A Critique Of The Telecommunications Description Language (Ted), Brian J. Premore, David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu Nov 1996

A Critique Of The Telecommunications Description Language (Ted), Brian J. Premore, David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu

Computer Science Technical Reports

TeD is an object-oriented description language designed to facilitate the modeling of large scale telecommunication networks, with simulation on parallel and distributed platforms. TeD models are mapped to the Georgia Tech Time Warp engine (GTW) for execution. In this paper we outline the features of TeD, pointing out its strengths and identifying characteristics that gave us trouble as we used TeD to model detailed networks. Our issues are motivated specifically by a model of TCP and a model of multicast resource allocation. Our intention is to illustrate by example what TeD can do, and characteristics that a potential TeD user …

Bayesian Posterior Distributions In Limited Information Analysis Of The Simultaneous Equations Model Using The Jeffreys’ Prior, John C. Chao, Peter C.B. Phillips Nov 1996

Bayesian Posterior Distributions In Limited Information Analysis Of The Simultaneous Equations Model Using The Jeffreys’ Prior, John C. Chao, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the use of the Jeffreys’ prior in Bayesian analysis of the simultaneous equations model (SEM). Exact representations are obtained for the posterior density of the structural coefficient beta in canonical SEM’s with two endogenous variables. For the general case with m endogenous variables and an unknown covariance matrix, the Laplace approximation is used to derive an analytic formula for the same posterior density. Both the exact and the approximate formulas we derive are found to exhibit Cauchy-like tails analogous to comparable results in the classical literature on LIML estimation. Moreover, in the special case of a two-equation, …

Market Diffusion With Two-Sided Learning, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki Nov 1996

Market Diffusion With Two-Sided Learning, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The diffusion of a new product of uncertain value is analyzed in a duopolistic market in continuous time. The two sides of the market, buyers and sellers, learn the true value of the new product over time as a result of experimentation. Buyers have heterogeneous preferences over the products and sellers compete in prices. The pricing policies and market shares of the sellers in the unique Markov perfect equilibrium are obtained explicitly. The dynamics of the equilibrium market shares display excessive sales of the new product relative to the social optimum in early stages and too low sales later on. …

Hyperfinite Asset Pricing Theory, M. Ali Khan, Yeneng Sun Nov 1996

Hyperfinite Asset Pricing Theory, M. Ali Khan, Yeneng Sun

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We present a model of a financial market which unifies the capital-asset-pricing model (CAPM) of Sharpe-Lintner, and the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) of Ross. The model is based on a recent theory of hyperfinite processes, and it uncovers asset pricing phenomena which cannot be treated by classical methods, and whose asymptotic counterparts are not already, or even readily, apparent in the setting of a large but finite number of assets. In the model, an asset’s unexpected return can be decomposed into a systematic and an unsystematic part, as in the APT, and the systematic part further decomposed leads to a …

Conditional Independence Restrictions: Testing And Estimation, Oliver B. Linton, Pedro Gozalo Nov 1996

Conditional Independence Restrictions: Testing And Estimation, Oliver B. Linton, Pedro Gozalo

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We propose a nonparametric empirical distribution function based test of an hypothesis of conditional independence between variables of interest. This hypothesis is of interest both for model specification purposes, parametric and semiparametric, and for non-model based testing of economic hypotheses. We allow for both discrete variables and estimated parameters. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic is a functional of a Gaussian process. A bootstrap procedure is proposed for calculating the critical values. Our test has power against alternatives at distance n -1/2 from the null; this result holding independently of dimension. Monte Carlo simulations provide evidence on size …

On The Number Of Bootstrap Repetitions For Bootstrap Standard Errors, Confidence Internals, And Tests, Donald W.K. Andrews, Moshe Buchinsky Nov 1996

On The Number Of Bootstrap Repetitions For Bootstrap Standard Errors, Confidence Internals, And Tests, Donald W.K. Andrews, Moshe Buchinsky

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers the problem of choosing the number of bootstrap repetitions B for bootstrap standard errors, confidence intervals, and tests. For each of these problems, the paper provides a three-step method for choosing B to achieve a desired level of accuracy. Accuracy is measured by the percentage deviation of the bootstrap standard error estimate, confidence interval endpoint(s), test’s critical value, or test’s p -value based on B bootstrap simulations from the corresponding ideal bootstrap quantities for which B = ∞. Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed methods work quite well. The results apply quite generally to parametric, semiparametric, …

Trade-Offs, Food Web Structure, And The Coexistence Of Habitat Specialists And Generalists, Mark A. Mcpeek Nov 1996

