Microsats For Environmental Monitoring - And Some Current Canadian Initiatives, Ron Buckingham Sep 1997

Microsats For Environmental Monitoring - And Some Current Canadian Initiatives, Ron Buckingham

Small Satellite Conference

This paper examines the usefulness of microsats for environmental monitoring. It is based in part on a study done by Routes Incorporated for the Canadian Space Agency in 1995, plus more recent information. We define microsats and their instruments as missions whose overall payload, platform, launch, ground segment and operations costs is within a $2M to $ 10M range. The paper describes several types of environmental atmospheric and earth surface monitoring task that could be achieved with microsats, e.g. observation of atmospheric phenomena such as polar stratospheric clouds, gravity waves and ozone profiles. Compact, simple, low-cost imaging spectrographs are candidates …

Focus (Focal Optical Control Using Steppers) - "Stepping" Into The Future Of Autonomous Focal Plane Control, Curtis Bingham, Matthew Felt Sep 1997

Focus (Focal Optical Control Using Steppers) - "Stepping" Into The Future Of Autonomous Focal Plane Control, Curtis Bingham, Matthew Felt

Small Satellite Conference

The alignment of optical components in infrared telescopes is an involved process. The FOCUS design is presented to ensure that optics stay in the proper orientation at cryognic temperatures. FOCUS is based on converting the infinite rotary motion supplied by a stepper motor into linear motion. This motion is used to create a three point actuation system to control the focus and tilt of a focal plane. This system can be modified to actuate any element of the satellite needing three axis positioning. Emphasis has been placed on the mechanical aspects of the design with the knowledge that the controls …

Big Science On A Small Budget: A University Sounding Rocket, Ellen Riddle, Jennifer Owens

Small Satellite Conference

The High-altitude Ozone Measuring and Educational Rocket (HOMER), a pilot for the NASA Student Launch Program, was a suborbital rocket investigation conducted by the Colorado Space Grant Consortium (CSGC). The HOMER mission provided: a unique educational opportunity for hands-on involvement by students in colleges and universities throughout Colorado; measurements of ozone and atmospheric constituents which affect ozone in the Earth's atmosphere; a demonstration of advanced and low-cost technologies that enable these measurements; and an intercomparison of measurement techniques. HOMER was launched from Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia on August 12, 1996. HOMER is a follow-on payload to two …

The Anchor, Volume 111.04: September 17, 1997, Hope College

The Anchor: 1997

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Forte Hardware-In-Loop Simulation, Kimberly Ruud, Hugh Murray, Troy Moore Sep 1997

Forte Hardware-In-Loop Simulation, Kimberly Ruud, Hugh Murray, Troy Moore

Small Satellite Conference

Fast On-Orbit Recording of Transient Events (FORTE) is a small, low Earth orbit satellite scheduled for launch in August 1997. FORTE is a momentum-biased, gravity-gradient stabilized spacecraft. This paper describes the use of a hardware-in-Ioop simulator, developed by Ithaco Inc. and Los Alamos National Laboratory, in performing FORTE mission simulations. Scenarios studied include separation, acquisition on orbit, control system parameter sensitivity studies, sensor noise simulations, antenna deployment and momentum desaturation. Use of the simulator to refine control algorithms and sequences is also described.
