An Analysis Of Decision Styles As A Predictor Variable For Levels Of Creativity And/Or Orientations Toward Risk-Taking Of Knowledge Workers., Beth Ann Hill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of this study was to determine if decision styles of knowledge workers could predict a level of creativity and/or an orientation toward risk of knowledge workers. A biographical survey and two self-scoring instruments were administered to each subject. The first instrument, Decision Style Inventory (DSI) by Alan Rowe and Richard Mason classified the subjects according to four basic decision styles: directive, analytical, conceptual and behavioral. The second instrument, The Creatrix Inventory (C&RT) by Richard Byrd measured the subject's level of creativity and orientation toward risk. There were two primary hypothesis: Hypothesis One examined the statistical strength of the …
Study Of The Effect Of Pulsating Combustion On The Calcination Reaction., Robert Edwin James
Study Of The Effect Of Pulsating Combustion On The Calcination Reaction., Robert Edwin James
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Limestone calcination is an important process for the power generation industry. Calcination is the precursor to the sulfation process which is used for flue gas cleanup. This research studies the effects of a pulse combustion exhaust stream on the calcination of limestone. Results are presented for different types of limestone, injected at different exhaust stream conditions and locations in the exhaust stream. Certain conditions show promising results in the form of larger calcination percentages and larger surface areas. Results of pulsating cases were compared to results found using a steady combustor. A computer code modeling the pulse combustor was used …
'There's No Damn Reason For It--It's Just Our Policy': Labor-Management Conflict In Martinsburg, West Virginia's Textile And Garment Industries., Jerra Jenrette
'There's No Damn Reason For It--It's Just Our Policy': Labor-Management Conflict In Martinsburg, West Virginia's Textile And Garment Industries., Jerra Jenrette
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Beginning in 1890 with the opening of the Middlesex Knitting Company, and the Crawford Woolen Mill in 1891, Martinsburg, West Virginia's textile and garment history had begun. Interest in developing these first factories originated with a local development company who looked for outside investors who could enhance the potential success of the new industries. Investors from Philadelphia, New York, and New Brunswick, New Jersey found Martinsburg to be conducive to their financial ventures. During most of that time the factories became the economic lifeline of the small city. Despite early successes by investors, the factories suffered during the late teens …

The study of the nature of experiences of four-year-olds in two Russian preschools as well as an overview of the history and public policies concerning early childhood care and education in the former Soviet Union provide a profile for understanding the effects traditions, beliefs, and policies have on the preschool experiences of young children everywhere. This study was a qualitative approach to portions of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievements' (IEA) cross cultural study of early childhood education and care. Interviews and observations were conducted in two preschools in Moscow, Russia over a four month period beginning …
Dna Radioprotection By Aminothiols., Christopher John Kolanko
Dna Radioprotection By Aminothiols., Christopher John Kolanko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this study was to determine the dominant mechanism (OH-radical scavenging or non-OH-radical scavenging mechanisms) of radioprotection by the thiol scavenger dithiothreitol (DTT) making comparisons between a cellular and isolated plasmid DNA model systems. The protection mechanism of DTT was determined experimentally by comparing the thiol to known OH-radical scavenging compounds (dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol and 1,3-dimethyluracil) measuring the relative differences in their protection factor for radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in cells and single-strand break induction in the plasmid DNA model. A follow-up study was conducted comparing radioprotection between DTT and the neutral thiol 2-mercaptoethanol (2ME) to determine the contribution …
The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Because coal resources are dwindling, it is necessary to mine seams that are more difficult to support structurally. The mining industry needs a mine layout that is safe, but designed to be competitive in the world market. Presented in this dissertation is a technique that predicts the stress distribution in coal mine pillars. This approach uses an analytic equation to predict stress and yield characteristics; so, in some respects, it is as accurate as numerical modeling. It uses fracture mechanics to model many structures including longwall gob, yield pillars, cribs, posts, longwall chocks and hydrostatic loads. It models the yield …

Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By definition, the study of emergent literacy must address the literacy development of children from "birth" to "conventional literacy." In actuality, studies of the literacy development of children between the ages of 2 and 4 have become common, while studies regarding literacy development of 1-year-olds is extremely limited and studies beginning at birth even fewer. Through this study, data regarding the language, reading, and writing behaviors of children from birth to three years is identified, consolidated, and confirmed. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What are the emergent literacy behaviors of a child from birth to three years? (2) …
The Development Of A Coaching Education Curriculum Framework Outlining The Learning Outcomes Coaches Are To Be Taught To Pursue Through Interscholastic Athletics., A Keith Dils
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coaches and administrators involved in athletics in the educational milieu proclaim that sport is an integral part of the educational process. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains that athletics is "educational" (Jable, 1986). However, positive outcomes are not inevitable and in fact negative outcomes often occur. Because the mandates for the "educational" use of athletics consist of general and undefined values (e.g., collapsing the concept of sportsmanship into one undefined value) they are not conducive to making values development through sport an attainable goal (Wandzilak & Potter, 1986). Also, these mandates for the "educational" use of sport …

The Toroidal Helical Antenna Analysis And Performance Evaluation., Wael Shaker Ellithy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Toroidal Helical Antenna (THA) is a newly patented antenna design, that has a small physical profile. The THA is a wire antenna which consists of one or more conductor helices wrapped about a toroidal core, usually with different pitch senses. The conductor helices are generally fed from one or more ports. An important class of THA is the Contrawound Toroidal Helical Antenna (CTHA) which has two helices with uniform pitches, opposite senses, and one feeding port. This dissertation presents the development and the implementation of a computer model for investigating the THA in order to optimize its performance by …
Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using a general, second-order, nonlocal formalism (Ganguli et al., 1985, 1988, 1994), we find that multiple Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) nonlocal eigenmodes with comparable growth rates are possible for a given set of parameters. This is in contrast to local modes and to most of the nonlocal modes, where the "the ground state" is usually most unstable. This finding suggests a possible explanation of the broadband and spiky spectrum of IEDD waves seen in laboratory experiments (Koepke et al., 1994, 1995; Amatucci et al., 1994; Carroll et al., 1996) and in Particle-In-Cell simulations (Nishikawa et al., 1988, 1990). We develop …

A Recent Colonization Of Dolichopoda Cave Crickets In The Poscola Cave (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae), Camilla Bernardini, Claudio Di Russo, Mauro Rampini, Donatella Cersaroni, Valerio Sbordoni
International Journal of Speleology
We report a series of investigations carried out on a Dolichopoda population recently discovered in the Poscola cave and in some small caves nearby (Lessini Mountains, Vicenza). This population is located north of Po river, outside the present known geographic range of this genus in Italy. Morphology of the epiphallus corroborated by chromosome and allozyme analysis indicated that this population belongs to D. laetitiae. Study of the genetic structure of population in the Poscola area revealed high gene flow levels between Poscola and the other minor caves, suggesting the occurrence of a single expanding population. This finding as well …

A New Genus And Species Of Troglobitic Trechinae (Coleoptera, Carabidae) From Southern China, Augusto Vigna Taglianti
International Journal of Speleology
Guizhaphaenops zorzini n.gen.n.sp. is described from Anjia Yan Cave, Shuicheng County, Guizhou (China). This highly specialized troglobite species is easily recognizable from the other cave dwelling Trechini from China for the main morphological external characters, but its true relationships remain uncertain, the male being still unknown. Similar in habitus to Cathaiaphaenops and to Sinotroglodytes, the new taxon is much more related to the latter, being dorsally glabrous and having the mentum fused with the submentum, with a deep oval fovea, but it differs in its elongated head, with incomplete frontal furrows and without posterior frontal setae.

