In this thesis, I shall study and compare various methods for manipulating two- and three-dimensional image data produced with a nuclear magnetic resonance scanner. In particular, I will examine ways of focusing upon specific structures internal to the object under study (segmentation); and will explore means of rendering realistic images of these structures on a computer screen using depth-cueing, shading, and ray-casting techniques.

The study examined the relations of social-environmental characteristics of families and demographic variables on career decision/indecision of 425 secondary Tech Prep students in North Florida. Career decision/indecision was the dependent variable, measured by the Career Decision Scale (Osipow, Carney, Winer, Yanico, & Koschier, 1987). Predictor independent variables included social-environmental characteristics of families as measured by the Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981). Other predictor independent variables included academic achievement (reading comprehension and mathematics)' gender, economic disadvantage and race.

Environmental education is becoming an increasingly important component of secondary science education as our society attempts to minimize the exploitations and damaging actions of humankind on the earth. Environmental education has evolved primarily from environmental consciousness in the 1960s to an environmentally active focus in the 1990s. This project examined the effectiveness of an environmental education curriculum that focuses on improving environmental behaviors and attitudes as well as knowledge.

We present here the usefulness of PCA as a form of spectral data compression, and our results to date of classification on the MK system.

In this speech to be given on November 15, 1996, as the American contribution to the week-long conference on administrative law sponsored by the Fundaci6n Estudios de Derecho Administrativo in Caracas, Venezuela, Professor Peter L. Strauss addresses the history and developing political character of rulemaking in federal law over the fifty years since enactment of the Administrative Procedure Act. As a framework, Professor Strauss sets forth a hierarchy of institutional rulemaking, from constitution through informal advising. He then develops his discussion of rulemaking by tracing the federal process of rulemaking through time, beginning with the enactment of the Administrative Procedure …

Inheritance of aphid resistance and allelic relationships among sources of resistance was studied in the parents, F1, F2, F3, and backcross populations of cowpea crosses. Each 4-day old seedling was infested with five fourth-instar aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded 14-16 days after infestation when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data from eight crosses between resistant and susceptible cowpea cultivars indicated that aphid resistance was inherited as a monogenic dominant trait. Segregation data from crosses among eight resistant cultivars indicated that one or two loci and modifier(s) were involved in the expression of resistance to aphids. It was suggested …

Trap catch size was used to investigate whether Glossina pallidipes and G. longipennis could distinguish between the urine of the African buffalo, cattle, and waterbuck at Nguruman in southwest Kenya, NG2G traps baited with aged urine of these bovids caught significantly more of each tsetse than did the controls. The mean catch of either tsetse species in traps baited with aged urine of buffalo and cattle (tsetse hosts) and waterbuck (a nonhost) did not differ significantly. Aged urine from both tsetse hosts (buffalo and cattle) and the nonhost (waterbuck) was found to contain 4-cresol and 3-n-propylphenol in about the same …

The presence of pheromones produced by larvae of Glossina morsitans morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, which attract gravid females and result in aggregation of pupae, is confirmed. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to larviposit over moist sand conditioned by previously allowing larvae to pupariate in it. Similar results were obtained with filter papers contaminated with the prepupariation excretions of larvae and with volatiles collected from larvae prior to pupariation. n-Pentadecane and n-dodecane were identified as the dominant electrophysiologically active components of the larviposition pheromones of G. m. morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, by GC-EAD and GC-MS analysis …

Membrane feeding studies were conducted to determine the effects of raw juices and chemical extracts of leaves of aphid-resistant (ICV-12) and aphid- susceptible (ICV-1) cultivars of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)], on the survival, growth, and reproduction of cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch. Life table and demographic statistics of the cohort population and subsequent generations were estimated. Compared to ICV-1, the leaf juices and chemical extracts of ICV-12 exhibited significant (P ≤ 0.05) adverse effects on aphid survival, growth, and reproduction. Raw leaf juice and ethyl acetate extract of ICV-12 in both water and sucrose significantly (P ≤ 0.05) limited …

Both Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae induced, approximately 30% mortalities in adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus feeding on rabbits while M. anisopliae induced a mortality of 37% in adult Amblyomma variegatum. Both fungal species induced reductions in engorgement weights, fecundity, and egg hatchability in adult A. variegatum. M. anisopliae reduced fecundity by 94% in A. variegatum. Furthermore, B. bassiana reduced egg hatchability to 0%, while 11% of the infected females failed to lay eggs. In Zebu cattle naturally infested, with R. appendiculatus in the field, both B. bassiana and M. anisopliae induced high mortalities ranging from 76-85%, a remarkable reduction in fecundity …

We assessed the reproductive responses of adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, Mononychellus tanajoa, on cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The oviposition rates increased with number of prey consumed per predator per day with a maximum of approximately two eggs per day for I. degenerans and four eggs per day for N. teke. The oviposition rate of N. teke was higher when consuming eggs than other prey stages. Neoseiulus teke was more efficient than I. degenerans in converting consumed prey into egg production. 1,8-Cineole was identified as one of the electrophysiologically active components of the volatiles from banana cultivars susceptible to the banana weevil. It was also shown to be an attractant for the banana weevil Comopolites sordidus in laboratory behavioural bioassays. The resistant cultivar did not contain 1,8-cineole. β-Phellandrene, which exhibited electrophysiological activity, but did not show any attraction to the banana weevil, was found only in the resistant banana cultivar.

