Monte Carlo Simulations Of Photoemission Characteristics From Gaas And Diamond, Abhishek Srivastava Oct 1996

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Photoemission Characteristics From Gaas And Diamond, Abhishek Srivastava

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Monte Carlo based numerical simulations were performed to study photoemission from GaAs and diamond. The central goal was to assess the potential for NEA photoemission from diamond, and to predict its characteristics. The GaAs material system was also included in the simulation study to provide: (i) calibration and validation of the numerical model developed by carefully matching the simulation results with available experimental data, and (ii) quantitative comparisons between the response characteristics of diamond and the better known GaAs system.

Predictions of the energy distribution, temporal response and angular distribution of emitted electrons were obtained. Effects of various parameters, such …

Parental Quality Ratings Of Early Child Care Experiences And Subsequent School Adjustment, Donna Owens Collier Oct 1996

Parental Quality Ratings Of Early Child Care Experiences And Subsequent School Adjustment, Donna Owens Collier

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate differences in the school performances of children with different early child care experiences. The relationship between parental quality ratings of early child care experiences and subsequent school performance was also examined. The subjects in this study were 99 first grade students from two public elementary schools in Chesapeake, Virginia. The parents of these students were asked to assess broad areas of their children's early care. This assessment resulted in four subscores and one overall score of quality. The school performance scores included two measures of academic achievement obtained from the students' …

Development And Experimental Verification Of A Finite Element Model For Ptc Panel Thermal Analysis, Hamid Sayar Oct 1996

Development And Experimental Verification Of A Finite Element Model For Ptc Panel Thermal Analysis, Hamid Sayar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Pyramidal Truss Core (PTC) panel is a new structural concept being used in applications requiring a high strength to weight ratio. This study is concerned with investigating the thermal characteristics of the PTC panels. In this regard, the focus of the analysis was to develop an accurate finite element model of PTC panels for thermal analysis. The resulting model included radiation mode of heat transfer as the dominant means of the heat transfer while neglecting the influence of heat transfer through natural convection. The accuracy of the developed model was verified by comparison of the finite element results with …

Protecting Rights And Promoting Democracy: Judicial Review Under Section 1 Of The Charter, Martha Jackman Oct 1996

Protecting Rights And Promoting Democracy: Judicial Review Under Section 1 Of The Charter, Martha Jackman

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The author argues that, under section 1 of the Charter, the courts must weigh carefully the democratic potential of rights guarantees against the democratic quality of government decisions which undermine those rights. The article points to the Egan and Eldridge cases as examples of decisions in which the willingness to uphold rights violations under section 1, in the name of deference to the legislature, actually undermines democratic values. The article examines the RIR-MacDonald decision as a starting point for a section 1 analysis which identifies the characteristics of government decisionmaking that must be present if rights violations are to be …

The Mareva Injunction In Aid Of Foreign Proceedings, Paul Michell Oct 1996

The Mareva Injunction In Aid Of Foreign Proceedings, Paul Michell

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Courts have long awarded Mareva injunctions to prevent defendants from frustrating the domestic litigation process. An emerging question is whether Canadian courts can order Mareva injunctions in aid of foreign proceedings. Traditional English authority, recently confirmed by the Privy Council, says no. Yet Canadian courts take a different view, and are in the process of developing principles to guide the awarding of Mareva relief in aid of foreign proceedings. After a critical analysis of the debate, this article evaluates several recent decisions, argues in favour of such a power, and proposes a framework by which it should be exercised.

The Strategist And The Web Revisited: An Updated Guide To Internet Resources, Steven Metz Dr., James Kievit Ltc Oct 1996

The Strategist And The Web Revisited: An Updated Guide To Internet Resources, Steven Metz Dr., James Kievit Ltc

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Every day of the "Information Age" makes more material available via the Internet. Yet simply "surfing the 'Net'," while perhaps enjoyable as recreation, is ill-suited for rapidly locating valid, salient information. This is particularly true for analysts or military professionals seeking to develop strategy, to research national security issues, or to provide policy advice. With the original edition of this essay in February 1996, James Kievit and Steven Metz began an effort to construct guideposts for strategic thinkers and practitioners to follow when travelling the "information superhighway." That such a "travel guide" is valuable is amply demonstrated by the rapidity …

Breakdown Of Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Theory For Certain Quantum Phase Transitions, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick Oct 1996

Breakdown Of Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Theory For Certain Quantum Phase Transitions, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The quantum ferromagnetic transition of itinerant electrons is considered. It is shown that the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory described by Hertz and others breaks down due to a singular coupling between fluctuations of the conserved order parameter. This coupling induces an effective long-range interaction between the spins of the form 1/r2d-1. It leads to unusual scaling behavior at the quantum critical point in 1 < d ≤ 3 dimensions, which is determined exactly.