Speleothems And Cave Minerals In Gypsum Caves, Paolo Forti
Speleothems And Cave Minerals In Gypsum Caves, Paolo Forti
International Journal of Speleology
For many years gypsum karst was considered to contain little of interest from the point of view of chemical deposits. Relatively recently a general study of speleothems has begun within gypsum karst areas in different climatic zones around the world. So far this ongoing research has shown that gypsum karst can be very interesting in terms of its contained chemical deposits. In this chapter, all that is currently known about speleothems in gypsum caves is reported systematically, and the distinctive climatic control over them is emphasised.
Some Examples Of Gypsum Karsts And The More Important Gypsum Caves In Spain, Jose Maria Calaforra, Antonio Pulido-Bosch
Some Examples Of Gypsum Karsts And The More Important Gypsum Caves In Spain, Jose Maria Calaforra, Antonio Pulido-Bosch
International Journal of Speleology
Spain possesses some of the most important examples of gypsum karst in Europe, in terms of the extent and variety of the gypsiferous outcrops. These are divided into gypsum belonging to the Triassic, Palaeogene and Neogene epochs, each of which displays different lithological and structural aspects. Some of Spain’s most significant gypsum karsts, from the speleological standpoint, are described, and these share a common characteristic of all supporting the development of large caves. Reference is made to the geomorphology, hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of the gypsum karsts of Sorbas, Vallada and Gobantes-Meliones, which provide significant examples of intrastratal karst, speleogenesis by …
The Gypsum Karst Of Italy, Paolo Forti, Ugo Sauro
The Gypsum Karst Of Italy, Paolo Forti, Ugo Sauro
International Journal of Speleology
Gypsum karst has been studied in Italy since the last decades of the l9th Century. In 1917 the geographer Olinto Marinelli published “Fenomeni carsici delle regioni gessose d’Italia”, a fundamental synthesis of the early research. He distinguished 56 different morpho-karstic gypsum units and/or areas, which are all different in size and character, and described them, paying special attention to their surface morphology and hydrology. Marinelli listed all the main gypsum units and only a few secondary outcrops were overlooked. After Marinelli’s synthesis, except for some discussion of archaeological caves, only a few papers about gypsum karst and environment were published …

Gypsum Karst In The Western Ukraine, Alexander Klimchouk
Gypsum Karst In The Western Ukraine, Alexander Klimchouk
International Journal of Speleology
The great gypsum karst of the Western Ukraine, which is associated with Miocene (Badenian) gypsum, provides the worlds foremost examples of intrastratal gypsum karst and speleogenesis under artesian conditions. Differential neotectonic movements have resulted in various parts of the territory displaying different types (stages) of intrastratal karst, from deep-seated, through subjacent, to entrenched. Internal gypsum karstification proceeded mainly under confined hydrogeological conditions. While such development still continues in part of the territory, other parts exhibit entrenched karst settings. Huge relict maze cave systems have been explored here, five of which are currently the longest known gypsum caves in the world. …
Gypsum Karst Of The Baltic Republics, Bernardas Paukstys, Vytautas Narbutas
Gypsum Karst Of The Baltic Republics, Bernardas Paukstys, Vytautas Narbutas
International Journal of Speleology
The Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have karst areas developed in both carbonate and gypsiferous rocks. In the north, within the Republic of Estonia, Ordovician and Silurian limestones and dolomites crop out, or are covered by glacial Quaternary sediments. To the south, in Latvia and Lithuania, gypsum karst is actively developing in evaporites of Late Devonian (Frasnian) age. Although gypsum and mixed sulphate-carbonate karst only occupy small areas in the Baltic countries, they have important engineering and geo-ecological consequences. Due to the rapid dissolution of gypsum, the evolution of gypsum karst causes not only geological hazards such as …

A Quasi-One-Dimensional Theory For Anisotropic Propagation Of Excitation In Cardiac Muscle, Jiashin Wu, Edward A. Johnson, J. Mailen Kootsey
A Quasi-One-Dimensional Theory For Anisotropic Propagation Of Excitation In Cardiac Muscle, Jiashin Wu, Edward A. Johnson, J. Mailen Kootsey
Faculty Publications
It has been shown that propagation of excitation in cardiac muscle is anisotropic. Compared to propagation at right angles to the long axes of the fibers, propagation along the long axis is faster, the extracellular action potential (AP) is larger in amplitude, and the intracellular AP has a lower maximum rate of depolarization, a larger time constant of the foot, and a lower peak amplitude. These observations are contrary to the predictions of classical one-dimensional (1-D) cable theory and, thus far, no satisfactory theory for them has been reported. As an alternative description of propagation in cardiac muscle, this study …

We present measurements of the structure function F2 in e+p scattering at HERA in the range 3.5 GeV2 < Q2 < 5000 GeV2. A new reconstruction method has allowed a significant improvement in the resolution of the kinematic variables and an extension of the kinematic region covered by the experiment. At Q2 < 35 GeV2 the range in x now spans 6.3 · 10-5 < x < 0.08 providing overlap with measurements from fixed target experiments. At values of Q2 above 1000 GeV2 the x range extends to 0.5. Systematic errors below 5% have been achieved for most of the kinematic region. The structure function rises as x decreases; the rise becomes more pronounced as Q2 increases. The behaviour of the structure function data is well described by next-to-leading order perturbative QCD as implemented in the DGLAP evolution equations. © Springer-Verlag 1996.
