"I Am Contemporary!": The Life and Times of Penny Arcade explores the career of performance artist Susana Ventura, a.k.a. Penny Arcade, and establishes her position in the American post-war avant-garde and counter-culture performance scene. The document is chronological, examining first Ventura's fifties childhood, moving toward her rebellious sixties, through her introspective seventies, and eventually into a performance career in the New York avant-garde scene of the eighties and nineties. Each main chapter explores three elements of these time periods, first establishing the social background, then moving to an overview of counter-cultural performance, and finally examining Ventura's work within that time …

This dissertation explores a new method of adaptive compensation and harmonic suppression in distribution systems. The compensator under development and investigation integrates a harmonic blocking compensator (HBC) with an adaptive balancing compensator (ABC) resulting in an adaptive harmonic blocking compensator (AHBC). Such a compensator can be used for compensating reactive power, for symmetrizing supply currents, for protecting the distribution system against load generated current harmonics and, consequently, the voltage harmonic distortion caused by non-linear loads. Harmonic blocking compensators are designed for compensating fixed loads, and they are not adaptive devices, while the adaptive capability of compensators is becoming more and …

Prior research shows that income tax return preparers influence the income tax compliance decisions of their clients. Information about the risk that income tax return preparers perceive in reporting aggressively on their clients' income tax returns may help the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reduce the tax gap that exists in the United States today. Two primer sets were manufactured from the cytadhesin P1 gene of M. Pneumoniae in an attempt to amplify homologous sequences in M. mycoides subsp. mycoides "SC" Type in a search for a P1-like gene in the latter organism. The first primer set MP-2 amplifies a 488 bp fragment in M. pneumoniae. The second primer set MP-3 amplifies a 303 bp fragment bracketing the 13-amino acid binding domain in the same organism. Both primer sets amplified the expected fragments in all the virulent strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides "SC" type. The primer sets did not however amplify the expected fragments …

The U3 region of long terminal repeat (LTR) of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) contains transcriptional regulatory elements. To identify the elements in prototype (P), fetal donkey dermal cell-adapted (A), and two variant (V) EIAV LTRs, DNase I footprinting, gel shift, and transient gene expression assays were performed. The assays used U937 monocytic cells which can be induced into macrophages by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). For study of AP1 sites, c-Jun/AP1 was also used. Footprinting with nuclear extracts from TPA-induced and uninduced U937 cells localized methylated DNA-binding protein (MDBP), PEA2, AP1, PU.1, and CCAAT enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) sites as common elements in …

Listeria monocytogenes has the potential to be a serious pathogen for the compromised health segment of our population (immunocompromised, young, elderly and the pregnant). While the infectious dose is generally believed to be high 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp6$, infectious dosages of 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp3$ have been reported. Listeria monocytogenes poses a threat because of several factors: ubiquity in nature, isolation from fresh/salt waters, soil, ruminates and 17% of the human population. Listeria monocytogenes can colonize surfaces within 20 minutes, evade sanitizing, and is capable of growth from 37$\sp\circ$C to below refrigeration temperature. A two-echelon inventory and distribution system consisting of a centralized warehouse and N stores is considered in this paper. The inventories of the warehouse as well as the stores are controlled by periodic review (s,S) ordering policies. The expected levels of capital investment, storage space needs, capacity requirements for delivery vehicles, and reliable customer service are issues of great importance to practitioners when considering the introduction of a central warehouse and transportation system. A technique is outlined for the allocation of irregular parts onto arbitrarily shaped resources. Placements are generated by matching complementary shapes between the unplaced parts and the remaining areas of the stock material. The part and resource profiles are characterized to varying levels of detail using geometric "features". Information contained in the features is used at each stage of processing to intelligently select and place parts on the resource. Techniques for the efficient handling of complex profiles and other practical implementation issues are described. Twelve adult low-ability readers participated in a pretest-posttest control group study investigating the efficacy of Communicative Reading Strategies (CRS) as an instructional reading approach. Six adults received CRS instruction and constituted the experimental group. The remaining six adults received skill-based instruction and served as the control group. All participants demonstrated instructional level reading skills at or below a fifth grade level and completed 40 hours of instruction. Changes in performance on measures of word recognition, comprehension, and reading rate from pretest to posttest were used to compare CRS and control groups. Obligate root-parasitic flowering plants of the genus Striga (family Scrophulariaceae) cause considerable yield reductions of various crops in tropical and semi-tropical countries. Mature Striga species (witchweeds) plants produce copious quantities of minute seeds which remain dormant in the soil for many years until exudates from roots of various host plants induce germination. Economically effective means of control of Striga species are not yet available for small-scale farmers in developing countries. Current day interest in acts of cooperation in organizations can be traced to classical writers such as Barnard (1938) and Roethlisberger and Dickson (1939), and more recently to Katz and Kahn(1966, 1978). Building on these foundations, considerable empirical research has examined what has been labeled organizational citizenship. Organizational citizenship behaviors are not specified in job descriptions or recognized by the organization's formal reward system. We report the first measurements of UV oscillator strengths (ƒ-values) in Fe II from a high-sensitivity absorption experiment developed at the University of Wisconsin. The accuracy of our measurements is demonstrated by our reproducing well-known ƒ-value ratios in Fe I and Fe II. The first laboratory ƒ-value measurement of the 160.845 nm transition in Fe II is presented and compared to values in the literature. While this paper focuses on Fe II, the high-sensitivity absorption method that we have developed is applicable to essentially every element in the periodic table, for both neutral and ionized species, over a broad range …

Branching Fractions And Oscillator Strengths For Fe Ii Transitions From The 3d6(5D)4p Subconfiguration, Scott D. Bergeson, K. L. Mullman, M. E. Wickliffe, J. E. Lawler

New experimental branching fractions and transition probabilities are reported for 56 transitions in Fe II. The branching fractions are measured with a Fourier transform spectrometer and also with a high-resolution grating spectrometer on a n optically thin hollow cathode discharge. Highly accurate experimental radiative lifetimes from the recent literature provide the normalization required to convert our branching fractions into absolute transition probabilities. Results are compared with experimental and theoretical values in the literature. Our new transition probabilities will establish the absolute scale for relative absorption oscillator strengths of vacuum ultraviolet lines measured using a new high-sensitivity absorption experiment at the …

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small.