Demographic And Socio-Economic Determinants Of Contraceptive Use In A Low Income Community Of Karachi, A Lasee, J B. Mccormick Oct 1996

Demographic And Socio-Economic Determinants Of Contraceptive Use In A Low Income Community Of Karachi, A Lasee, J B. Mccormick

Community Health Sciences

The study objectives were to assess multiple factors associated with the use of contraceptives among married women living in a low income community in Karachi. The study was a cross sectional survey of 608 women between the ages of 15 and 49 years. The mean number of living children per woman was 3.7 (confidence intervals 3.49-3.9). The literacy rate was 53%. The current use of contraceptives was 29%. Among many variables examined and in consistence with studies in other countries, women were 4 to 5 times more likely to use contraceptives if they had 3 or more living children than …

An Assessment Of Grass Roots Participation In The Development Of Egypt, Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Amani Kandil, Moheb Zaki, Nagah Hassan Oct 1996

An Assessment Of Grass Roots Participation In The Development Of Egypt, Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Amani Kandil, Moheb Zaki, Nagah Hassan

Faculty Books

This study aims to examine the extent and effectiveness of grassroots participation in Egyptian private voluntary organizations (PVOs). In addition, it traces the historical development of PVOs in Egypt and the laws that have been governing their activities. The authors deduce from this study that legal restrictions and bureaucratic impediments―not financial constraints―are the main obstacles that limit the activities of PVOs, and come up with specific recommendations to enhance grassroots participation in Egyptian society.

Economic Development And The Distribution Of Land Rents In Singapore: A Georgist Implementation, Sock-Yong Phang Oct 1996

Economic Development And The Distribution Of Land Rents In Singapore: A Georgist Implementation, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Independent Singapore, which has a tradition of free trade, has implemented large doses of Henry George's prescriptions. It has successfully captured land rents for redistribution through its land acquisition, public housing and other programs. These policies have been instrumental in the successful economic development of the island city state. Industrial estates on state-owned land were leased to foreign multinationals for export-oriented manufacturing which created the bulk of jobs in the sector. Commercial developments are built by the program. Affordable 99-year leasehold housing, built by the state, provided added economic incentives for employment, and helped keep inflation and wages down. Private …

Singapore's Experience With Car Quotas: Issues And Policy Processes, Sock-Yong Phang, Wing-Keung Wong, Ngee-Choon Chia Oct 1996

Singapore's Experience With Car Quotas: Issues And Policy Processes, Sock-Yong Phang, Wing-Keung Wong, Ngee-Choon Chia

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines the policy processes behind Singapore's car quotas. The policy, when filtered through the market mechanism, had a number of unintended consequences. The public's unhappiness with certain features and [`]loopholes' of the system resulted in many changes to the rules. The effects of recent measures to curb speculation on quota premiums are evaluated. Problems with Singapore's Weekend Car Scheme are also discussed. The lesson for transport policy makers elsewhere is that in attempting to deal with the road congestion problem through car ownership policies, an asset market for vehicles should be taken into account.

The Study Of The Impact Of Possible Selves On The Goal-Setting Skills Of Incarcerated Male Students With Learning Disabilities, Susie M. Martin Oct 1996

The Study Of The Impact Of Possible Selves On The Goal-Setting Skills Of Incarcerated Male Students With Learning Disabilities, Susie M. Martin

Masters Theses

Possible selves is a theory. It involves strategies in helping students view themselves in a more desirable future state. It is focused on the self in three basic domains; Hoped for Selves, Expected Selves, and Feared Selves. Possible Selves leads an individual into goal setting skills.

Student inmates with learning disabilities do not have well developed plans for their futures upon release from prison. As a result, such students often return to prison for illegal acts.

A solution to the problem is to implement a goal setting skills program that is based on the students' view of positive possible selves …

The Choice Between Implied Warranty And Tort Liability For Recovery Of Pure Economic Loss In "Contract-Torts": A Comparison Of Judicial And Private Ordering In The Real Property Market, Norman Siebrasse Oct 1996

The Choice Between Implied Warranty And Tort Liability For Recovery Of Pure Economic Loss In "Contract-Torts": A Comparison Of Judicial And Private Ordering In The Real Property Market, Norman Siebrasse

Dalhousie Law Journal

The Supreme Court's decision in Winnipeg Condo. Corp. No. 36 v. Bird Construction expanded recovery for pure economic loss in tort by allowing a subsequent purchaser to recover the cost of repairing a dangerous defect arising out of negligence in the construction of a building. This article outlines the theoretical justifications for extended tort liability when the parties are linked by a contractual chain but are not in privity, and concludes that it is not possible to determine whether extended liability is desirable without considering the details of the market in question. A comparison between tort liability and the protection …

Spurious Regression Unmasked, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 1996

Spurious Regression Unmasked, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper argues that trending time series can admit valid regression representations even when the dependent variable and the regressors are statistically independent, i.e., in situations that are presently characterized in the literature as “spurious regressions.” Our theory is directed mainly at the two classic examples of regressions of stochastic trends on time polynomials and regressions among independent random walks. But it has more general applicability and, we think, wider implications. Contrary to established wisdom, our theory justifies regressions of this type as valid models for the data. The radical conclusion that emerges from this study is that there are …