The functional responses of pintonymph and adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, the cassava green mite (CGM), Mononychellus tanajoa, were studied on excised cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The responses obtained were predominantly sigmoid type III curves with the highest plateau when both stages of I. degenerans and N. teke were preying on CGM eggs. In all cases, the predation rate of the former species exceeded that of the latter. The empirical data were fitted by four different models. The suitability of 12 graminaceous weeds of ricefields as host plants for two rice leaffolders, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) and Marasmia patnalis Bradley (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was compared to a susceptible (IR36) and a moderately resistant (TKM6) rice variety in laboratory and greenhouse tests. Although rice was the most preferred host of the two leaffolder species, their responses to the test weeds varied significantly. Cnaphalocrocis medinalis responded better to most of the test weeds than did M. patnalis, suggesting a wider host range for C. medinalis. Gregarious nymphs of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were more attracted to volatiles from mechanically damaged food plants used for rearing than to either the undamaged or damaged food plants not used as diet in Y-tube olfactometer assays. Comparative analysis of the volatile emissions from plants used for rearing and food plants not used for rearing, e.g. Sorghum bicolor, Pennisetum clandestinum, Schouwia thebaica, wheat (Triticum sp., var. 'Nyangumi'), Zygophyllum simplex, Heliotropium undulatum and Tribulus terrestris was carried out by GC, GC-EAD and GC-MS. Milk glands, dissected out and collected from Glossina morsitans centralis (Machado) females, artificially inoculated at the third-instar larval stage with a virus suspension obtained from hypertrophied salivary glands of wild-caught virus-infected Glossina pallidipes (Austen), were processed for routine electron microscopy and examined for pathological changes. They were compared to milk glands dissected out from normal female G.m. centralis at the same stage of pregnancy cycle. Upon dissection there were notable physical differences between control and virus-infected milk glands. Histologically, some areas of the gland developed severe degeneration while other areas developed less severe pathological changes. Ultrastructural studies revealed the presence …

We have studied the effect of shifting the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) from crowded to solitary conditions, or vice versa on the emission of the adult aggregation pheromone (as measured by released phenylacetonitrile) and compared this with changes in morphometrics. Adult males of the F0 generation resulting from shifting crowd-reared (gregarious) hoppers, fledglings or mature adults (aged 20-22 days after the final moult) to solitary conditions did not produce phenylacetonitrile, similar to solitary-reared adults. Conversely, adults of the F0 generation resulting from shifting solitary-reared (solitarious) hoppers, fledglings or mature adults to crowded conditions produced pheromone at levels which were …

This study examines the external and internal anatomy of the polypneustic (respiratory) lobes in 8 species of tsetse larvae (Diptera: Glossinidae). In the more primitive fusca group, the respiratory lobes are either ring-like (Glossina longipennis) or partially divided into 2 lobes (G. brevipalpis). Two distinctly separated lobes are present in the palpalis group (G. palpalis, G. tachinoides, G. fuscipes) and in the morsitans group (G. morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni). Tick resistance in three breeds of cattle, two indigenous breeds (Arssi and Boran) and one Boran × Friesian cross-breed, were compared following natural tick infestations at Abernossa ranch in Ethiopia. The local Arssi breed was found to have the highest tick resistance, followed by the Boran breed, whereas the Boran × Friesian was the least resistant. Over a period of 12 months, from October 1991 to September 1992, a total of 32 897 ticks composed of four genera were collected from the animals. The Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training (as it was then called) funded Edith Cowan University from the 1995 National Priority (Reserve) Fund to direct a project to identify courses for educating and training personnel employed by justice agencies on multicultural issues; identify course content for a program to educate NESB and Aboriginal peoples on various aspects of the Australian justice system; and develop training packages for the justice agencies and NESB and Aboriginal communities. The Project was conceived against the background of an increasing concern about the well-being of minority groups within the justice system.

The compaction step of integrated circuit design motivates associating several kinds of graphs with a collection of non-overlapping rectangles in the plane. These graphs are intended to capture various visibility relations amongst the rectangles in the collection. The contribution of this paper is to propose time- and cost-optimal algorithms to construct two such graphs, namely, the dominance graph (DG, for short) and the visibility graph (VG, for short). Specifically, we show that with a collection of n non-overlapping rectangles as input, both these structures can be constructed in θ (log n) time using n processors in the CREW model.

Based on the economic theory of regulation, our model portrays U.S. senators as utility-maximizing agents and the American Medical Association (AMA) as a rational contributor. We use contributions from the AMA's political arm, the American Political Action Committee (AMPAC), and roll call votes in the U.S. Senate from 1979-1992 to test for AMPAC contributions effects, to test the hypothesis that the AMA "rewards" senators for their voting behavior, and to determine the role of issue specificity. We use pooled, cross-sectional data in a simultaneous Probit-Tobit-Generalized Least Squares framework and extend the traditional analyses by examining alternative timing specifications, election year …
