Physical Linkage Of The Vibrio Cholerae Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin Secretory And Structural Subunit Gene Loci: Identification Of The Mshg Coding Sequence., Jane W. Marsh, Daxi Sun, Ronald K. Taylor

Vibrio cholerae O1 expresses a variety of cell surface factors which mediate bacterial adherence and colonization at the intestinal epithelium. The mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA), a type IV pilus, is a potential attachment factor of the V. cholerae El Tor biotype. We describe a TnphoA mutant that is defective in its ability to hemagglutinate mouse erythrocytes. The TnphoA insertion maps to a recently identified genetic locus that encodes products that are predicted to be essential for assembly and export of the MSHA pilus. Insertional disruption at this locus in a mshA-phoA reporter strain provides evidence for a role of this locus …

L'usage des pesticides augmente continuellement au Québec et au Canada depuis ces dernières années. C'est le secteur de l'agriculture qui est le principal utilisateur de pesticides. La tendance à la spécialisation des fermiers, par la mise en place de monocultures, crée un milieu propice à la prolifération d'insectes nuisibles et des mauvaises herbes. En outre, certains insectes ont développé une résistance aux pesticides et des doses plus élevées sont requises pour assurer leur efficacité. Les principaux avantages reliés à l'usage des pesticides sont d'augmenter le rendement des cultures, d'améliorer la qualité et l'apparence des produits et de réduire les besoins …

Malgré leurs nombreux avantages, les pesticides constituent néanmoins un danger pour la santé humaine et pour l'environnement. Ils doivent être manipulés avec prudence en suivant strictement les instructions fournies par le manufacturier à chacune des étapes d'un traitement. Il est important de connaître les dangers d'exposition, de respecter les pratiques sécuritaires et d'utiliser les équipements de protection individuelle appropriés à chacune des étapes impliquant la manipulation de pesticides.

La négligence ou le manque de formation peuvent avoir des conséquences graves pour la santé d'un utilisateur. Le Centre canadien de toxicologie a répertorié 3 404 cas d'empoisonnement aux pesticides au Canada en 1983, avec 1 458 nécessitant des soins médicaux (Carter, 1986). Au Québec, le Centre Anti-poison a répertorié 2 956 cas d'empoisonnement en 1994. Cent trente-huit cas ont eu lieu en milieu de travail, surtout lors de l'extermination, l'entretien paysager, la production en serre et dans les pépinières (Sanfaçon, 1995b). Monte Carlo Experiments And The Defense Of Diffusion Models In Molecular Population Genetics, Michael Dietrich

In the 1960s molecular population geneticists used Monte Carlo experiments to evaluate particular diffusion equation models. In this paper I examine the nature of this comparative evaluation and argue for three claims: first, Monte Carlo experiments are genuine experiments: second, Monte Carlo experiments can provide an important means for evaluating the adequacy of highly idealized theoretical models; and, third, the evaluation of the computational adequacy of a diffusion model with Monte Carlo experiments is significantly different from the evaluation of the empirical adequacy of the same diffusion model.

Two well-established common law doctrines increasingly are coming into conflict. The first protects individuals from unreasonable intrusions on their privacy. The second authorizes an employer to fire its employees at will, unless a clear agreement exists to the contrary. As employees have begun to assert their common law right of privacy' in the workplace, their claims have collided headlong with the doctrine of employment at will.

Shopping For A Venue: The Need For More Limits On Choice, Kimberly Jade Norwood

In an earlier article, Professor Norwood questioned the wisdom of the Supreme Court's decision in Ferens v. John Deere Co., which allows plaintiffs to double forum-shop, i.e., to file a lawsuit in one jurisdiction and then, while retaining the advantages of that jurisdiction's laws, to transfer the lawsuit to the geographically preferred jurisdiction. There, Professor Norwood assumed that having choices about where to file lawsuits was a necessary component of America's judicial system. Below, however, Professor Norwood explores that assumption and concludes that parties should not have the unrestricted choices seemingly provided by most venue laws.

On The Effectiveness Of Dry Film Lubricant Coatings In Reducing Automotive Valve Train Wear, Evan Benstead, Martin L. Smith, Joseph Foyos, Omar S. Es-Said

The effect of three dry lubricants on automotive valve train wear resistance was studied experimentally. Scuffing wear occurs as the cam slides across the lifter face where the rotating motion of the camshaft is converted into the linear motion necessary to drive the cylinder head valves. This scuffing is caused by localized microscopic bonding between the skidding surfaces. It can be minimized by using dry film lubricant coatings to increase the boundary lubrication depth adjacent to the contact area. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of direct training and observational learning on the acquisition, generalization, and maintenance of the first-aid skill “seeking adult assistance when injured” for three pairs of preschool children with disabilities (three target learners and three observational learners). A multiple probe design across pairs of participants was used. All 6 participants acquired the first-aid skill; more importantly, their responding generalized to playground and home situations and maintained at high levels during the follow-up probes conducted up to 8 weeks after training. The skill acquisition shown by the observational learners occurred without direct …

This research addresses the interactional work by which lawyers interrogate witnesses at trial. In particular, the study examines some videotaped segments of interrogation interchange in the first Menendez brothers' murder trial and analyzes lawyer's work in attempting the impeachment of an adverse witness. The paper finds a lived orderliness of the courtroom that resides in the locally organized material detail of real-time interrogation interchange and practices.
