We recall a summer of contentment when American law was suffused with optimism, a season ending a long winter of despair and disorder. For the first fifteen years of this century, many (and perhaps most) American lawyers were filled with confidence that America had healed the wounds of civil war and was healing those of class struggle. We could, and we would, overcome all obstacles to peace and prosperity, not only for our people but for all mankind. This, it was widely believed, would be our century. As early as 1879 Daniel Coit Gilman, the premier educator of his time, …

Thyroid hormone plays an essential role in mammalian brain maturation and function, in large part by regulating the expression of specific neuronal genes. In this tissue, the type 2 deiodinase (D2) appears to be essential for providing adequate levels of the active thyroid hormone 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) during the developmental period. We have studied the regional and cellular localization of D2 mRNA in the brain of 15-day-old neonatal rats. D2 is expressed in the cerebral cortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, caudate, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cerebellum and was absent from the white matter. At the cellular level, D2 is expressed predominantly, if not …
Interaction Between Calf Sex And Calf Genetic Type For Preweaning Traits Of Calves Varying In Percentage Brahman Breeding, F. A. Thrift, S. M. Clark, D. K. Aaron, D. E. Franke
Interaction Between Calf Sex And Calf Genetic Type For Preweaning Traits Of Calves Varying In Percentage Brahman Breeding, F. A. Thrift, S. M. Clark, D. K. Aaron, D. E. Franke

Two data sets were utilized to evaluate interaction between calf sex and calf genetic type for preweaning performance of calves varying in percentage (0, 50, 100) Brahman breeding. Data set I involved birth weight, preweaning average daily gain, and weaning weight records on 3562 Angus (AA), Brahman ♂ × Angus ♀ (BA) and Brahman (BB) calves; data set II consisted of birth weight, preweaning average daily gain and weaning weight records on 3752 Hereford (HH), Brahman ♂ × Hereford ♀ (BH) and Brahman (BB) calves. For both data sets, the calf sex × calf genetic type interaction was significant (P<0.01) except for preweaning average daily gain in data set II. In all cases, the significant interactions were represented by a change in magnitude rather than a change in rank for the two sexes of each calf genetic type. These results indicate that sex differences are expected to be much greater for Brahman-sired BA and BH calves than for calves of 0% (AA or HH) or 100% (BB) Brahman breeding. These increased sex differences are of greatest importance for birth weight because of the relationship that exists between birth weight and calving difficulty.

Strategy For Growth-Led Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria, A. S. F. Atoloye
Strategy For Growth-Led Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria, A. S. F. Atoloye
Economic and Financial Review
The economic growth process of a country is determined by a number of factors among which is technological change. Increased output/performance permitted by this goes a long way in alleviating poverty. Rapid and sustained economic growth utilizing a new industrial strategy calls for proficient use of the natural advantages of modern infrastructures which further serves as a poverty-reducing strategy. The author states that the most credible option by which the poor can receive a fair share of the benefits of development is by subjecting the economy to the full discipline and rigours of market forces for a poverty-reducing growth. Governments …

The effectiveness of management practices in improving quality of runoff from agricultural land areas has been reported based primarily on results from plot- and field-scale studies. There is limited information available on watershed scales, particularly when the dominant agricultural land use is pasture. The objective of this study was to determine whether a program of Best Management Practice (BMP) implementation in the Lincoln Lake watershed of northwestern Arkansas was effective in reducing storm stream flow concentrations and mass transport of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphorus (PO4-P), total phosphorus …

Recommendations For Elimination Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer In Michigan, K. L. Cool, James Haveman, Dan Wyant
Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
A significant infection rate of bovine TB in the deer population of the northeastern lower peninsula poses a potential risk to several important values including public health, United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) TB-free accreditation for Michigan cattle, wildlife health, wildlife-related recreation and tourism and economic stability in several sectors. A risk assessment study by the U.S. D.A. Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (Fort Collins, CO) predicted that if no changes were made in the management of the affected free-ranging deer population, the TB prevalence (compared to the current prevalence of 2.3%). Although the current annual risk of TB …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The relict population of Neotoma floridana occurring along the Niobrara River in north-central Nebraska was found to have a diet composed of 38 types of food items of which 37 types were plants. Unique features of the summer diet of this population were a higher than expected use of red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and invertebrates as food items.

Analysis Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Transcripts During A Primary Infection Of Trigeminal Ganglia Of Cattle, Luis M. Schang, Clinton J. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
During an infection of nonneuronal cells, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) gene expression proceeds in a well-defined cascade. Products of immediate-early (IE) genes are expressed first, and they activate expression of early (E) and late (L) genes. Although the same cascade is assumed to occur during an infection of neurons in trigeminal ganglia (TG) of cattle, no experimental data is available to support this hypothesis. Consequently, we analyzed BHV-1 gene expression in bovine TG at 1, 2, 4, 7, and 15 days postinfection (dpi). Infectious virus was detected in ocular swabs from 1 to 7 dpi but not 15 dpi. By …

The Place Of Persons With Disabilities In Rotuman Society, Jan Rensel, Alan Howard
The Place Of Persons With Disabilities In Rotuman Society, Jan Rensel, Alan Howard
Pacific Studies
In Rotuma, as in many other small, face-to-face societies, persons with disabilities are treated not as members of categories based on their conditions, but as individuals having whole constellations of characteristics and interpersonal histories. Their roles are not scripted on the basis of disabilities, but patterned by a number of key cultural principles that guide all relationships, including notions of immanent justice for wrongdoing, expectations of generosity and reciprocity, personal autonomy, and concern for family honor. Case studies and analyses of exchange interactions are presented to illustrate these points.

A Comparison Of Movements And Burrow Usage Between Indigenous And Relocated Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus Polyphemus) In A Fall Line Sandhills Community, Dorinda Morpeth
Theses and Dissertations
The movements and burrow use of twenty (ten relocated and ten indigenous to the relocation site) adult gopher tortoises {Gopherus polyphemus) were followed during the late spring, summer and early autumn in Talbot County, Georgia. The objectives of this study were to determine whether relocated gopher tortoises developed fidelity to a relocation site, and whether indigenous tortoises reacted adversely to relocated tortoises released in their proximity. Ten tortoises in the right-of-way of a highway construction project were captured, fitted with transmitters, and relocated to a 336 hectare tract of land, 3.2 km east of Geneva, Talbot, County, Georgia. Concurrently, ten …

Florida Audubon Society V. Bentsen: An Improper Application Of Lujan To A Procedural Rights Plaintiff, William M. Orr
Pace Environmental Law Review
Over the past twenty-five years, courts have applied the doctrine of standing in an increasingly stricter fashion upon environmental organizations. In 1996, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia issued the Florida Audubon Society v. Bentsen decision which sets "virtually impossible" standards for environmentalists seeking to bring procedural rights challenges under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Bentsen court held that the plaintiffs did not have standing to file suit because they failed to demonstrate injury in fact and causation. This Case Note asserts that demonstrating the nature and likelihood of environmental injury is unduly …
