Study Of The Effect Of Pulsating Combustion On The Calcination Reaction., Robert Edwin James Jan 1996

Study Of The Effect Of Pulsating Combustion On The Calcination Reaction., Robert Edwin James

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Limestone calcination is an important process for the power generation industry. Calcination is the precursor to the sulfation process which is used for flue gas cleanup. This research studies the effects of a pulse combustion exhaust stream on the calcination of limestone. Results are presented for different types of limestone, injected at different exhaust stream conditions and locations in the exhaust stream. Certain conditions show promising results in the form of larger calcination percentages and larger surface areas. Results of pulsating cases were compared to results found using a steady combustor. A computer code modeling the pulse combustor was used …

Archaeology, The Ancient World, And The Bible: An Integrated Evangelistic Approach, Franke Jon Zollman Jan 1996

Archaeology, The Ancient World, And The Bible: An Integrated Evangelistic Approach, Franke Jon Zollman

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Recent studies of the Seventh-day Adventist church have revealed that there are several large segments of society in the United States that are not present in the church in large numbers. Among them are groups of people who have attained high socioeconomic levels and above average educational levels. Many of the people who live in the Chestnut Hill section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are in these groups. Traditional Adventist evangelistic methods have not attracted them. This project sought to develop an archaeologically based evangelistic approach that would attract people with similar characteristics.

Method. A series of twenty …

A Seminar On Adventists, Adornment, And Jewelry, Dennis H. Braun Jan 1996

A Seminar On Adventists, Adornment, And Jewelry, Dennis H. Braun

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist church continues to struggle with the issue of jewelry and adornment. Fewer members agree with the standard church teaching on the subject, and pastors and teachers are frustrated with having to continually deal with the subject, a majority of the youth in the Adventist church have rejected the traditional Adventist interpretation advocating the non-usage of jewelry.

Method. This study explores the biblical texts in question, historical Adventist trends, the writings of Ellen White, and other related issues. The research results were presented in a seminar format to interested members of the College Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church. …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Ministry Of The Hamilton Community Church To The Unchurched, Mark C. Bresee Jan 1996

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Ministry Of The Hamilton Community Church To The Unchurched, Mark C. Bresee

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. During my first eight years in the ministry I was troubled that members did not feel comfortable inviting unchurched seekers to our weekend worship services. I was concerned about the fact that most churches, including mine, were not reaching the unchurched.

Method. In 1990 I attended a Pastor’s Conference at the Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago, Illinois, where I learned how their philosophy and strategy for ministry had resulted in great success in reaching the unchurched. In September of 1991 we planted the Hamilton Community Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee using some of the philosophy and strategy of the …

Education For Worship In The East Wenatchee Seventh-Day Adventist Church, S. Joseph Kidder Jan 1996

Education For Worship In The East Wenatchee Seventh-Day Adventist Church, S. Joseph Kidder

Doctor of Ministry Projects

There is no greater challenge than to learn how to worship God, the Creator and Redeemer. God's people must make an effort to search for this truth as it is found in Christ (John 5:39). They must learn how to worship Him, who created and redeemed them through His only Son, for true worship experience will add power to their faith and vitality to Christian practice. One must not only endeavor to acquire more knowledge and to gain increased understanding about the truth of worship, but also to share in a greater worship experience. This project report begins by discussing …

The Use Of Small Groups As An Element Of Discipleship In The Fairhaven, Flint, Michigan, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Walton H. Rose Jan 1996

The Use Of Small Groups As An Element Of Discipleship In The Fairhaven, Flint, Michigan, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Walton H. Rose

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Various problems surround discipleship today. Many churches have members, but there is little commitment to teaching and training members in small groups, with the result that there is a lack of following Christ in word and deed. Furthermore, discipleship is not well defined, understood, or practiced in the church. The church's mission (Matt 28:19-20) is in trouble because too often churches win and baptize, but do not teach and train. The sad result is lack of reproduction and multiplication.

Method. The program development method was used in this project. Two sources of literature were considered: (1) literature dealing with …

The Belonging Principle In Church Membership, Warren Butler Ruf Jan 1996

The Belonging Principle In Church Membership, Warren Butler Ruf

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Meaningful church membership in the United States is diminished by current social trends including privatism, mobility, and theological pluralism. This loosening of the traditional "ties that bind," has created a belief-belonging gap in many Christian churches. While weekly attendance at services might increase, formal membership and institutional loyalty decreases.

