Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics: Competition And Convection Effects In Reaction-Diffusion Fronts And Controlling Chaos., Jonathan Masere

Competition and convection effects in reaction-diffusion fronts and controlling chaos are studied. In Chapter 3 we report theoretical studies of competition in which two self-replicating organic molecules compete for a common reactant. We found that the self-replicating organic molecule can give sustained reaction-diffusion fronts. This phenomenon is investigated by numerical solutions of partial differential equations that couple local nonlinear kinetics and diffusion. Reaction-diffusion fronts involving competing species are then initiated and the concentration profiles of the autocatalysts monitored. Burnout represents a danger to the mental and physical health of human-service workers. Burnout often diminishes the quality and efficiency of service provided by workers and thus represents a danger to service recipients and a cost to employers. Repeated studies suggest that workers who report higher levels of job stress and lower levels of social support are more likely to report higher levels of burnout. Nursing home staff are subject to considerable occupational stress and report high levels of burnout. Several military attack scenarios involve the detonation of explosive in the soil backfill surrounding a target structure. In this study, experiments and numerical simulations were performed to determine if the enhanced mechanical properties of geogrid-reinforced soil backfills could mitigate blast effects from buried explosions. The dynamic response of an explosively-loaded, geogrid-reinforced sand was successfully characterized, identifying and quantifying certain blast mitigating effects. Six high explosive experiments were conducted, each involving a 0.91 kg nitromethane explosive charge placed at 76.2 cm depth within a test pit of compacted fill. The concept of using prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) for remediation of contaminated sites with fine-grained soils is examined. The PVD system is used to shorten the drainage path of the groundwater flow and promote subsurface liquid movement expediting the soil flushing process. The use of PVDs in the current state of practice has been limited to soil improvement. The use of PVDs under vacuum conditions is investigated using study soils consisting of 100% sand and 80% sand/20% kaolinite mixture. Tribes in the first half of this era, were initially victimized by the enactment of devastating "segregation" measures (i.e. the Indian Removal policy and later the Reservation policy). RESUMEN. Dentro de la familia Hylidae disponemos de información sobre las secuencias de osificación craneal para menos del 4.0% de sus miembros. El presente trabajo describe la secuencia de osificación craneal de Phyllomedusa boliviana. El patrón general de osificación es similar a lo reportado para otras especies de la familia, pero existen algunas diferencias importantes tales como la osificación tardía de los próoticos y la osificación premetamórfica de neopalatino, vómer, cuadrado-yugal, pterigoides y columela. El lento desarrollo ulterior de la osificación resulta en juveniles con cráneos extensamente cartilaginosos.

Hyla multifasciata is a medium to large species in the albopunctata species group, adults ranging in size from 42 - 61 mm SVL (mean male SVL = 48 mm, mean female SVL = 53 mm). The head is longer than wide. The snout is rounded in dorsal view, whereas in lateral view it is rounded and protrudes slightly beyond the mandible. The canthus rostralis is rounded and distinct, the loreal region is concave, and the internarial region is convex. The eyes are large, approximately twice the diameter of the tympanum. Bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish are widely distributed and popular sports species. We assessed growth of sympatric populations of these species in 14 reservoirs throughout Illinois, and attempted to relate growth to environmental factors. Principal components analysis (PCA) classified the lakes using 20 morphometric and limnological variables. We examined growth rate relationships with the principal components, via correlations, and also developed simple and multiple regression models using individual variables. Using size-specific growth for two size classes, percent littoral zone of a lake was correlated with growth of both channel catfish (300 and 450 mm) and small bluegill (50 mm). …

This study compared caloric expenditure between three step aerobic dance routines (STEP) using the same arm movements; one without any upper body resistive exercise product (ARM), one with a 2 lb. Power Air Ball (BALL), and one with a Spri Tube (TUBE). Twenty-seven college aged females familiar with step aerobics volunteered to be subjects. Maximal oxygen uptake was measured using the Bruce protocol. A 55 minute video was followed for each of the STEP routines to control for arm and leg movement. This study was conducted to investigate challenges associated with programming wellness activities in the university setting. Telephone interviews were conducted with 50 college/university wellness program coordinators in the Midwest United States. Campus Recreation/Recreational Sports employed 72% of the respondents, the remainder were employed by Athletics, Health Services, Physical Education, or a combination of those listed. Likert scales were used to gauge degree of barrier severity and amount of collaboration with various university departments. Ninety-eight percent of coordinators work with professionals outside of the department in which they were employed. Over the span of Bernard Malamud's career, a more than subtle difference is evident between the seductress of his first novel and his subsequent novels. Since Malamud has been accused by some critics as depicting one-dimensional women, I analyzed the metamorphosis of the author's seductress characters to determine whether the change lends a better understanding to the relationship between Malamud and his female characters. I used Jung's theory of the mother archetype and his understanding of the Lilith legends to analyze the role of each seductress.

Although Percy Bysshe Shelley has been recognized for his use of the Wandering Jew, critics have failed to produce a definitive work examining how this biblical legend figures into an understanding of the poet's changing world views. Since a comprehensive analysis was lacking, I studied Shelley's treatment of the Wandering Jew in each work that included the character to determine whether or not a relationship existed between Shelley's management of the figure and the poet's world beliefs. Bifunctional silica surfaces consisting of various combinations of the following organofunctional silanes were synthesized and characterized using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy: hexamethyldisilazane, octyldimethylmethoxysilane, phenyldimethylethoxysilane, (3-aminopropyl) -dimethylmethoxysilane, ( 2 - cyanoethyl)triethoxysilane, and trimethylmethoxysilane.

The relative amounts of organosilanes loaded on a silica surface were obtained from band area ratios of IR bands. Ratios of organosilanes bonded to the same silica surface were calculated from normalized band areas of the isolated silanol peak. Kinetic studies and chemical modification studies were performed on malate dehydrogenase from Escherichia coli (eMDH). Chemical modification studies using diethylpyrocarbonate and iodoacetic acid, along with log V/K profiles indicate that one ionizing group with a pK_a between 7.9 and 8.5 acts as a general acid/base in the catalytic mechanism. Log V profiles suggest that malate binds to the correctly protonated form of the enzyme. These results imply that a histidine residue is required for catalysis.

A primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect of 1.43 (±0.14) was observed on V/K using malate-2-d, while no isotope effect was measured on V_{max …}

Qualitative reasons and positive influence of individuals by roles were measured with weighted responses. The results indicated that course content, special abilities in the field, employment opportunities, the opportunity to work with people, and the opportunity to contribute to society were ranked as most important. The roles of mother/step-mother, father/step-father, high school teacher, and college teacher were ranked as most influential. Attitudes of 79 educators toward inclusion were investigated in relation to specific job titles, years experience, and knowledge level. Knowledge level was determined by performance on an inclusion quiz. Questionnaires were completed by subjects to determine attitude. The results indicated that performance on the quiz was related to responses on some questions. Those with more knowledge appeared to be in favor of inclusion. This is consistent with past studies. Attitudes were similar across educational disciplines. Years of experience may have some impact on attitude if coupled with other variables.
