Relationships Between In Situ Protein Degradability And Grass Developmental Morphology, R. B. Mitchell, D. D. Redfearn, Lowell E. Moser, R. J. Grant, K. J. Moore, B. H. Kirch

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to determine the relationships between the morphological development and in situ ruminally degradable protein (RDP), ruminally undegradable protein (RUP), and microbial protein of two cool season grasses (intermediate wheatgrass and smooth bromegrass) and two warm season grasses (switchgrass and big bluestem). The initial growth of grass tillers grown near Mead, Nebraska was clipped at ground level six times during the 1992 growing season and morphologically classified. Mean stage was calculated. Forage was ground to pass a 2-mm screen and was incubated in ruminally fistulated steers for 16 h. The RUP was adjusted for microbial …

Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay Jun 1997

Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay

University of Dayton Review

Like so many of his contemporaries who experienced the historical calamity of the Third Reich, Heinrich Böll had ample opportunity to witness the physical and psychological coercion deployed by the National Socialists in establishing and maintaining their criminal regime. Moreover, as a writer, he possessed an acute understanding of the key ideological role which language played in manufacturing consent for Hitler's racist tyranny, not least via the insidious and all-embracing propaganda of the state-controlled media. It was the historical example of German fascism, therefore, which convinced Böll that ideology was pervasively present in language and that the written and spoken …

Symbolism And The Continuity Theory In Heinrich Böll's Novel Billard Um Halbzehn, Robert C. Conard Jun 1997

Symbolism And The Continuity Theory In Heinrich Böll's Novel Billard Um Halbzehn, Robert C. Conard

University of Dayton Review

Most problematic in reading Böll's Billiards is coming to terms with the novel's symbolism, its use of lambs and buffaloes to represent the oppressed and the oppressors of history. The prevailing criticism of these symbols is that they are simply "unconvincing" (W. J. Schwarz 37-38), are too "black and white," unable to deal with the complexity of the history of the periods presented (P.K. Kurz 26), inadequate to reveal the economic realities behind German militarism in the 20th century, suggest that the overpowering buffaloes are an evil beyond control (H. Haase 225), and according to H.J. Bernhard represent a rejection …

Netbags Revisited: Cultural Narratives From Papua New Guinea, Pamela J. Stewart, Andrew J. Strathern Jun 1997

Netbags Revisited: Cultural Narratives From Papua New Guinea, Pamela J. Stewart, Andrew J. Strathern

Pacific Studies

In this article we reconsider materials on netbags from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya, as well as other parts of Melanesia, arguing that understanding of them is best set into a framework of ideas regarding embodiment and processes of trope expansion. Starting from the equation of netbag and womb, we trace the ramifications of this object of material culture and its contemporary significance in a commodifying context. Main emphasis is placed on materials from the Melpa or Mount Hagen area of the Western Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea, with comparisons to the cultures of the …

A Statistical Analysis Of The Ceramics From The Dieffenderfer Site (20sj179), St. Joseph County, Michigan, Mark A. Steeby Jun 1997

A Statistical Analysis Of The Ceramics From The Dieffenderfer Site (20sj179), St. Joseph County, Michigan, Mark A. Steeby

Masters Theses

The Dieffenderfer site, located in Constantine Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan, is a multi-component site situated in the middle St. Joseph River valley. Calibrated radiocarbon dates from several features at the site suggest multiple re-use during the Late Woodland period from A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1400, with the most intensive occupations occurring during the 12th through 14th centuries. These dates are supported by a large Late Woodland ceramic assemblage in association with three spatially discrete activity areas; two of these activity loci are represented by housefloors, suggesting a degree of permanence by the residents.

A cluster analysis performed on the …

Coming To Terms With Heritability, Scott F. Stoltenberg Jun 1997

Coming To Terms With Heritability, Scott F. Stoltenberg

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The complex mechanisms of heredity are little appreciated by nonspecialists, in some measure, because of misunderstandings that are perpetuated when words used for technical terms have other, more widely understood, folk meanings. When a word has both technical and folk meanings, it is the responsibility of the specialist to avoid promoting confusion by either using extremely cautious and precise language when using the term or, in cases when confusion is inevitable, abandoning the term in favor of one without a widely understood folk meaning. The study of heredity is beset by such confusion, and the term heritability appears to be …

Fluoridation Of Public Water Systems: Valid Exercise Of State Police Power Or Constitutional Violation, Douglas A. Balog Jun 1997

Fluoridation Of Public Water Systems: Valid Exercise Of State Police Power Or Constitutional Violation, Douglas A. Balog

Pace Environmental Law Review

The addition of fluoride to public water systems is naively accepted by most Americans as a purported method of reducing tooth decay, but the toxic properties of fluoride and its effect on the human body are virtually unbeknownst to the public. Many lawsuits have been brought over the last thirty years seeking to enjoin the artificial fluoridation of public water, but courts have always upheld the statutes as a valid exercise of state police power. However, this police power is not absolute; statutes enacted to protect the health of citizens must not violate any constitutionally guaranteed rights. Those statutes which …