Method and Results. This phenomena is examined from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective. Social research conducted in a Caucasian conference in the Southeast U.S. indicated that a sense of belonging is linked to the age of the member. While 90 percent of those above age sixty-five claimed a strong loyalty and …

Understanding The Folk Islam Of The Dagbani-Speaking People: A Prerequisite To Evangelism In North Ghana, Sampson Kenneth Twumasi Jan 1996

Understanding The Folk Islam Of The Dagbani-Speaking People: A Prerequisite To Evangelism In North Ghana, Sampson Kenneth Twumasi

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. At the beginning of this century Islam was confined to some geographical areas in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Dr. Samuel Zwemer in his writings claimed that Islam was a dying religion because it had within it “the germs of death." This claim is no longer valid as Islam has experienced a resurgence and grown proportionately well in other parts of the world. Islam, along with animism, has gained roots in Africa, especially in North and West Africa. Both religions have grown tremendously among some of the people groups in North Ghana where Islam is mixed with hundreds of superstitions …

New Age Holistic Health: Implications For Seventh-Day Adventist Faith And Practice, Manuel Vasquez Jan 1996

New Age Holistic Health: Implications For Seventh-Day Adventist Faith And Practice, Manuel Vasquez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Alternative New Age holistic health therapies can be physically and spiritually dangerous for Seventh-day Adventist Christians because these therapies are based on nonbiblical worldview philosophies, universal energy forces, astrology, the occult, and Eastern mysticism.

Method. Primary and secondary New Age holistic health sources, as well as the Bible, the writings of Ellen G. White and other Christian writers were researched. Interviews were conducted with Chinese acupuncturists and New Age holistic health practitioners. The intent was to discover the roots of New Age holistic health therapies and practices and the sources that the recent New Age holistic pioneers drew from …

A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai Jan 1996

A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this study, the Transit Automata (TA) model, a Cellular Automata (CA) based spatial model, has been developed. It includes a set of cells, states, rules, events, and a system clock. In contrast to CA, a TA model fragments the problem space along restricted routes. All cells on the routes are treated as equal and controlled by rules. Like CA models, an initial configuration of a TA model can be embedded and can be dynamically changed during the runtime. Furthermore, user-controlled events and stochastic events are used to trigger the discrete events of the model. A TA model is a …

Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka Jan 1996

Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using a general, second-order, nonlocal formalism (Ganguli et al., 1985, 1988, 1994), we find that multiple Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) nonlocal eigenmodes with comparable growth rates are possible for a given set of parameters. This is in contrast to local modes and to most of the nonlocal modes, where the "the ground state" is usually most unstable. This finding suggests a possible explanation of the broadband and spiky spectrum of IEDD waves seen in laboratory experiments (Koepke et al., 1994, 1995; Amatucci et al., 1994; Carroll et al., 1996) and in Particle-In-Cell simulations (Nishikawa et al., 1988, 1990). We develop …

Development And Assessment Of A Standard Dissolution Methodology For Protein-Based Injectable Suspensions., Sunil Prabhu Jan 1996

Development And Assessment Of A Standard Dissolution Methodology For Protein-Based Injectable Suspensions., Sunil Prabhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To date, no standard dissolution methodology is recognized in the official compendia for protein-based injectable suspensions. Development of a sensitive dissolution method would have utility as an in vitro quality control tool and an indicator of associated in vivo product performance. Using the spin-filter as the dissolution device of choice, the objective of these studies was to develop a standard dissolution methodology for protein-based suspensions. Secondarily, the objective was to elucidate the steps which critically influence ion-complexed protein dissolution, and assess the magnitude of their effect. In Phase I of dissolution methodology development, studies of the device hydrodynamics concluded that …

The Effects Of A Differential Reinforcement And Stimulus History For Following Rules On Insensitivity To New Contingencies., Keith Edward Ruckstuhl Jan 1996

The Effects Of A Differential Reinforcement And Stimulus History For Following Rules On Insensitivity To New Contingencies., Keith Edward Ruckstuhl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This series of experiments investigated whether a history of reinforcement for following or not following rules under different stimulus conditions leads to differential sensitivity to changes in contingencies under those stimulus conditions. Subjects were provided with instructions in the presence of a yellow stimulus that positively corresponded with both fixed ratio (FR) and differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) schedules of reinforcement. Subjects were also provided with instructions in the presence of a blue stimulus that either negatively corresponded with the FR and DRL schedules, or did not correspond at all with these schedules. Subjects whose behavior followed the instructions …

Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler Jan 1996

Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During periods of egg laying in the chicken, when circulating levels of estrogen are increased, the liver-specific estrogen-dependent very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDL II) gene is expressed. Transcription is accompanied by estrogen-dependent, liver-specific changes in the chromatin conformation within and surrounding the gene. One of the regions that changes in conformation is in the promoter where the estrogen receptor along with multiple liver-specific and ubiquitous transcription factors interact in a cooperative manner to assemble a functional transcriptional initiation complex. However, the apoVLDL II gene is expressed at higher levels when the first intron is added to the promoter. Since …

Expressive Endeavors Utilizing Advanced And Emerging Technical Means., Paul Louis Siciliano

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Throughout most of known human existence the processes, materials and tools of production were available to individuals involved in both utilitarian and expressive work. Since the Renaissance, however, the exponential growth and sophistication of technology has made it impossible for the majority of artists to gain access to many potential tools for expression. Despite the complexity of myriad technical means, some individuals have been successful in utilizing advanced technologies for expressive purposes. The purpose of this study was to examine the methods these individuals employed to access and apply sophisticated technologies for expressive production. A qualitative research methodology consisting of …

An Analysis Of The International, Domestic And Personal Determinants Of The Presidential Use Of Force., Barry Norris Sweet Jan 1996