Trade-Offs, Food Web Structure, And The Coexistence Of Habitat Specialists And Generalists, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Species differ greatly in the breadth of their environmental distributions. Within the same collection of habitats, some species occur in many habitats, while others are only able to exist in one of a few. Trade-offs in the abilities of species to perform in various ecological interactions are important both to facilitating species coexistence within a habitat and to limiting the distributions of species among habitats. In this article I use a food web model to explore how in the same collection of habitats some species may be limited by trade-offs to occupying only one habitat, while other species may face …

F(C)Gammari-Targeted Fusion Proteins Result In Efficient Presentation By Human Monocytes Of Antigenic And Antagonist T Cell Epitopes, Chunlei Liu, Joel Goldstein, Robert F. Graziano, Jia He, Jeremiah K. O'Shea, Yashwant Deo, Paul M. Guyre

Dartmouth Scholarship

A major challenge for using native or modified T cell epitopes to induce or suppress immunity relates to poor localization of peptides to antigen presenting cells (APCs) in vivo. In this study, we demonstrate enhanced presentation of antigenic and antagonistic peptides by targeting them to the type I Fc receptor for IgG (F(c)gammaRI, CD64) on human monocytes. A Th epitope of tetanus toxoid, TT830, and the antagonistic peptide for TT830, TT833S, were genetically grafted into the constant region of the heavy chain of the humanized anti-CD64 mAb 22 and expressed as monovalent fusion proteins, Fab22-TT830 and Fab22-TT833S. These CD64-targeted peptides …

Wear And Friction Behavior Of Metal Impregnated Microporous Carbon Composites, Gultekin Goller, D. P. Koty, Surendra N. Tewari, M. Singh, A. Tekin Nov 1996

Wear And Friction Behavior Of Metal Impregnated Microporous Carbon Composites, Gultekin Goller, D. P. Koty, Surendra N. Tewari, M. Singh, A. Tekin

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Metal-matrix composites have been prepared by pressure-infiltration casting of copper-base alloy melts into microporous carbon preforms. The carbon preforms contained varying proportions of amorphous carbon and graphite. Load dependence of the wear and friction behavior of the composite pins has been examined under ambient conditions against cast-iron plates, using a pin-on-plate reciprocating wear tester. The wear resistance of the composite is significantly improved, as compared with the base alloy. Contrary to the normally expected behavior, the addition of graphite to the amorphous carbon does not reduce the friction coefficient, especially at high loads. The wear and friction behavior of the …

Permeability Of Microporous Carbon Preforms, S. K. Datta, N. Simhai, Surendra N. Tewari, Jorge E. Gatica, M. Singh

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The permeability of microporous amorphous carbon preforms with varying pore size and pore distributions has been experimentally examined. The porous structures have been characterized by mercury porosimetry and by quantitative metallography of pressure-infiltration-cast metal matrix composites based on the carbon preforms. The permeability shows a linear correlation with the fraction porosity and the square of the pore diameter.

Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan Nov 1996

Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan

Conference papers

In this paper the possible applications of VR to the Tourism Industry are discussed. In order to develop an application for any industry one must first get a clear understanding of that industry. Once this is achieved the next step is to develop an application to suit the needs of the Industry. The Industry in question here is the Tourism Industry and this paper begins by discussing the Tourism Industry and more specifically the relationship between Tourism and technology. This is absolutely essential in order to understand how the use of VR will impact on the Tourism Industry in the …

Transmittance And Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Leaves From Plants With Different Nitrogen And Water Supply, James S. Schepers, T. M. Blackmer, Wallace Wilhelm, M. Resende Nov 1996

Transmittance And Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Leaves From Plants With Different Nitrogen And Water Supply, James S. Schepers, T. M. Blackmer, Wallace Wilhelm, M. Resende

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Nitrogen is essential for crop production, but also contributes to eutrophication of surface water and degradation of drinking water quality. Modern corn production requires relatively large quantities of N, which are generally supplied by fertilizers. Over-application of N fertilizers and animal wastes frequently results in nitrate leaching. Synchronizing N availability with crop N need offers the potential to protect the environment without sacrificing production. Tools are needed to rapidly and easily monitor crop N status to make timely decisions regarding fertilizer application. Analytical and optical techniques were evaluated with greenhouse grown corn at silking to evaluate several methods to monitor …

Characterization Of Sr‐Doped Lamno3 And Lacoo3 As Cathode Materials For A Doped Lagao3 Ceramic Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Man Feng, John B. Goodenough, Michael Schmerling

Faculty Publications

Energy dispersive spectrometry line scan and ac impedance spectroscopy were used in this study to investigate the chemical reactions between two cathode materials, La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 (LSM), La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ (LSC), and the electrolyte La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.85 (LSGM). Significant interdiffusions of Co into LSGM and Ga into LSC were found at an LSC/LSGM interface even at relatively low fabrication temperatures. In contrast, only small interdiffusions of Mn into LSGM and Ga into LSM were detected at the LSM/LSGM interface even though it was fired at 1470°C. The …
