellen Gates Starr, Jane Addams opened "Hull House" on Chicago's Halsted Street, in an immigrant neighborhood of 18 nationalities. Reflecting on those early days, Addams remembered thinking that "… the mere foothold of a house, easily accessible, ample in space, hospitable, and tolerant in spirit … would be in itself a serviceable thing for Chicago. … Hull House was soberly opened on the theory that the dependence of classes on each other is reciprocal; and that as the social relation is essentially a reciprocal relation, it gives a form of expression that has peculiar …

Where Virtue Is Vice, And Vice Versa: The Themes Of Autonomy And Responsibility In The Work Of Ayn Rand, M. Therese Lysaught Dec 1997

Where Virtue Is Vice, And Vice Versa: The Themes Of Autonomy And Responsibility In The Work Of Ayn Rand, M. Therese Lysaught

University of Dayton Review

Ayn Rand was born Alice Rosenbaum to a Jewish family in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905. As many occupations were closed to Jews in this time and culture, her father followed the path of an entrepreneur, becoming a "self-made man," a pharmacist. Alice was twelve years old at the time of the Communist Revolution.

The Archbishop And A December Rose: The Lives Of Monsignor Romero And Jean Donovan As Examples Of Christian Discipleship, Janis L. Krugh Dec 1997

The Archbishop And A December Rose: The Lives Of Monsignor Romero And Jean Donovan As Examples Of Christian Discipleship, Janis L. Krugh

University of Dayton Review

"Roses in December," that beautiful metaphor Ana Carrigan used as the film's title to describe Jean Donovan and the three nuns — Maura Clarke, Ita Ford, and Dorothy Kazel — who were raped and murdered with her in EI Salvador on that fateful night of December 2, 1980, captures perfectly the sense of Jean Donovan's life. The rose, usually associated with love and beauty, certainly characterizes the beauty of her love for and her work with the Salvadoran people. The rose's bloom, however, lasts but a brief time, reminding us of the brevity of life in general, and of Donovan's …

The Relationship Between Subtalar And Knee Joint Function As A Possible Mechanism For Running Injuries, Nikolaos Stergiou, Barry T. Bates Dec 1997

The Relationship Between Subtalar And Knee Joint Function As A Possible Mechanism For Running Injuries, Nikolaos Stergiou, Barry T. Bates

Journal Articles

The purposes of the study were: (1) to evaluate the effects of different surfaces on the relationship between subtalar and knee joint function, and (2) to examine/explore alternative approaches to the evaluation of these relationships. Five subjects ran under four different surface conditions of various hardness, while both rear and sagittal view kinematic data were collected (200 Hz). Critical parameters describing the knee angle and rearfoot motion were examined in conjunction with a curve analysis technique which incorporated slope differences and curve correlations. A repeated measure ANOVA design (surface × subject) was used along with single subject procedures. The results …