An Analysis Of The International, Domestic And Personal Determinants Of The Presidential Use Of Force., Barry Norris Sweet

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines the determinants of the presidential use of military force. More specifically, this dissertation is an effort to determine how international and domestic political factors interact with presidential personality types when the use of military force is a foreign policy option. An attempt is made to bridge the gap between theories of international relations and foreign policy decision-making by using all three levels of analysis. Previous research has failed to take into account the effect of individual presidential characteristics on the decision to use force. Furthermore, the previous research involving the use of force has either examined the …

A Plan For Strengthening Expository Preaching By Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chongho Yang Jan 1996

A Plan For Strengthening Expository Preaching By Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chongho Yang

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Adventist churches in Korea urgently need expository preaching to act as a counterbalance to the strong traditional emphasis on topical preaching. The greatest problem of preaching in Adventist churches of Korea seems to be a lack of biblical content. Complicating this is a widespread failure to correctly apply hermeneutical principles to biblical exposition.

Method

Two taped sermons preached by each of seven selected Seventh-day Adventist preachers in Korea were collected and analyzed in the light of the criteria established for authenthic expository preaching. The criteria were obtained from the review of biblical and current literature.

Results

It was found …

Strategy To Develop Small-Scale Income-Generating Programs Among Seventh-Day Adventist Lay Members In Ghana, David Sarfo Ameyaw Jan 1996

Strategy To Develop Small-Scale Income-Generating Programs Among Seventh-Day Adventist Lay Members In Ghana, David Sarfo Ameyaw

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The call for self-reliance and self-support in the operation and mission of the SDA Church worldwide presents a great challenge to the churches in developing countries. Many of the members in developing countries such as Ghana are unemployed and fall within the low-income bracket. In order for such membership to contribute to support the church, there must be a program to improve members' standard of living and their contributions and commitment to the church. Making the church in Ghana self-reliant and self- supporting is not a matter of how to motivate members to sacrifice and give, but how to empower …

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Problem

The task of this study was to rethink the role of pastors as shepherd-equippers of lay leaders in view of the explosive growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea.

Method

The dissertation has two parts. Part One covers: (1) institutional factors which provided the background for this study, (2) biblical and theological dimensions as the basis for the new pastoral paradigm in PNG, and (3) cultural and sociological factors as means to understand the local cultures in order to contextualize ministry to make it more relevant to the people. Part Two synthesizes the …

Marketing Strategies For Seventh-Day Adventist Literature In Brazil, Mario Paulo Martinelli Jan 1996

Marketing Strategies For Seventh-Day Adventist Literature In Brazil, Mario Paulo Martinelli

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

There is a great need for the publishing work in Brazil to use different methods. Although several changes have occurred with the advance of technology and urbanization, the methods employed to distribute SDA literature have remained practically the same as those used in earlier times. Literature evangelists are facing greater difficulties in personally talking with people. The traditional door-to-door sales method is reaching fewer and fewer people and new approaches are required to support colporteurs in their work. In addition, sales of literature to church members in Brazil are low and give evidence to the fact that strategies are …

Improving The Assimilation Of New Members In Small Adventist Churches In Central Pennsylvania, Robert C. Williams

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The failure of many of our small Seventh-day Adventist congregations to fully welcome new members into their midst has been of pastoral concern for many years. This project is an attempt to build awareness among established church members of the need to assimilate and sacrifice for new members.

Method

The first part of the project involved research into the assimilation of new members in ten small Adventist congregations in central Pennsylvania. New members who had joined the church during a six-year interval were studied to see if they had maintained active membership status during that time. Interviews were also …

New Approaches For Seventh-Day Adventist Evangelism In Swaziland, Stephen Jacobs Masuku Jan 1996

New Approaches For Seventh-Day Adventist Evangelism In Swaziland, Stephen Jacobs Masuku

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist church in Swaziland experienced slow growth from the time of its inception. Starting from 1920, when the first Adventist missionary arrived in Swaziland, to 1994 membership was 2075. This means that the Adventist church in Swaziland was the slowest growing church in the former Southern Union and among the Christian churches in Swaziland.

Method

This dissertation analyzes: Swazi traditional history, Swazi traditional religious beliefs, the introduction of Christianity in Swaziland, how the SDA church was planted in Swaziland, and the evangelistic methods utilized by the Adventist church and other Christian churches. This approach helped in the …

A Christian Response To Zambian Death Rituals, Cornelius Mulenga Matandiko Jan 1996

A Christian Response To Zambian Death Rituals, Cornelius Mulenga Matandiko

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Adventist Christians in Zambia wrestle with the tension between elements of their traditional religion and Western Christianity. Many of them, fearing spirits of the dead, participate in traditional funeral practices aimed at protecting them from spirit attacks. This presents a problem because many of these practices are contrary to what the Bible proclaims.

Method

In this study, a traditional understanding of death and death rituals is developed. This is followed by a biblical understanding of death and death rituals. An analysis and evaluation of cultural views in the light of the Bible teachings on death, death rituals, and spirits …
